कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण त्रयोदशी को धनतेरस कहते हैं। इस दिन घर के द्वार पर तेरह दीपक जलाकर रखे जाते हैं। यह त्योहार दीपावली आने की पूर्व सूचना देता है। इस दिन नए बर्तन खरीदना शुभ माना जाता है। धनतेरस के दिन मृत्यु के देवता यमराज और भगवान धनवंतरी की पूजा का महत्व है।
क्यों मनाया जाता है धनतेरस का त्योहार-
भारतीय संस्कृति में स्वास्थ्य का स्थान धन से ऊपर माना जाता रहा है। यह कहावत आज भी प्रचलित है कि 'पहला सुख निरोगी काया, दूजा सुख घर में माया'इसलिए दीपावली में सबसे पहले धनतेरस को महत्व दिया जाता है। जो भारतीय संस्कृति के हिसाब से बिल्कुल अनुकूल है।
शास्त्रों में वर्णित कथाओं के अनुसार समुद्र मंथन के दौरान कार्तिक कृष्ण त्रयोदशी के दिन भगवान धनवंतरी अपने हाथों में अमृत कलश लेकर प्रकट हुए। मान्यता है कि भगवान धनवंतरी विष्णु के अंशावतार हैं। संसार में चिकित्सा विज्ञान के विस्तार और प्रसार के लिए ही भगवान विष्णु ने धनवंतरी का अवतार लिया था। भगवान धनवंतरी के प्रकट होने के उपलक्ष्य में ही धनतेरस का त्योहार मनाया जाता है।
क्या खास करें इस दिन-
इस दिन अपने सामर्थ्य अनुसार किसी भी रूप में चांदी एवं अन्य धातु खरीदना अति शुभ है। धन संपत्ति की प्राप्ति हेतु कुबेर देवता के लिए घर के पूजा स्थल पर दीप दान करें एवं मृत्यु देवता यमराज के लिए मुख्य द्वार पर भी दीप दान करें।
राजा बलि और वामन अवतार की कथा
धनतेरस से जुड़ी एक कथा है कि कार्तिक कृष्ण त्रयोदशी के दिन देवताओं के कार्य में बाधा डालने के कारण भगवान विष्णु ने असुरों के गुरु शुक्राचार्य की एक आंख फोड़ दी थी। कथा के अनुसार,देवताओं को राजा बलि के भय से मुक्ति दिलाने के लिए भगवान विष्णु ने वामन अवतार लिया और राजा बलि के यज्ञ स्थल पर पहुंच गए। शुक्राचार्य ने वामन रूप में भी भगवान विष्णु को पहचान लिया और राजा बलि से आग्रह किया कि वामन कुछ भी मांगे उन्हें इंकार कर देना। वामन साक्षात भगवान विष्णु हैं जो देवताओं की सहायता के लिए तुमसे सब कुछ छीनने आए हैं।
बलि ने शुक्राचार्य की बात नहीं मानी। वामन भगवान द्वारा मांगी गयी तीन पग भूमि,दान करने के लिए कमंडल से जल लेकर संकल्प लेने लगे। बलि को दान करने से रोकने के लिए शुक्राचार्य राजा बलि के कमंडल में लघु रूप धारण करके प्रवेश कर गए। इससे कमंडल से जल निकलने का मार्ग बंद हो गया। वामन भगवान शुक्रचार्य की चाल को समझ गए। भगवान वामन ने अपने हाथ में रखे हुए कुशा को कमण्डल में ऐसे रखा कि शुक्राचार्य की एक आंख फूट गई। शुक्राचार्य छटपटाकर कमण्डल से निकल आए।
इसके बाद बलि ने तीन पग भूमि दान करने का संकल्प ले लिया। तब भगवान वामन ने अपने एक पैर से संपूर्ण पृथ्वी को नाप लिया और दूसरे पग से अंतरिक्ष को। तीसरा पग रखने के लिए कोई स्थान नहीं होने पर बलि ने अपना सिर वामन भगवान के चरणों में रख दिया। बलि दान में अपना सब कुछ गंवा बैठा। इस तरह बलि के भय से देवताओं को मुक्ति मिली और बलि ने जो धन-संपत्ति देवताओं से छीन ली थी उससे कई गुणा धन-संपत्ति देवताओं को मिल गई। इस उपलक्ष्य में भी धनतेरस का त्योहार मनाया जाता है।
