14 साल के सैम मैथ्यू पर रोबोटिक्स का जुनून ऐसा सवार हुआ कि उसने 11वीं के बाद स्कूल जाना बंद कर दिया। सैम अब अपने ही स्कूल में सप्ताह में एक बार अपने साथियों के साथ रोबोटिक्स की क्लास लेता है।
सैम मैथ्यू इन दिनों रोबोटिक्स में निपुणता हासिल करने के लिए दिल्ली के मेकर्स असायलम में समय बिताना पसंद करता है। सैम मैथ्यू की ही तरह स्कूल, कॉलेज और इंजीनियरिंग के छात्र अपने-अपने रूचि के मुताबिक मेकर्स असायलम में अपने आइडिया पर काम करते हैं और इस दिशा में आगे बढ़ने के लिए मेकर्स असायलम इन्हें जगह के साथ तकनीक, औजार और मशीन मुहैया कराता है।
सैम मैथ्यू ने डीडब्ल्यू से कहा, "जब मैं छठी क्लास में पढ़ता था तब मैंने स्कूल में विज्ञान की प्रदर्शनी के लिए एक कार बनाई थी, लेकिन प्रदर्शनी के दिन ही वो कार खराब हो गई, मुझे समझ में नहीं आया कि कार क्यों खराब हो गई, मुझे उस वक्त कोई बताने वाला नहीं था, तब मैंने इंटरनेट से रोबोटिक्स के बारे में जानने की कोशिश शुरु की। उस दिन से मुझे इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स में रूचि हो गई। अब मैं यहां आकर सीनियर छात्रों के साथ रोबोटिक्स पर काम करता हूं और कुछ नया करने की कोशिश करता हूं।''
दिल्ली स्थित मेकर्स असायलम का उद्देश्य ऐसे लोगों को रास्ता दिखाना जिनके पास आइडिया तो है लेकिन उसे अमल में कैसे लाया जा सकता है ये पता नहीं। मेकर्स असायलम उन्हें आइडिया पर काम करने के अलावा टूल्स, मशीन, लेजर कटिंग और थ्री डी प्रिटिंग इस्तेमाल करने की दक्षता देता है।

मेकर्स असायलम, दिल्ली के क्यूरेटर इशान रस्तोगी कहते हैं, "मेकर्स असायलम एक तरह का मैदान है, जहां कलाकार, इंजीनियर और विचारक एक छत के नीचे आकर अपने-अपने आइडिया पर काम करते हैं। यह एक ऐसा समुदाय जिसमें विपरीत विचारधारा वाले लोग साथ काम करते हैं। हमारे पास जो लोग आते हैं उनके पास आइडिया तो होता है लेकिन उस आइडिया को प्रोडक्ट तक ले जाने का संसाधन नहीं होता। यहां हम उन्हें सिखाते हैं कि कैसे आइडिया को रैपिड प्रोटोटाइपिंग बनाते हैं और साथ ही मशीन को इस्तेमाल करने के लिए भी ट्रेनिंग देते हैं।''
मेकर्स असायलम में फिलहाल युवा इंजीनियर थ्री डी प्रिंटिंग, लेजर कटिंग, रोबोटिक्स, एप्लिकेशन डेवलेपमेंट, लकड़ी की कारीगरी, प्रोस्थेटिक अंग पर अपने आइडिया पर काम कर रहे हैं।
35 साल के अभिजीत सिंह भी मेकर्स असायलम में डिजाइनिंग पर दक्षता हासिल करने के लिए यहां हमेशा आते हैं और अपने साथियों के साथ मिलकर प्रोडक्ट को बेहतर बनाने के लिए रिसर्च और प्रयोग करते हैं। अभिजीत बताते हैं कि उन्हें लेजर कटिंग फर्नीचर में काम करने का शौक है और वह इसका बिजनेस मॉडल बनाना चाहते हैं।
अभिजीत के मुताबिक, "मेरा मानना है कि भारत में डिजाइन का चलन बहुत कम है, लोग इसके बारे में ज्यादा गंभीर नहीं दिखते। लोग डिजाइन की अहमियत नहीं समझते हैं। अगर डिजाइन में भारत में ध्यान दिया जाता है तो यहां भी इस क्षेत्र में निवेश संभव है। ऐसे में हमें देश में डिजाइन और डू इट योरसेल्फ (अपने आप करो) कल्चर को बढ़ावा देना होगा।''
आर्किटेक्ट की छात्रा एस गायत्री भी यहां लेजर कटिंग सिखने आई है, वह बताती है कि लेजर कटिंग मशीन की उपलब्धता दिल्ली में बहुत कम है और वह अपने प्रोजेक्ट के लिए यहां लेजर कटिंग सिखने आई है। प्रयोगशाला के प्रशिक्षक गायत्री को लेजर कटिंग मशीन को कंप्यूटर से जोड़ना, तापमान निर्धारित करना और फिर डिजाइन के मुताबकि लकड़ी के चयन के बारे में बताता है। दो-एक बार बताने के बाद गायत्री लेजर कटिंग मशीन को इस्तेमाल करना जान जाती है।
