पहले चरण की 71 सीटों पर हो रहे चुनाव में मुख्यमंत्री नीतीश कुमार की जदयू 71 में से 35 सीटों पर चुनाव लड़ रही जबकि उसकी सहयोगी भाजपा 29 सीटों पर चुनावी समर में है। विपक्षी राजद 42 सीटों पर और कांग्रेस 20 सीटों पर चुनाव लड़ रही है। चिराग पासवान की लोक जनशक्ति पार्टी 41 सीटों पर चुनाव लड़ रही है जिसमें से 35 सीटें वैसी हैं जहां से जदयू चुनाव लड़ रही है।

चुनाव लड़ने वाले उम्मीदवारों में 952 पुरुष और 114 महिलाएं हैं। निर्वाचन आयोग के मुताबिक पहले चरण में 2.14 करोड़ मतदाता अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग करेंगे। इसमें से 1.01 करोड़ महिलाएं हैं और 599 तृतीय लिंगी हैं। गया शहर सीट पर सबसे अधिक 27 उम्मीदवार मैदान में हैं जबकि बांका जिले की कटोरिया सीट पर सबसे कम 5 उम्मीदवार हैं।

कोविड-19 के बीच हो रहे चुनाव के मद्देनजर निर्वाचन आयोग ने सुरक्षित मतदान के लिए दिशा-निर्देश जारी किए हैं। दिशा-निर्देशों के तहत एक मतदान केंद्र में मतदाताओं की संख्या 1600 से घटाकर 1000 कर दी गई है। 80 वर्ष से अधिक उम्र के लोगों के लिए पोस्टल बैलेट की सुविधा उपलब्ध कराई गई है।
