अर्जुन के 3 पुत्र थे। द्रौपदी से जन्मे अर्जुन के पुत्र का नाम श्रुतकर्मा था। द्रौपदी के अलावा अर्जुन की सुभद्रा, उलूपी और चित्रांगदा नामक 3 और पत्नियां थीं। सुभद्रा से अभिमन्यु, उलूपी से इरावन, चित्रांगदा से बभ्रुवाहन नामक पुत्रों का जन्म हुआ। कहते हैं कि अपने ही पुत्र द्वारा अर्जुन में मारे गए। यह कैसे हुआ? इसके पीछे भी एक कथा है।
एक दिन महर्षि वेदव्यास और श्रीकृष्ण के कहने पर पांडवों ने अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का विचार किया। पांडवों ने शुभ मुहूर्त देखकर यज्ञ का शुभारंभ किया और अर्जुन को रक्षक बनाकर घोड़ा छोड़ दिया। वह घोड़ा घूमते-घूमते मणिपुर जा पहुंचा। मणिपुर नरेश बभ्रुवाहन ने जब सुना कि मेरे पिता आए हैं, तब वह गणमान्य नागरिकों के साथ बहुत-सा धन साथ में लेकर बड़ी विनय के साथ उनके दर्शन के लिए नगर सीमा पर पहुंचा। मणिपुर नरेश को इस प्रकार आया देख अर्जुन कुपित होकर बोले, बेटा! तेरा यह ढंग ठीक नहीं है। जान पड़ता है, तू क्षत्रिय धर्म से बहिष्कृत हो गया है पुत्र। मैं महाराज युधिष्ठिर के यज्ञ संबंधी अश्व की रक्षा करता हुआ तेरे राज्य के भीतर आया हूं। फिर भी तू मुझसे युद्ध क्यों नहीं करता? क्षत्रियों का धर्म है युद्ध करना।
उस समय अर्जुन की पत्नी नागकन्या उलूपी भी उस वार्तालाप को सुन रही थीं। उन्होंने बभ्रुवाहन से कहा, तुम्हारे पिता कुरुकुल के श्रेष्ठ वीर और युद्ध के मद से उन्मत्त रहने वाले हैं। अत: इनके साथ अवश्य युद्ध करो। ऐसा करने से ये तुम पर प्रसन्न होंगे। यह सुनकर बभ्रुवाहन ने अपने पिता अर्जुन से युद्ध किया। तब अर्जुन और बभ्रुवाहन के बीच घोर युद्ध हुआ। कहते हैं कि इस युद्ध में युद्ध में बभ्रुवाहन मूर्छित हो गए थे और अर्जुन मारे गए थे।

अर्जुन के मारे जाने का समाचार सुनकर युद्ध भूमि में अर्जुन की पत्नी चित्रांगदा पहुंचकर विलाप करने लगी। वह उलूपी से कहने लगी कि तुम्हारी ही आज्ञा से मेरे पुत्र बभ्रुवाहन ने अपने पिता से युद्ध किया। चित्रांगदा ने रोते हुए उलूपी से कहा कि तुम धर्म की जानकार हो बहन। मैं तुमसे अर्जुन के प्राणों की भीख मांगती हूं। चित्रांगदा ने उलूपी को कठोर और विनम्र दोनों ही तरह के वचन कहे। अंत में उसने कहा कि तुम्हीं ने बेरे बेटों को लड़ाकर उनकी जान ली है। मेरा बेटा भले ही मारा जाए लेकिन तुम अर्जुन को जीवित करो अन्यथा मैं भी अपने प्राण त्याग दूंगी।
तभी मूर्छित बभ्रुवाहन को होश आ गया और उसने देखा कि उसकी मां अर्जुन के पास बैठकर विलाप कर रही है और विमाता उलूपी भी पास ही खड़ी है। बभ्रुवाहन अपने पिता अर्जुन के समक्ष बैठकर विलाप करने लगा और प्रण लिया कि अब मैं भी इस रणभूमि पर आमरण अनशन कर अपनी देह त्याग दूंगा। पुत्र और मां के विलाप को देख-सुनकर उलूपी का हृदय भी पसीज गया और उसने संजीवन मणिका का स्मरण किया। नागों के जीवन की आधारभूत मणि उसके स्मरण करते ही वहां आ गई। तब उन्होंने उस मणि के स्पर्श से अर्जुन को जीवित कर दिया।
ऐसे हुई थी अर्जुन की मृत्यु : अर्जुन द्वारा यदुवंशियों के नाश की बात जानकर युधिष्ठिर को बहुत दु:ख हुआ। महर्षि वेदव्यास की बात मानकर द्रौपदी सहित पांडवों ने राज-पाट त्याग कर सशरीर स्वर्ग जाने का निश्चय किया। यात्रा करते-करते पांडव हिमालय तक पहुंच गए। हिमालय के दुर्गम क्षेत्र में द्रौपदी लड़खड़ाकर गिर पड़ीं। इसके बाद नकुल, सहदेव, अर्जुन और अंत में भीम भी गिरकर मृत्यु को प्राप्त हो गए। अंत में युधिष्ठिर और उनका कुत्ता ही सशरीर स्वर्ग पहुंचे।
