'विश्वरूप 2' बनाने का विचार मैंने पहले से ही कर लिया था। जब मैं 'विश्वरूप 1' बना रहा था तो मुझे लगा कि अगर मैं जो सोच रहा हूं उसी को पूरा का पूरा पर्दे पर उतार दिया तो वो 3 घंटे और 40 मिनट की लंबी फिल्म बन जाएगी। तो क्यों न कहानी को 2 भागों में बताया जाए। सारियल में भी तो वैसे ही होता है ना! ये मेरी सोच तबसे पुख्ता हो गई थी जब मैं 7 साल पहले 'विश्वरूप 1' का शूट शुरू कर रहा था।' बेहद विवादों में रहने वाली फिल्म 'विश्वरूपम 1' की अगली कड़ी 'विश्वरूप 2' के प्रमोशन के सिलसिले में मुंबई आए कमल हासन के शांत व्यक्तित्व को देखकर आपके जेहन में एक के बाद एक उनकी बेहतरीन फिल्मों के सीन घूमने लगते हैं। उनके पास एक्टिंग के साथ साथ बातों का भी खजाना है।
रजनीकांत ने 'काला' बनाई और उसके जरिए संदेश दिया। क्या आपकी फिल्म भी संदेश दे रही है?
मुझे ऐसा लगता है कि 2 एक्टरों के काम को ऐसे तौला न जाए। मैं अपना काम कर रहा हूं और वे अपना। जैसे कोई बल्लेबाज हो और दो लोगों के खेलने का तरीका अलग ही रहेगा। वैसे भी मैं वे फिल्में बनाता हूं जिसका कोई रेलेवेंस हो। मेरी फिल्में हमेशा किसी न किसी तरह का संदेश देंगी। राजनीतिक बातों या हालात का मजाक बनाना या मजाक उड़ाना वो तो व्यंग्य हो गया। मैं उससे भी आगे निकल गया हूं। मैं अपनी फिल्म में वो बना-दिखा रहा हूं, जो एक जिम्मेदार नागरिक या एक कलाकार के तौर पर मैं किस तरह से बाकी के नागरिकों को झिंझोड़ सकता हूं। 'थेवर मगन' या 'हे राम' में भी मैंने ये ही किया था।
अब जब आप राजनीति में आ गए हैं, तो क्या फिल्में नहीं बनाएंगे?
एमएलए एमजीआर ने जब पार्टी जॉइन की थी, तब भी उन्होंने 12-14 फिल्में की थीं। लेकिन तब वे पार्टी प्रेसीडेंट नहीं थे। लेकिन जब वे पार्टी प्रेसीडेंट बने तब बहुत अलग बात हो गई थी। हो सकता है कि ये सब मेरे साथ भी हो। मैं अगर ऑफिस ले रहा हूं, काम कर रहा हूं, किसी पोजीशन को लेता हूं तो मेरा काम और जिम्मेदारी बहुत बढ़ जाएगी। वैसे भी अब बात फिल्मी बिजनेस की न होकर तमिलनाडु के बिजनेस की हो जाएगी। वैसे भी मैंने अपनी जिंदगी का बहुत बड़ा हिस्सा सिनेमा को दिया है। लगभग अभी तक की जिंदगी सिनेमा को दी है लेकिन अब जो करना है, वो उन लोगों के लिए काम करना है जिनकी वजह से मैं आज तक यहां पहुंचा हूं।

नफा ज्यादा है। वैसे भी जब एक ही शख्स यह सब कर रहा हो। फिल्म के बनते समय ये कोई नई बात थोड़े ही है। पहले चार्ली चैप्लीन ने किया था। फिर हमारे देश में सोहराब मोदीजी ने किया था। वे प्रोडक्शन, लेखन और निर्देशन के साथ-साथ एक्टिंग आदि सब करते थे। फिर आप गुरुदत्त साहब के बारे में क्या कहेंगे? वे तो एक्टिंग भी नहीं करना चाहते थे। वो तो दिलीप साहब की डेट उन्हें नहीं मिली, तो उन्हें फिल्म में एक्टिंग करना पड़ी। वैसे भी सब करने का मौका सबको नहीं मिलता है ना।
आपको आज के सिनेमा के बारे में क्या कहना है?
बहुत बदलाव आए हैं। नया खून हर तरफ दौड़ रहा है। नयापन है। हमारे समय से ज्यादा अच्छा समय ये है। हमारे समय में तो 2 तरीके के सिनेमा बना दिए गए थे- आर्ट और कमर्शियल। जब टिकट बिकने लगे तब सिनेमा कमर्शियल होता है लेकिन जब सिनेमा बन रहा होता है, तब वो आर्ट ही होता है। इन दोनों तरहों के सिनेमा में इतना अंतर ले आया गया था, जैसे छूआछूत हो गया हो या कोई जाति प्रथा आ गई हो। मैंने पिछले 40 साल के करियर में इसी बात को माना है कि सिनेमा, सिनेमा होता है कमर्शियल या आर्ट सिनेमा जैसा कुछ नहीं होता है!

सबसे सटीक संदेश तो यही है कि अगले ही साल चुनाव आ रहे हैं तो देख लीजिए किसे क्या भूमिका निभानी है? हम हमेशा अपने आपको राजनीति से दूर रखना पसंद करते हैं। हमने हमारी पॉलिटिक्स को टॉयलेट जैसा दर्जा दे रखा है। हम अपने कामों जैसे बस पकड़ना, क्रिकेट देखना इनसे ही मसरुफ रखते हैं और इस टॉयलेट की सफाई का जिम्मा हमने कई लोगों को दे रखा है, फिर सोचते हैं कि एक दिन नेता जैसा जंतु आएगा और कुछ करेगा।
हम क्यों नहीं समझते कि नेता हम ही तो हैं। हम ही हैं, जो नेता को चुनेंगे या एक दिन हम खुद नेता बन जाएंगे। जब देश आजाद हो रहा था तो सभी लोगों को लग रहा था कि वे भी नेता हैं। सबको लगा कि खून में गांधीजी का डीएनए है। नेताजी सिर्फ सुभाषचन्द्र बोस थोड़े ही थे। सब नेता थे। सत्याग्रह और इंडियन नेशनल आर्मी यूं ही थोड़े ही बनी। सबको लगा कि देश उनकी जिम्मेदारी है तभी तो नेताजी ने अपनी जिंदगी देश को दे दी। कभी समय हो तो आप दक्षिण में आना। आपको ऐसे लोगों से मैं मिलवाता हूं जिन्हें लगता है कि वे ही गांधीजी के असल वंशज हैं।
आप बताओ कि कितने राजगोपालाचारी हैं उत्तरप्रदेश में या कितने ईवीएस नंबूदिरीपाद हैं पंजाब में। आप मेरे प्रदेश में आएंगी तो बताऊंगा कि यहां श्याम रंग के नेताजी हैं। पटेल हैं, गांधी हैं, नेहरू हैं। आपको एक गहरे रंग वाला शख्स मिल जाएगा जिसका नाम सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल होगा और शायद उसने अपने पोते का नाम 'गांधी' रखा हो। ऐसा मेरे प्रदेश में वाकई में होता है।
आप सोच सकती हैं कि हम अलग ही होने की बात कर रहे हैं तो बताइए ऐसा कौन से राज्य ने नहीं चाहा है। लेकिन हमारे तमिलनाडु में अपने देशवासी होने की भावना कूट-कूटकर भरी है। मुझे हमेशा लगता है कि मैं गांधीजी का पड़पोता हूं। ये बात तो मैंने तुषार गांधी से भी कही थी। जब मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर आए थे तो मैंने अपना तार्रुफ कराया कि मैं गांधीजी का पड़पोता हूं, तो सभी की त्योरियां चढ़ गईं। तब मैंने पलटकर पूछा कि आप नहीं है क्या? तो सभी की तालियां बजने लगीं। अब एक हजार में दस मेरी बात न भी माने तो क्या फर्क पड़ गया।
'विश्वरूप 1' के समय में बहुत सारे विवाद हुए थे?
आपको विवादों के पीछे की पूरी कहानी को समझना होगा। अपने घर में डीटीएच लगाना क्या गलत है। आपके आसपास एक माफिया काम कर रहा होता है, जो नहीं चाहता कि मनोरंजन आपके घर में पहुंचे, वो भी नए रूप में। कैसे डीटीएच लाना इतना गलत हो सकता है कि फिल्म को ही बैन कर दिया जाए। उस समय सरकार में कुछ लोग थे, जो मल्टीप्लेक्सेस में इन्वेस्ट करना चाह रहे थे, तो उनके लिए तो डीटीएच गलत चीज हो गई ना। फिल्म के सोच को चुनौती देने का कानूनी तरीका भी था लेकिन बजाए उसके उन्होंने फिल्म को ही सजा देना शुरू कर दिया और उसे बैन कर दिया। इसके लिए उन्होंने एक वर्ग विशेष (कम्युनिटी) को साथ में लेकर उनकी भावनाओं का इस्तेमाल किया, जो कि बहुत ही भद्दा, क्रूर राजनीतिक कदम था। उस समय देश को इसकी गंभीरता समझ में नहीं आई। इसमें कुछ हाथ तब के राजनेताओं और उद्योगपतियों का भी है। लेकिन बताओ डीटीएच क्या आज की सच्चाई नहीं है?
आपका कितना नुकसान हुआ था?
मेरा 60 करोड़ का नुकसान हुआ। वो तो मैं अभिनेता हूं, तो बताने के लिए सामने बैठा हूं। सोचिए कोई निर्माता क्या करता? उस विवाद में मुझे तोड़कर रख दिया था। हालांकि उन लोगों को लगा कि वे मुझे खा जाएंगे लेकिन क्या करूं। मैं तो गांधीजी का पड़पोता हूं न, तो मैं वापस उठ खड़ा हो गया।
