पहले मैच में शतक लगाने वाले बर्न्स ने इसके बाद मिशेल स्टार्क की गेंद पर कवर ड्राइव पर शानदार चौका लगाया। रूट ने भी इसके बाद मोर्चा संभालते हुए पैट कमिंस की गेंद पर चौका लगाया।
बर्न्स ने स्टार्क की गेंद पर ही पारी का अपना 7वां चौका लगाकर 100 गेंद में अर्द्धशतक पूरा किया। इससे पहले स्मिथ की 211 रन की पारी के दम पर ऑस्ट्रेलिया ने गुरुवार को 8 विकेट पर 497 रन पर पारी घोषित की।
30 साल के स्मिथ ने श्रृंखला में अब तब 147.25 की औसत से 589 रन बनाए है। लार्ड्स में दूसरे एशेज टेस्ट में स्मिथ पहली पारी में आर्चर की बाउंसर पर ही चोटिल हुए थे और बेहोशी जैसी स्थिति के कारण दूसरी पारी और तीसरे टेस्ट में नहीं खेल पाए थे।
स्मिथ का मौजूदा एशेज श्रृंखला में यह तीसरा शतक है। गेंद से छेड़छाड़ प्रकरण के कारण एक साल के प्रतिबंध के बाद वापसी करते हुए स्मिथ ने एजबस्टन में अपने पहले ही टेस्ट की दोनों पारियों में 144 और 142 रन बनाए थे जिससे ऑस्ट्रेलिया ने यह मैच 251 रन से जीता था। 5 मैचों की श्रृंखला अभी 1-1 से बराबरी पर है।
