भगवान विष्णु ने भगवान शिव से उनका बाल रूप देखने का अनुरोध किया और उनकी इच्छा पूरी करने के लिए भगवान शिव ने बालक के रूप गृहपति अवतार लिया। उसके बाद भगवान शिव ने भी भगवान विष्णु के बाल रूप को देखने की इच्छा जताई। पहले अयोध्या में श्रीराम के और फिर गोकुल में श्रीकृष्ण अवतार के बाल रूप को देखने के लिए स्वयं भगवान शिव वेश बदल कर पृथ्वी पर आये। श्रीराम और श्रीकृष्ण दोनों के आराध्य देव भगवान शिव ही थे।
·श्रीकृष्ण की प्रेमिका राधा का जिक्र वास्तव में महाभारत में है ही नहीं। राधा का उल्लेख ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण, गीत गोविंद और जनश्रुतियों में रहा है। राधा श्रीकृष्ण से 7 वर्ष बडी थीं और कृष्ण के गोकुल से चले जाने के बाद उनका विवाह रायण या अय्यन नाम के गोप से हुआ था। इसके पश्चात केवल एक बार ही राधा श्रीकृष्ण से द्वारका में आकर मिली थी जहां सत्यभामा ने उनकी परीक्षा ली और मुंह की खाई। परीक्षा के बाद कृष्ण ने सत्यभामा से कहा था कि फिर कभी राधा का अपमान करने का प्रयत्न ना करें क्यूंकि उनके ह्रदय में सदैव राधा रहती है।
·कई लोग द्रौपदी को श्रीकृष्ण की बहन कहते हैं लेकिन ये सही नहीं है। श्रीकृष्ण द्रौपदी को अपनी सखी मानते थे। उनकी सौतेली बहन सुभद्रा के अतिरिक्त उनकी एक और बहन थी। उसका नाम एकानंगा था जो उनके पालक माँ-बाप यशोदा और नन्द की पुत्री थी। कही-कहीं उन्हें ही विंध्यवासिनी देवी के नाम से पूजा जाता है। जब कृष्ण सत्यभामा के साथ देवराज इंद्र के यहां से वापस लौट रहे थे तब एकानंगा उनसे मिलने आई थी।
·श्रीकृष्ण की प्रसिद्ध बहन सुभद्रा वास्तव में उनकी सौतेली एवं बलराम की सहोदर बहन थी (रोहिणी की पुत्री) और वो कृष्ण से 22 एवं बलराम से 23 वर्ष छोटी थीं। सुभद्रा का जन्म वसुदेव के कंस के कारागार से मुक्त होने के कई वर्ष बाद हुआ था।
·श्रीकृष्ण ने पवनपुत्र हनुमान की सहायता से सत्यभामा, गरुड़, बलराम, अर्जुन एवं सुदर्शन चक्र का अभिमान तोड़ा। सत्यभामा को अपनी सुंदरता का, गरुड़ को अपनी गति का, बलराम को अपनी शक्ति का, अर्जुन को अपनी धनुर्विद्या का और सुदर्शन को अपनी मारक क्षमता का गर्व था।
बलराम ने पौंड्र के सेनापति जिसे वो हनुमान ही मानता था, केवल एक प्रहार में वध किया था। कृष्ण की इच्छा से हनुमान साधारण वानर के रूप में उनसे लड़े जिससे बलराम को समझ आ गया कि वो अकेले सर्वश्रेष्ठ नही है। अर्जुन के बाणों से बने बांध को हनुमान से सिर्फ एक अंगुली से तोड़ उनका घमंड दूर किया। कृष्ण की आज्ञा से गरुड़ हनुमान को निमंत्रण देने गए और कहा कि श्रीराम ने आपको बुलाया है इसीलिए आप मेरे पीठ पर बैठ जाये ताकि मैं आपको उनके पास ले जाऊं।
हनुमान ने कहा कि तुम चलो मैं पीछे आता हूं। गरुड़ अपनी पूरी शक्ति से उड़ा पर द्वारका पहुंचने पर हनुमान को वहां खुद से पहले पहुंचा देख उसका घमंड भी टूटा। सुदर्शन ने उन्हें रोकने की कोशिश की पर रुद्रावतार ने सुदर्शन को अपने मुंह में दबा लिया और अंदर पहुंचे। वहां कृष्ण श्रीराम और सत्यभामा सीता के रूप में बैठे थे। हनुमान ने पहुंचे ही कृष्ण को प्रणाम कर कहा कि हे प्रभु! आपने किस दासी को अपने पास बिठा रखा है। ये तो माता सीता के 16 वें अंश के बराबर भी नही। इससे सत्यभामा का अभिमान भी टूट गया।

·युधिष्ठिर के राजसुय यज्ञ में सभी करने के लिए अलग अलग काम दिए गए थे। दुर्योधन को धन का प्रबंधन और कर्ण को ऋषियों और याचकों को दान देने का काम दिया गया। श्रीकृष्ण उस यज्ञ में अग्रदेवता थे फिर भी उन्होंने स्वयं ब्राम्हणों और ऋषियों के पैर धोने का कार्य लिया। यज्ञ में ऋषि कणाद को भी मना कर वही लाये थे।
·बलराम की पत्नी रेवती उनसे वर्षों नहीं बल्कि युगों बड़ी थी। गर्ग संहिता के अनुसार रेवती के पिता ककुद्मी सतयुग में अपनी पुत्री के साथ ब्रह्मा जी से मिलने गए। वहां उन्होंने रेवती के लिए किसी योग्य वर की प्रार्थना की। ब्रह्मदेव ने हंसते हुए कहा कि जितना समय आपने यहां बिताया है उतने समय में पृथ्वी पर 27 युग बीत चुके हैं और अभी द्वापर का अंतिम चरण चल रहा है। आप शीघ्र पृथ्वी पर पहुंचिए। वहाँ शेषावतार बलराम आपकी पुत्री के सर्वथा योग्य हैं। जब रेवती पृथ्वी पर आकर बलराम से मिली तो उनकी लम्बाई में बड़ा अंतर था। द्वापर में जन्म लेने के कारण बलराम केवल 7 हाथ लम्बे थे जबकि सतयुग की होने के कारण रेवती 21 हाथ की थीं। बलराम ने अपने हल के दबाव से रेवती की ऊंचाई भी 7 हाथ की कर दी।
·श्रीकृष्ण की पटरानी रुक्मिणी थी। उनके अतिरिक्त उनकी तीन मुख्य रानियों में जांबवंती और सत्यभामा की गणना की जाती है। मुख्य आठ रानियों में इन तीनों के अतिरिक्त सत्या, कालिंदी, लक्ष्मणा, मित्रविन्दा एवं भद्रा की गिनती की जाती है। उनकी 100 अन्य मुख्य रानियां भी थी तो इस प्रकार उनकी मुख्य पत्नियों की संख्या 108 बताई जाती है। इसके अतिरिक्त नरकासुर का वध कर उन्होंने वहां से छुड़ाई गयी 16000 कन्याओं से भी विवाह किया क्युंकि किसी अन्य ने उन्हें स्वीकार नहीं किया। श्रीकृष्ण अपनी माया से हर रात्रि अपनी हर रानी से साथ रहते थे। उन्होंने प्रत्येक पत्नी से 10-10 पुत्र प्राप्त किए जिसकी संख्या 161080 होती है। दुर्भाग्यवश उन्हें स्वयं सभी का नाश करना पड़ा।
·बलराम और रेवती की पुत्री का नाम वत्सला (शशिरेखा) था। सुनने में ये अजीब लगता है और इसका कोई वर्णन महाभारत में नहीं है पर दक्षिण भारत की दन्त कथाओं के अनुसार वत्सला का विवाह उसकी अपनी बुआ सुभद्रा के पुत्र अभिमन्यु के साथ हुआ था जो उसका भाई भी था। बलराम ने वत्सला का विवाह दुर्योधन के पुत्र लक्षमण के साथ तय किया। इससे अभिमन्यु बड़ा दुखी हो गया किन्तु जब घटोत्कच्छ ने देखा कि उसका भाई बड़ा व्यथित है तो उसने विवाह से पूर्व वत्सला का अपहरण कर लिया और फिर उसका विवाह अभिमन्यु से करवा दिया।
·श्रीकृष्ण के प्रथम पुत्र प्रद्युम्न का अपहरण जन्म के तुरंत बाद मय दानव के द्वारा कर लिया गया। कहते है कि प्रद्युम्न को रुक्मिणी ने देखा भी नहीं था। मय दानव के यहां उसका पालन पोषण उसकी दासी माया ने किया। माया, जो कि रति का अवतार थी, जानती थी कि प्रद्युम्न ही कामदेव का अवतार है और इसी कारण उसने प्रद्युम्न का पालन पोषण मातृत्व के भाव से नहीं किया। बड़े होने के बाद प्रद्युम्न ने माया से विवाह किया और 16 वर्ष बाद वापस लौटे। माया उम्र में प्रद्युम्न से तो क्या, उसकी अपनी माँ रुक्मिणी से भी बड़ी थी। कहा जाता है कि रुक्मिणी ने प्रद्युम्न को देखते ही पहचान लिया क्युंकि उसकी शक्ल कृष्ण से बहुत अधिक मिलती थी।

श्रीकृष्ण की पत्नी रुक्मिणी के बड़े भाई रुक्मी कृष्ण के विरोधी थे। बाद में सुलह होने के बाद उन्होंने कृष्ण और बलराम को चौसर खेलने बुलाया। कृष्ण ने जाने से मना कर दिया पर उनके मना करने के बाद भी बलराम खेलने गए। बलराम चौसर में कुशल नहीं थे इसीलिए वो बार-बार हार रहे थे और रुक्मी हर बार उनकी खिल्ली उड़ा रहा था जिस कारण वे अत्यंत क्रोध में थे। अंत में बलराम ने खेल ख़त्म करने के लिए अपने पास से आखिरी 100000 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं दांव पर लगा दी और जीत गए। रुक्मी ने छल से पांसे बदल दिए और कहने लगा कि वो जीता है। इसपर क्रोधित बलराम ने वही पड़े कांसे के पात्र से रुक्मी का वध कर दिया। बाद में वे बड़ा पछताए और फिर कभी चौसर ना खेलने की प्रतिज्ञा की। इसीलिए जब उन्हें पता चला कि पाण्डव जुए में अपना सब कुछ यहां तक की अपनी पत्नी को भी हार गए हैं तो बलराम ने दुर्योधन से अधिक युधिष्ठिर को ही दोषी माना।
जहां प्रद्युम्न की शक्ल कृष्ण से अत्यधिक मिलती थी, प्रद्युम्न के पुत्र अनिरुद्ध अपने दादा कृष्ण के प्रतिलिपि ही थे। जब बाणासुर की पुत्री उषा ने अपनी सखी से कहा कि उसने स्वप्न में एक अति सुन्दर राजकुमार देखा है और वो उससे ही विवाह करेगी तो उसकी सखी ने पहले उसे प्रद्युम्न का चित्र बना कर दिखाया जिसे देख कर उसने कहा कि इनकी शक्ल उस स्वप्न वाले पुरुष से बहुत मिलती है पर ये वो नहीं है। फिर उसने कृष्ण का चित्र बनाया जिसे देख कर उषा ने लज्जा से सर झुका लिया। फिर उसने कहा कि हां ये वही व्यक्ति है पर ना जाने क्यों इसे देख कर उसके मन में पितृ तुल्य आदर का भाव आ रहा है। ये सुन कर उसकी सखी समझ गयी कि उषा ने स्वप्न में अनिरुद्ध को देखा है।
देवर्षि नारद से वार्तालाप में उन्होंने स्वीकार किया था कि वे अपनों यादव बंधुओं (सात्यिकी, कृतवर्मा, अक्रूर, सत्राजित आदि) के कृत्यों से ही सर्वाधिक क्षुब्ध थे। श्रीकृष्ण अपनी पत्नी सत्यभामा से सर्वाधिक प्रेम करते थे किन्तु अधिक क्षुब्द भी उन्ही से थे। अपने पुत्रों में श्रीकृष्ण जांबवंती के पुत्र साम्ब से सर्वाधिक दुखी थे। साम्ब ने उनकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध दुर्योधन की पुत्री लक्ष्मणा से विवाह किया और वही एक ऋषि के श्राप के कारण पूरे यादव वंश के विनाश का कारण भी बना।
श्रीकृष्ण के वंश में एकमात्र जीवित व्यक्ति उनका प्रपौत्र वज्रनाभ था जिसे युधिष्ठिर ने इंद्रप्रस्थ के सिंहासन पर बैठाया। हस्तिनापुर शासन अर्जुन के पौत्र और पांडव कुल के एकमात्र जीवित व्यक्ति परीक्षित को मिला।
कृष्ण ने काशी के राजा और वहां के पाखंडी ब्राह्मणों के विरुद्ध अभियान किया और अपने सुदर्शन चक्र से काशी को जलाकर राख कर दिया किन्तु भगवान शिव के त्रिशूल पर टिके होने के कारण वे उसे पूरी तरह नष्ट नहीं कर सके। इस प्रकार महादेव के कारण काशी की रक्षा हुई और उनकी कृपा के कारण ही ये नगरी प्रलय में भी नष्ट नहीं होती।
