किही शादी के बाद घर में पहली बार बिदा होकर आई है। सारी सखियां उसे घेर-घेरकर छेड़ रही हैं। किही एक अद्वितीय सुंदरी है और उसका पति भी कुछ कम नहीं। उसका पति काफी हष्ट-पुष्ट और छह फुट लंबा है। ऐसा लगता है जैसे वह कोई फोर्स का जवान हो। ताकत ऐसी कि एक-दो आदमी हाथ न लगे।
किही का पति तोले कहीं खड़ा हो जाता तो ऐसा लगता कि जैसे कोई बड़ा पैसे वाला बनिया हो। किही अधिक दिन मायके रुकना नहीं चाहती थी, कारण था उसके पति बाहर दूर के शहर में नौकरी करते थे इसलिए वह उन्हें अधिक अकेला छोड़ना नहीं चाहती थी। शायद तोले भी अपनी पत्नी से अधिक दिनों तक दूर नहीं रहना चाहता था।
दोनों ने फोन पर बात की और फिर तोले ससुराल आ गया किही को लेने के लिए। नई-नई शादी हुई और किही को मायके आए चार दिन भी न हुए थे। अब इससे अच्छा मौका क्या होता? सहेलियों को बहाना मिल गया, साथ में तोले से भी गप्पे हांक लेतीं।
सहेलियों को तोले से बात करते देख किही बड़े नखरीले अंदाज में व्यंग्य करती। इन्हीं में से किसी को लिए जाओ, हम तो अब न जाएंगे। तोले भी जोर से हंस देता। वातावरण खुशनुमा था। जीवन पूर्ण सुख से भरा था। अगले दिन किही ससुराल पहुंच गई। समय पलक झपकते बीत गया। आज ऐसा दिन आ गया, जब तोले को अपनी पत्नी से दूर कमाने के लिए जाना था।

अब साथ बीता समय एक सुनहरी याद भर था। तोले ने पत्नी को बताया कि वह अपना ख्याल रखे और वह जल्द वापस आ जाएगा। अब किही को कहीं चैन न आता। वह बेचैन-सी रहती। उसे पति की बहुत याद आती, पर सिर्फ यादों में तड़पकर रह जाती। फिर सोचती, अरे फिर वही दिन आएंगे लेकिन विरहन कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ रही थी। घर में जेठ और जेठानी थे।
अब तोले पहले अपनी पत्नी को फोन करता और फिर भाई-भौजाई से भी बात कर लेता। घर में संयुक्त परिवार होते हुए भी बहुत प्रेम था। दिन गुजरते गए। ऐसे दिन जिनका एक-एक पल विरह के सौ बरस संजोए था।
होली का समय था। चार दिन बाद होली थी। आज अचानक फोन की घंटी बजी तो न जाने क्यों किही को बहुत अधिक रोमांच हुआ। वह झट फोन उठाकर बोली- कल रात को फोन क्यों नहीं किया? क्या कोई गलती हो गई हमसे?
तोले ने जवाब दिया- चल पगली, कल सामान पैक करना था और आज घर के लिए निकल चुका हूं। वह बोली- और आप भी तो पागल हो, पहले बता देते आज आओगे तो आस लगी रहती आज के दिन की तो इतना तंग तो न होती।
पूरे घर में तोले के आने की सूचना पर उल्लास का माहौल चरम पर आ गया। अब राहत कहां और किसे? पल-पल फोन शुरू हो गए। कहां हो तो कभी पूछती अब कहां आ गए हो। कभी भौजाई फोन लगा देती- भैया अब कहां तक आ गए? तो भाई भी कान सटाकर जवाब सुन लेता।
किही ने फिर फोन मिला दिया। अब कहां पर हो? जवाब आया- आज साधन की दिक्कत है, एक प्राइवेट कार मिल गई है, बस बैठ चुका हूं। अब मुश्किल से तीन-चार घंटे और लगेंगे।
किही को चैन कहां? दस मिनट बाद फिर फोन मिला दिया। आवाज आई टू टू टू टू आप जिस उपभोक्ता को कॉल कर रहे हैं, वह इस समय स्विच-ऑफ है।
अब किही लगातार तीन घंटे फोन मिलाती रही। किही का फोन आखिरकार स्विच ऑफ हो गया। किही हार मानने वाली कहां थी। वह जेठ के पास पहुंची और बोली- दादा देर भई, फोन कर लो। जेठानी आई और फोन दे दिया।
जेठ बोले- हमसे फोन तो लग नहीं रहा था, तुम फोन ले जाओ, जब लगे तो बता देना। वह फिर प्रयास में जुट गई। कुछ ही क्षणों में वह फोन भी स्विच ऑफ हो गया।
किही बोली- दीदी दरवाजे पर चलो न। जेठानी फौरन दरवाजे पर उसके साथ बिना आनाकानी पहुंच गई।
प्रतीक्षा की घड़ियों की हर सुई थम-सी गई थी। वह सोच रही थी अब दिखने वाले हैं बस। और निगाह सिर्फ उस राह पर जिस पर से प्रियतम गए थे।
लगभग तीन घंटे हो गए। परिवार के लोगों को चिंता की लकीरों ने पहले बखूबी घेरा हुआ था, पर जैसे-जैसे तीन-चार घंटे और बीते, वैसे ही वह लकीरें अब घेरने के बजाय उन्हें जकड़ने लगीं।
हर शख्स परेशान हो उठा। किसी को रातभर नींद नहीं आई। किही तो सोचती अभी दरवाजे पर वह दस्तक देगा और तो न तड़पाएगा वह मुझे। फिर सोचती आने दो खूब लड़ूंगी। फिर सोचती, नहीं ऐसा थोड़े करेगी, उसे पहले आराम का पूरा मौका देगी।
न मालूम कितने विचारों के ढेर लगते चले गए और रात बीत गई। किही ने देखा कि सुबह हो रही है प्रकाश की तीव्रता अंधकार को ध्वस्त करने में सफल हो चुकी थी। वह जेठ के पास पहुंची और बोलने को किया तो सिर्फ आंसू निकले। वह अपनी कोई बात कह नहीं पा रही थी।
बड़ी विचित्र स्थिति बनी थी। जेठ-जेठानी सब परेशान खड़े थे और जेठ के सामने वह 20 साल की नवविवाहिता खड़ी थी।
जेठ सोच रहे थे कि इसे क्या दिलासा दूं? और न जाने कैसा होगा मेरा भाई। वह सोच रही थी दादा से मैं कुछ कहना चाहती हूं, पर आवाज क्यों नहीं निकल पा रही। ये निठल्ले आंसू क्या बता पाएंगे उन्हें, अकारण बहते ही जा रहे हैं।
घरवाले थाने भी पहुंचे तो थानेदार बोले- जहां का मामला है उसी शहर में जाओ। दोपहर को जेठ बोले- चारों तरफ फोन करवा दिया, कुछ पता नहीं चला। वे शाम को तैयार हुए और उसी शहर को निकल पड़े, जहां उनका भाई था। वहां पहुचे तो एक मीडियाकर्मी से मुलाकात हो गई।
उसने बताया- थानेदार नया है, बाप की जगह पर लगा है, पर बहुत सख्त है। चारों तरफ अपनी हनक आग की तरह फैला रखी है। मीडियाकर्मी ने जब पूरा केस सुना तो थाने से मदद करवाने के लिए फोन कर दिया।
जैसे-तैसे थानेदार ने बिना रिपोर्ट लिखे उसे ढुंढवाने की बात कही।
थानेदार बोले- ढूंढो तुम बाकी सपोर्ट हमारी है, हम मदद कर देंगे और माल-ताल गया होगा तो बरामद करवा देंगे।
इसके बाद तोले के भाई एक महीने तक शहर की खाक छानते हुए घर लौटने पर विवश हो गए। घर आया तो देखा कि तोले की पत्नी सूखकर दुबली-दुबली-सी हो गई थी। घर में सब दुःखभरा माहौल था।
दो-तीन महीने बीते कि एक फोन आया कि तोले मेरे पास है। कितने पैसे दे सकते हो? जवाब मिला- बात करा दो, हम गरीब हैं दस-बीस हजार दे डालेंगे। तोले का भाई फिर उसी शहर पहुंचा और वहां के थानेदार से मदद मांगी।
थानेदार ने नंबर लिया। फुल जलवे से उसी नंबर पर कॉल लगाकर बोले- मैं पुलिस एसआई फलाना बोल रहा हूं और फिर वह नंबर स्विच ऑफ हो गया। पुलिस को नंबरों की अंतिम लोकेशन तो मिली, पर अपराधियों का कोई सुराग न मिल सका।
अब पुलिस ने जब देखा तोले सब उसी के सहारे चाहता है तो उसे वहां से भगा दिया।
अब तो दरोगा साहब कहते हैं- तू थाने आया ही कब बे।
तोले के भाई ने सोचा अब घर लौटा जाए। बाप की जगह लगे उस पुलिस के अधिकारी को क्या पता कि मुझ पर क्या गुजरी होगी। अब कहां और कैसे ढूंढू उसे?
तोले के भाई को अब उसकी पत्नी की बड़ी सोच हो गई थी। वह सोच रहा था वे जिम्मेदार तो फोन पर हनक दिखाने से बाज नहीं आए, उनका तो क्या और वह बर्बाद हो गई।
आज एक साल होने को आया है। आज तोले 24 साल का हो जाता। तोले की यादें अब भी कहर बनकर बरस रही थी जिसका सबसे बड़ा असर अब 21 साल की हो चुकी नवयुवती पर था जिसे अब भी तोले के आने की आस थी और जो दरवाजे पर खट-खट होते ही पागलों की तरह दौड़ती है।
हर बार किही निराश होती है अगली आशा के लिए। जेठ की और भौजाई की भी एक अनिश्चितकालीन प्रतीक्षा जारी थी भाई और देवर से अधिक किही के लिए।
और वह बर्बाद हो गई, पर फिर कब आबाद होगी शायद सिर्फ प्रतीक्षा के माध्यम से वह आशा जीवित रखे थी जिसका कोई ओर-छोर न था।
