छतरपुर जिले की बड़ा मलहरा तहसील से मात्र 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है प्रसिद्ध तीर्थस्थल 'भीमकुंड'। मध्यप्रदेश के बुंदेलखंड में स्थित यह स्थान प्राचीनकाल से ही ऋषियों, मुनियों, तपस्वियों एवं साधकों की स्थली रही है। वर्तमान समय में यह स्थान धार्मिक पर्यटन एवं वैज्ञानिक शोध का केंद्र भी बन हुआ है। यहां स्थित जल कुंड भू-वैज्ञानिकों के लिए भी कौतूहल का विषय है। दरअसल, यह कुंड अपने भीतर 'अतल' गहराइयों को समेटे हुए हैं।
आश्चर्य की बात तो यह है कि वैज्ञानिक इस जल कुंड में कई बार गोताखोरी करवा चुके हैं, किंतु इस जल कुंड की थाह अभी तक कोई नहीं पा सका। ऐसी मान्यता है कि 18वीं शताब्दी के अंतिम दशक में बिजावर रियासत के महाराज ने यहां पर मकर संक्रांति के दिन मेले का आयोजन करवाया था। उस मेले की परंपरा आज भी कायम है। मेले में हर साल हजारों लोग शामिल होते हैं।
भीम कुंड एक गुफा में स्थित है। जब आप सीढ़ियों से अंदर कुंड की तरफ जाते हैं, तो यहां पर कुंड के चारों तरफ पत्थर ही पत्थर दिखाई देते हैं। यहां लाइट भी कम होती है, लेकिन यहां का नजारा हर किसी का मन मोह लेता है। भीम कुंड के ठीक ऊपर बड़ा-सा कटाव है, जिससे सूर्य की किरणें कुंड के पानी पर पड़ती हैं। सूर्य की किरणों से इस जल में अनेक इंद्रधनुष उभर आते हैं।
यह भी कहा जाता है कि इस कुंड में डूबने वाले व्यक्ति का मृत शरीर कभी ऊपर नहीं आता, जबकि आमतौर पर पानी में डूबने वाले व्यक्ति का शव एक समय पश्चात खुद-ब-खुद ऊपर आ जाता है। इस कुंड में डूबने वाला व्यक्ति सदा के लिए अदृश्य हो जाता है। भीम कुंड के प्रवेश द्वार तक जाने वाली सीढ़ियों के ऊपरी सिरे पर चतुर्भुज विष्णु तथा लक्ष्मी का विशाल मंदिर बना हुआ है।
विष्णु-लक्ष्मीजी के मंदिर के समीप एक और प्राचीन मंदिर स्थित है। इसके ठीक विपरीत दिशा में एक पंक्ति में छोटे-छोटे 3 मंदिर बने हुए हैं, जिनमें क्रमश: लक्ष्मी-नृसिंह, राम दरबार और राधा-कृष्ण के मंदिर हैं। भीम कुंड एक ऐसा तीर्थ स्थल है, जो व्यक्ति को इस लोक और परलोक दोनों के आनंद की अनुभूति कराता है।
क्या है भीमकुंड की कहानी : भीमकुंड से जुड़ी पौराणिक कथाएं भी हैं। ऐसी मान्यता है कि महाभारत के समय जब पांडवों को अज्ञातवास मिला था तब वे यहां के घने जंगलों से गुजर रहे थे। उसी समय द्रौपदी को प्यास लगी। लेकिन, यहां पानी का कोई स्रोत नहीं था। द्रौपदी व्याकुलता देख गदाधारी भीम ने क्रोध में आकर अपने गदा से पहाड़ पर प्रहार किया। इससे यहां एक पानी का कुंड निर्मित हो गया। कुंड के जल से पांडवों और द्रौपदी ने अपनी प्यास बुझाई और भीम के नाम पर ही इस का नाम भीम कुंड पड़ गया।

इसके आलावा इस कुंड को नील कुंड या नारद कुंड के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। बताते हैं कि एक समय नारदजी आकाश से गुजर रहे थे, उसी समय उन्हें एक महिला और पुरुष घायल अवस्था में दिखाई दिए। उन्होंने वहां आकर उनकी इस अवस्था का कारण पूछा तब उन्होंने बताया कि वे संगीत के राग-रागिनी हैं। वे तभी सही हो सकते हैं, जब कोई संगीत में निपुण व्यक्ति उनके लिए सामगान गाए।
नारदजी संगीत में पारंगत थे। उन्होंने उसी समय सामगान गाया जिसे सुनकर सारे देवतागण झूमने लगे। विष्णु भगवान भी सामगान सुनकर खुश हो गए और एक जल कुंड में परिवर्तित हो गए। उनके रंग के जैसे ही इस कुंड का जल नीला हुआ तभी से इसे नीलकुंड भी कहा जाने लगा।
विज्ञान क्यों हैरान? : कई वैज्ञानिकों ने इस पर रिसर्च करके पता लगाने की कोशिश की कि इसका जल इतना साफ और स्वच्छ कैसे है? और इसकी गहराई भी जानना चाही लेकिन आज तक कोई भी इसके रहस्य को सुलझा नहीं पाया है। एक बार जब गोताखोर इसके अंदर गए थे तो उन्होंने बताया था कि अंदर 2 कुएं जैसे बड़े छिद्र हैं। एक से पानी आता है और दूसरे से वापस जाता है और उसकी स्पीड भी बहुत तेज है।
जब हमने यहां मौजूद लोगों से बात की तब उन्होंने बताया कि उन्हें लगता है कि इसका संबंध सीधे समुद्र से है, क्योंकि इस कुंड के एक तरफ से जहां जाली नहीं लगी हुई है, वहां से जो भी लोग इसमें डूबे हैं उनकी लाश तक नहीं मिली है। इसके अलावा जब समुद्र में सुनामी आई थी तब इस कुंड में भी हलचल हुई थी। इसके पानी की लहरें 10 फुट तक उठ रही थीं। उस समय यहां मौजूद सारे के सारे लोग डरकर बाहर निकल गए थे।
रहस्य, जिससे आज तक पर्दा नहीं उठा : इसका जल हमेशा साफ और स्वच्छ रहता है। इसमें काफी गहराई तक की चीजें साफ दिखती हैं और जब सूर्य की रोशनी इस कुंड पर आती है तब बहुत ही मनमोहक दृश्य दिखता है। इसके अलावा एक रहस्य यह भी है कि इस कुंड का जलस्तर कभी कम नहीं होता। यहां पर बने आश्रम जहां बहुत सारे बच्चे भी रहते हैं और आसपास के सारे क्षेत्र में यहीं से पानी की सप्लाई होती है। लेकिन पानी खत्म होना तो दूर, गर्मियों के समय में भी यहां का जलस्तर कभी कम नहीं होता है।
एक बार तो सरकार की ओर से भी इसका तल जानने के लिए वॉटर पंप से यहां के पानी को निकाला गया था, तब भी यहां का स्तर कम नहीं हुआ।
