वे आएंगे और आपकी दीवारों को रंग देंगे!

क्या आपने कभी सुना है कि कोई व्यक्ति या जोड़ा घूम-घूमकर लोगों के घरों में दीवारों पर चित्र बनाता है और बदले में कुछ नहीं मांगता! पेंटिंग बनाने की यह सनक आखिर कैसी कहानी है और इसकी वजह क्या है?

पत्रकार जे. सुशील और कलाकार मीनाक्षी झा की कहानी कुछ ऐसी ही है। दोनों ने देश भर में दर्जनों शहरों के दर्जनों घरों में घूम-घूम कर वाल पेंटिग की है और अपनी संतुष्टि का नया जरिया ढूंढा है। जे सुशील (जिनका असली नाम सुशील झा है और एक दिन वे फेसबुक पर ‘झाओं’ के फ्रेंड रिक्वेस्ट से तंग आकर मजे-मजे में ‘झा’ से ‘जे’ हो गए-जैसे उदय प्रकाश की कहानी ‘पॉलगोमेरा का स्कूटर’ में रामगोपाल ने अपने नाम को उलटा कर कर लिया था!)। बीबीसी हिंदी सेवा में नौकरी करते हैं और उनकी पत्नी मीनाक्षी ने जेएनयू से आर्ट हिस्ट्री में एमए किया है और दिल्ली के ही अम्बेडकर विश्वविद्यालय से एमफिल भी। जे सुशील ने अपनी पढ़ाई–लिखाई जेएनयू और आईआईएमसी से की है। 

“आप क्यों ऐसा करते हैं?  इससे क्या मिलता है? कोई पैसा-वैसा भी देता है या ऐसे ही?”

“मीनाक्षी को पेंटिंग का शौक है और घूमने का भी। अप्रैल 2013 में ऐसा हुआ कि हम लोग जेएनयू से आ रहे थे बाइक से तो अचानक से उसने कहा कि जीवन ऐसा ही होना चाहिए कि खूब घूम सकें और घूम-घूम कर पेंटिंग बना सकें। अमेरिका में गूगनहाइम के तहत फेलोशिप होता है, जिसमें कुछ वैसा ही होता है लेकिन भारत में ऐसा कुछ नहीं है। उसके बाद हमने लोगों को घर बुलाना शुरू किया ताकि वे हमारी पेटिंग्स को देख सकें।

“फिर शुरुआत कैसे हुई?”

“दरअसल उसी दौरान पंकज दुबे की किताब ‘लूजर कहीं का’ आई थी। वो हमारे मित्र हैं, तो हमने उनसे बात की। शुरू में वे हिचकिचाए लेकिन अपनी दीवार दे दी। उसके बाद मैं गोआ गया वहां मेरा स्कूल दोस्त रहता था, उससी से भी दीवार मांगी। उसके बाद हमने आर्टोलॉग (http://artologue.in) नाम से एक ब्लॉग बना लिया। फिर तो धमाल हो गया। हम शुरू में बाइक से नहीं गए, क्योंकि वो पायलट था।”

जे सुशील और मीनाक्षी ने उसके बाद 6 शहरों में 8 घरों में पेंटिग की। उन्होंने एक महीने की योजना बनाई कि इसमें बंबई से गोआ जाकर वे पेंटिग करेंगे लेकिन फिर योजना में तब्दीली करते हुए उसे पुणे से चेन्नई कर दिया। उन्होंने पूना, गोआ, बेंगलुरु, मंगलोर, होसूर और चेन्नई शहरों में आठ घरों में पेंटिग की। यह सन 2014 के फरवरी की बात है। कुल मिलाकर वे बुलेट (बाइक) से करीब 2500 किलोमीटर घूमे। हालांकि उससे पहले वे जेएनयू में गरीब बच्चों के साथ ऐसा कर चुके थे, लेकिन बाकयदा योजनाबद्ध तरीके से वैसा पहली बार कर रहे थे।

किसी ने पैसा भी दिया या सिर्फ अपना खर्च था?

“नहीं, हम लोगों से कुछ मांगते तो नहीं थे, लेकिन लोग खाने-ठहरने का इंतजाम कर ही देते थे। पूना में किसी ने छह हजार दिए तो किसी ने दस हजार तक। पुणे में जिन लोगों के घर में हमने पेंटिंग की वे ऐसे परिवार थे जिनसे मैं पहली बार मिल रहा था। जैसे पूना में केपी मोहनन और तारा मोहनन के घर में हमने पेंटिंग की थी जो लिंग्विस्ट हैं और नोम चोम्स्की के छात्र रहे हैं और एमआईटी से पीचएडी हैं। उन्होंने हमारे काम की काफी तारीफ की।” उसके बाद वे दिल्ली लौटे तो पंचकूला गए और फिर जुलाई 2014 में बाइक से कश्मीर। अमृतसर, उधमपुर, जम्मू होते हुए श्रीनगर करीब 2000 किलोमीटर। 

आप जब पेंटिंग बनाते हैं तो कोई थीम या विचार भी होता है या अपने मन से ब्रश चला देते हैं?

“दरअसल हमारे पास कोई थीम नहीं होती। जब हम लोगों के पास जाते हैं तो अपना काम दिखाते हैं, जिसमें ज्यादातर मीनाक्षी के काम होते हैं। उनसे उनके परिवार के बारे में पूछते हैं तो लोग बातचीत में कुछ धुंधला सा आइडिया दे देते हैं। जैसे मान लीजिए कि नेचर की तस्वीर बनी है, तो कोई कहता है कि मधुबनी का ये डिजायन बना दो। फिर उनसे बात करके हम उन्हें बेसिक आइडिया पर लाते हैं।”

जे सुशील और मीनाक्षी की पेंटिंग्स के प्रशंसक पत्रकार रवीश कुमार भी हैं। फेसबुक पर उनकी बनाई एक बंदर की पेंटिंग देखकर रवीश ने टिपप्णी की कि उनकी छोटी सी बेटी वो तस्वीर देखकर दिन भर बंदर के बारे में कहानी पूछती रही!

एक वाल पेंटिग बनाने में अमूमन एक दिन का वक्त तो लग ही जाता है और अगर काम बारीक है तो तीन-चार दिन तक लग जाता है। लेकिन सवाल है कि ये काम किस तरह से यूनिक है? किस तरह से अलग है? क्या पेंटिग ऐसी चीज है जो घूम-घूम कर बनाई जा सके?

इस पर मीनाक्षी का कहना है, “मुझे जहां तक लगता है कि ये काम दो तरह से यूनिक है, हालांकि मुराल पेंटिंग तो हो ही रहा है...पब्लिक आर्ट होता है जिसमें जनता की कोई भागीदारी नहीं होती, लेकिन हमारे आइडिया में परिवार या कम्यूनिटी की भागीदारी होती है। जैसे हमारे ऑफिस में एक लड़की काम करती है। आर्ट ऑन द वाल...जो ऑर्डर पर बना देते हैं। लेकिन हमारा काम ऐसा नहीं है, इसे रिलेशनल आर्ट कहा जा सकता है जिसका नामकरण एक इरानी दार्शनिक ने 90 के दशक में किया था। जिससे कोई दर्शक आध्यात्मिक तौर पर रिलेट कर सके। इसमें भागीदारी करने वाला व्यक्ति अपना मान लेता है। मान लो किसी ने बुद्ध का कान बनाया, तो उसे लगता है कि उस पेंटिंग में उसकी भी भागीदारी है। उसने भी बनाया है।”

गौतम बुद्ध विश्वविद्यालय (नोएडा) में पढ़ा रही विभावरी और अजीम हसन प्रेमजी फाउंडेशन से जुड़े उनके पति प्रियंवद लिखते हैं- “दोनों के बीच ये समझ कहीं न कहीं उन संघर्षों की बदौलत भी आई है, जो इन्हें एक-दूसरे को पाने के लिए समाज और पितृसत्ता के साथ करनी पड़ी। वे तकलीफें कहीं न कहीं इनके भीतर बाकी है अभी…वो गुस्सा…वो खलिश अभी भी सालती है इन्हें! लेकिन ये गुस्सा ये खलिश और ये तकलीफें इन्हें तोड़ नहीं पाई हैं बल्कि कहीं न कहीं इनकी मजबूती का सबब ही बनी हैं! दोनों ने अपनी सृजनात्मक ऊर्जा को पेंटिंग में बखूबी इस्तेमाल किया है।”

सुशील कहते हैं कि पूरी दुनिया के कलाकार स्टुडियो से जुड़ गए हैं, लोगों को लगता है कि ये बड़े लोगों की चीज है और कलाकार खब्ती और सनकी होता है। मीनीक्षी कहती है कि हम चाहते थे कि इसे आम लोगों के बीच में लाया जाए।

“क्या आप इसे एक स्वतंत्र करियर के तौर पर देखते हैं?”

“नहीं..हम इसे संभावना के तौर पर देखते ही नहीं हैं। ये हमारा पैशन है..उन छुट्‍टियों में हम ज्यादा से ज्यादा लोगों तक पहुंच सकें। जिस घड़ी आप पैसा चार्ज करेंगे वो इंटरएक्टिव नहीं रह पाएगा, अभी तक कला की दुनिया में इसे गंभीरता से नहीं लिया जा रहा है कम से कम भारत में। विदेश में होता है। लेकिन भारत में नहीं..यूरोप में पब्लिक आर्ट अलग आयाम पर चला गया है।”

इस तरह के कलाकारों के सामने कई समस्या भी हैं। मीनाक्षी के पास आर्ट की डिग्री नहीं है, तो बहुत सारी दिक्कते हैं। प्रदर्शनी नहीं हो पाती। कला की दुनिया में घुसने की अपनी जद्दोजहद है। हालांकि मीनाक्षी की चार प्रदर्शनी दिल्ली और पटना में हो चुकी हैं, लेकिन नए लोगों को काफी मुश्किलें झेलनी पड़ती हैं। 

मीनाक्षी ने अपनी शुरुआत मधुबनी पेंटिंग से की थी, हालांकि अब वे नहीं करतीं। इसका कहीं से प्रशिक्षण नहीं लिया है। मीनाक्षी की एंगिल में दर्शन और मिथक होते हैं वहीं जे सुशील की एंगिल में छोटे बच्चे, जानवर और प्रकृति हैं।

लेकिन क्या एक पत्रकार के लिए घूम-घूमकर पेंटिग बनाना इतना सहज है? क्या उन्हें छुट्टी मिल पाती है?

“दरअसल मैं अपनी छुट्टियों का ऐसे ही इस्तेमाल करता हूं और बहुत सारी छुट्टियों को इक्कट्ठा कर इस तरह का काम करता हूं। आमतौर पर मैं छुट्टियों में दूसरा कोई काम नहीं करता।” सुशील और मीनाक्षी से संपर्क का पता उनके ब्लॉग के अबाउट सेक्शन में है।
