किसी भी कलाकार के लिए उसकी कला ही उसकी पूजा होती है, क्योंकि अपनी कला में डूबकर वह गहरी तल्लीनता के मध्य स्थित शांति को पाता है। कलाओं में यह शक्ति होती है कि वह इंसान को आध्यात्मिक आनंद दे।
सृजनात्मकता की इसी क्षमता को देखते हुए शायद पारंपरिक बुद्धिमत्ता ने त्योहारों से जुड़े रस्मो-रिवाजों में तरह-तरह की कला और सृजनात्मकता को जोड़ा। चाहे वह फिर पूजा-आरती के साथ जुड़ा गीत-संगीत हो, देवी-पूजा के संग का गरबा नृत्य या फिर रंगोलियां-मांडने इत्यादि।
कई पूजाओं में तो पूजा के संग मूर्तिकला को भी महत्व दिया गया है। मिट्टी के बने गोगादेव हों या मां पार्वती, पुरानी स्त्रियों के लिए स्वयं ही मिट्टी की मूरत बनाना, फिर उसकी पूजा करना एक आनंददायी शगल रहा है। साधारण मिट्टी से अनगढ़-सी मूर्ति भी स्वयं बनाना उतना ही मोहक रहा होगा जैसा बच्चों के लिए मिट्टी के खिलौने बनाना।
जिन्हें बचपन में मिट्टी के चकला-बेलन, मिट्टी का हाथी, मिट्टी के लड्डू बनाने का अवसर मिला होगा वही यह सुख जान सकते हैं। खैर, अब तो बच्चों से भी यह मजा छिन गया है। उनके पास न मिट्टी है, न समय, न आज्ञा कि वे हाथों और कपड़ों को मैला करने का खेल खेलें। यही स्थिति बड़ों की भी है।
रेडिमेड भगवान की चट-पट पूजा करके वे पूजा करने की रूढ़ि को तो कायम रखे हुए हैं, मगर इस बहाने प्रकृति और सृजनात्मकता के करीब होने की बात भूल गए हैं। अब सभी लोग बनी-बनाई मूर्तियों की पूजा करते हैं।

यहां तक भी उचित है क्योंकि यह उस मूर्तिकार का सम्मान है जिसकी कला उसे लोगों से जुड़ने और रोजगार प्राप्त करने के काम आ रही है। लेकिन बात इससे काफी आगे बढ़ चुकी है। पिछले दशकों में मूर्ति की मिट्टी केवल कच्ची अनगढ़ मिट्टी न रही, यह मिलावटयुक्त होती गई।
मूर्तियों पर रसायनयुक्त रंग चढ़ने लगे और देवों की मूर्तियां दैत्याकार बनने लगीं! फिर हर साल नई मूर्ति का चलन! इसके चलते मूर्ति विसर्जन एक पर्यावरण विरोधी कृत्य बन गया। यह नदी-नाले जाम करने लगा, जल प्रदूषण का सबब बन गया। हर शहर के, हर ओने-कोने पर मूर्ति वह भी एक-दूसरे से होड़ लेते हुए आकार की। फिर उसका विसर्जन, यानी आज जिन्हें मंगलमूर्ति कहते हुए लोग पूजा कर रहे थे, कल उनकी दुर्दशा। बाद में नालों में बहती टूटी-फूटी मूर्तियां और जलस्रोतों के किनारे कहीं सूंड, कहीं कान, कहीं हाथ देखे जा सकते हैं।
पिछले दो-चार सालों में थोड़ी सजगता आई है, मगर वह चुनिंदा है। कुछ लोग इको-फ्रेंडली गणेशजी बना रहे हैं। साधारण मिट्टी के इको-फ्रेंडली गणपति को तसले में रखकर जब जल डाला जाता है तो मिट्टी घुल जाती है और मिट्टी वाला पानी किसी गमले या क्यारी में डाल दिया जाता है। नारियल, सुपारी आदि के गणपति भी इको-फ्रेंडली ही हैं।
इस मायने में चेतना की एक सुरसुरी-सी है, मगर ज्यादा लोगों के बीच यह चेतना नहीं है। इको-फ्रेंडली एप्रोच तो छोड़िए अभी तो तथाकथित भक्तगणों का एप्रोच सोसायटी-फ्रेंडली भी नहीं है।
त्योहार का मतलब कुछ लोग लाउड स्पीकर लगाकर शोर-शराबा करना, चंदा उमेठना समझते हैं। समझदार नागरिक इनकी इस 'भड़भड़-त्योहारबाजी' में शामिल होने की बजाय उन्हें हतोत्साहित करें तो ही अच्छा है।
