'मैगी की बहस के बहाने, कुछ असहज प्रश्न'

मैगी, पिछले दशकों में बच्चों और युवाओं के आस्वाद पर आधिपत्य जमाकर निर्द्वन्द् रूप से 'तुरन्ता' भोज्य व्यंजनों की कतार में निर्विघ्न ढंग से सब से आगे बनी हुई थी।

उसने भारतीय व्यंजन-विधि की लध्दड़ता को खारिज करते हुए, मध्यमवर्गीय परिवारों में अपने लिए एक विशेष जगह बनाई। वह एक खास, उम्र और वर्ग के बीच 'मांगे मोर' की अतृप्ति का निर्माण करने में सफल हुई। 

यह विज्ञापन से पैदा किया गया लालसाधिक्य था, जिससे उसने भारतीय-परिवार को अपने अधीन कर लिया लेकिन खाद्य रूचि में, जनहित-चेतना को लेकर बवाल मचाने वाले विघ्नसंतोषियों ने उसके अनिंद्य साम्राज्य में सेंध लगाकर उसे कानूनी दॉव-पेचों से अपनी गौरवशाली जगह से अपदस्थ कर दिया। ताबड़तोब वह कई राज्यों में प्रतिबंधित भी कर दी गई।

केंटकी चिकन तो बहुत ही थोड़े दिनों के लिए फड़फड़ाया था और यथाशीघ्र ही धराशायी भी हो गया था लेकिन मैगी, एक लम्बी अवधि की उड़ान पर सवार थी। आस्वाद का आकाश उसके लिए अनन्त ही था लेकिन, सहसा उठ आए इस तह-ओ-बाल ने, उसे संदिग्ध बना दिया है। 

बहरहाल, पूरे देश में चौतरफा जिरहें उठ खड़ी हुईं हैं और उन जिरहों के जरिये जो प्रश्न उठ-उठकर लगातार हमारे सामने आ रहे हैं। उनकी भंगिमा, भर्त्सना की है। या फिर, अपने उन जनप्रिय सितारों को कलंक की कुचेष्टाओं से बिन दाग लगे बचाने की है, जिन्होंने इस उत्पाद में अपनी 'छवि' का निवेश करते हुए उसके विज्ञापन किये थे। उनको दाग अब अच्छे नहीं लगते। 

इसके पीछे उनके तर्क भी हैं कि उन्होंने तो पेशेगत विवशता के चलते केवल विज्ञापन ठीक उसी तरह किये थे, जैसा कि वे फिल्म में अभिनय करते है, अनुबंध के साथ। यह भी 'एड-फिल्म' ही है। वे उत्पाद के निर्माण से संबध्द कहां थे? ऐसे में उन्हें लांछित करते हुए, न्यायालय की दहलीज तक खींचने का खेल, नितान्त निन्दनीय है। भला इसमें उन भले लोगों का कैसा अपराध? असली अपराधी तो निर्माता हैं। फिर, उन्होंने विज्ञापन तो 'भूतकाल' में किये थे, अतः उन्हें 'वर्तमान' का दोषी कैसे बताया जा सकता है?

दरअस्ल, जब किसी वस्तु के विज्ञापन के लिए, उत्पादक, फिल्म या खेल के क्षेत्र में, लोकप्रियता के सहारे, 'नायकत्व' की छवि अर्जित कर चुके व्यक्ति को चुनता है तो वह उस वस्तु से समाज में, 'अति-संबंधता' गढ़ता है। 'प्रतिष्ठा-मूल्य', प्रज्ञा-विरोधी बनकर व्यक्ति से 'चयन का विवेक' छीन लेता है। 

वह उपभोग की स्वतंत्रता में हस्तक्षेप करता है। दिलचस्प तथ्य यह कि ऐसा वह, ग्राहक के खर्चे पर ही करता है क्योंकि विज्ञापन-फिल्म का खर्च, उत्पाद के मूल्य में ही समाहित होता है। 

बहरहाल, फिल्म का नायक, विज्ञापन में अपनी 'विश्वसनीयता और प्रतिष्ठा' के द्वारा, उपभोक्ता को, संशयरहित बनाकर उसे उस विज्ञापित वस्तु के संभावित ग्राहक में बदल देता है। वह ग्राहक 'भविष्य' में ही स्थित है इसलिए तमाम 'भूतकाल' में रिकार्ड किए गए विज्ञापन, 'भविष्य' में ही अपना काम करते हैं। 

वे उन हवाई लड़ाकों की तरह होते हैं, जो आकाश से बम-वर्षा करते हैं और थल-सेना पहुंचकर कब्जा जमाती है। 'छवि के विस्फोट' से वे उपभोक्ता की क्रय-चेतना करते हैं और बाजार उन पर कब्जा कर लेता है। प्रश्न यहीं से खड़ा होता है कि जब कोई व्यक्ति, अपने 'प्रतिष्ठा-मूल्य' को, लोकप्रियता के सहारे, उच्चतम दर पर ले जाता है तो फिर उसका 'प्रतिबध्दता-मूल्य' कैसे पीछे छूट जाता है? जबकि, उसकी प्रतिष्ठा ही उस उत्पाद को विश्वसनीय बनाती है। नतीजतन, उसे 'विश्वास' का 'घात' करने पर दोषी क्यों नहीं माना जा सकता? 

आप अपनी सामाजिक-हित की जवाबदेही से, हाथ झाड़कर अलग खड़े नहीं हो सकते। दुनिया के किसी भी, 'आदर्शों से उफनते जनतंत्र' में भी, लिबर्टी ऑफ ट्रेड के नाम पर सामाजिक-अहित करने वाले पदार्थों के व्यवसाय के लिए स्वतन्त्र नहीं हो सकते। फिर तो नशीले पदार्थ बेचने वाला या हिंसा का व्यापारी भी व्यवसाय की स्वतंत्रता की मांग करेगा। 

अब जरा हम मैगी की इस व्यावसायिक अति-व्याप्ति को थोड़ा उलट-पुलट कर देखें। कहना न होगा कि जब हम मैगी को उसके सम्पूर्ण परिप्रेक्ष्य में देखते हैं तो लगता है कि यह उत्पाद, केवल खाद्य-रूचि में ही परिवर्तन नहीं कर रहा था, बल्कि वह भारतीय परिवार की सांस्कृतिक-संरचना में सेंध लगाता हुआ, अपनी सफलता की राह बना रहा था। 

यह भारत का पहला सफलता के साथ, बहु-प्रचारित तुरन्ता-व्यंजन था, जिसका पैकेट भूख की तीव्रता का चटपट समाधान नहीं कर रहा था बल्कि मुख्यतः वह भूख और स्वास्थ्य को हटाकर स्वाद को केन्द्र में ला रहा था। उसने 'स्वाद' और 'स्वास्थ्य' के द्वैत को कम किया। अधीरता और अतृप्ति को अभीष्ट बनाकर उपभोग मूल्य को, अधिकतम बनाने में कामयाबी हासिल की। 

'खाये जा, खाये जा, उत्पाद के गुण गाये जा' के बिक्री मंत्र ने, भूख की नैसर्गिकता को नगण्य बनाया और, उसको भोजन के विकल्प की जगह स्थापित करने का काम किया। 

हम यह याद करें कि इसने पहली बार किचन की 'किच-किच' से मुक्त मां को रचा। किचन को यातना-घर की तरह प्रस्तुत करना, उपभोग की संस्कृति का बाजार-निर्मित फण्डा आया। उसने वस्तु-सेवा का सांस्कृतिक रूप गढ़ा, जो बहुत जल्दी स्वीकार्य बन गया। दो मिनट में भूख का बंदोबस्त करने वाली 'फास्ट' मां आई। वह निदा फाजली के चटनी के स्वाद में ममत्व वाली मां को लानत भेजने वाली मां हुई। 

यह ममत्व की उत्तर-आधुनिक प्रतीति थी। वह बेटे को खाना खिलाने की खुशी से ज्यादा, ब्राण्ड की खुशी से भरी हुई थी। बाद में वह अपदस्थ हो गई और बेटा स्वयं ही मैगी बनाने में निर्भर हो गया। यह उस मां की नई स्वयं-पाकी संतान बनी। मां की केन्द्रीयता हटी और यह परिवार में भावनात्मक संबंधों की नई पुनर्रचना थी, जिसे इस उत्पाद ने संभव बनाया। 

भाषा और भूषा के साथ ही, यह भारतीय भोजन में नया उलटफेर था, जिसने पश्चिम के फास्ट-फूड को भारतीयों के बीच अब लगभग अपरिहार्य बना दिया है। भारत के, जो परम्परागत फास्ट फूड थे, वे धीरे-धीरे एक घामड़ और अ-खाद्य की श्रेणी में शामिल होने की कगार पर हैं। स्थिति यहां तक है कि शहर से लगे गांवों के निम्नवित्तीय परिवारों से भी वह बिदा होने के निकट है। 

अब अंत में हम उसके विज्ञापनकर्ता की सामाजिक जवाबदेही के प्रश्न पर आते हैं। बहरहाल, प्रश्न उठता है कि प्रश्नों का यह कटघरा इन्हीं नायकों के लिए क्यों हो? जब, एक विश्वसनीय अखबार में पाठक बिना नाम पते और जगह के यौनशक्ति में अभिवृध्दि के दावे के साथ तेल का विज्ञापन छपता देखता है तो क्या अखबार की 'संस्थागत विश्वसनीयता' का निवेश उस विज्ञापन में नहीं होता, जो उसकी बिक्री का आधार बनाता है? 

क्या मीडिया भी यह कहकर अपने हाथ झाड़ सकता है, कि वह तो 'अखबार-व्यवसाय की विवशता है। 'फैशन' और 'उपभोग' को समाज में, हस्तक्षेपकारी बनाने वाला तो स्वयं मीडिया ही है। जो जवाबदारी, मैगी नामक उत्पाद के विज्ञापन के संदर्भ में ब्राण्ड एम्बेसडर की है, वही एक अखबार और टेलिविजन चैनल की भी है। वे हाथ झाड़कर खड़े नहीं हो सकते क्योंकि विज्ञापन अंततः वस्तुओं की सूचना ही है। 

अतः जब प्रश्न नैतिकता से नाथे हुए हों तो वे सभी से अपने वाजिब उत्तर मांगेंगे ही। अब यह बात भी हमें विचलित करती ही है कि मॉरेलिटी को इस उत्तर-आधुनिक समय में एक फोबिया कहा जा रहा है। फोबिया एक किस्म की मानसिक रुग्णता का ही पर्याय है।
