इंसान सदियों से करेंसी यानी मुद्रा का इस्तेमाल ख़रीद-फ़रोख़्त और कारोबार के लिए करता आया है। एक दौर था जब महंगे रत्नों में कारोबार हुआ करता था। लोग मोती, कौड़ियां और दूसरे रत्न देकर चीज़ें ख़रीदा करते थे। फिर सिक्कों का चलन शुरू हुआ। सोने-चांदी, तांबे, कांसे और अल्यूमिनियम के सिक्के तमाम साम्राज्यों और सभ्यताओं में ढाले गए।

जब एक भिश्ती बना हिंदुस्तान का सुल्तान

जब मुग़ल बादशाह हुमायूं की जान भिश्ती (एक पानी पिलाने वाले ने) बचाई, तो हुमायूं ने उसे एक दिन का बादशाह बना दिया। तब भिश्ती ने हिंदुस्तान में चमड़े के सिक्के चलवा दिए थे। सिक्कों के साथ ही नोटों का चलन भी शुरू हुआ। सबसे पहले चीन में करेंसी नोट छापे गए थे। लेकिन, औद्योगिक क्रांति के बाद यूरोप की औपनिवेशिक ताक़तों ने करेंसी नोटों के चलन को ख़ूब बढ़ावा दिया।

पर, क्या कभी आप ने करेंसी के रूप में बड़े-बड़े पत्थरों के इस्तेमाल की बात सुनी है?

नहीं न!

तो, चलिए आज आप को ऐसी जगह की सैर पर ले चलते हैं, जहां की करेंसी पत्थर है। और सदियों से ऐसा होता आ रहा है। इसके लिए आप को प्रशांत महासागर के माइक्रोनेशिया इलाक़े में जाना पड़ेगा। यहां पर बहुत छोटे-छोटे जज़ीरे आबाद हैं। इन्हीं में से एक द्वीप है यप। ये छोटी सी जगह है, जहां कुल मिलाकर 11 हज़ार लोग रहते हैं। मगर इसकी शोहरत ऐसी है कि 11वीं सदी में मिस्र के एक राजा के हवाले से यप का ज़िक्र मिलता है।

इसी तरह मशहूर यूरोपीय यात्री मार्को पोलो ने तेरहवीं सदी में लिखी अपनी एक क़िताब में इसका ज़िक्र किया है। इन दोनों ही मिसालों में कहीं भी यप का नाम नही लिखा है। मगर दोनों साहित्यों में एक ऐसी जगह का ज़िक्र है, जहां की करेंसी पत्थर हुआ करती थी। जब आप यप पहुंचेंगे, तो आपका सामना घने जंगलों, दलदले बाग़ों और बेहद पुराने दौर के हालात से होगा।

दिन भर में सिर्फ़ एक फ्लाइट है, जो यप के छोटे से हवाई अड्डे पर उतरती है। हवाई अड्डे से बाहर निकलते ही आप को क़तार से लगे छोटे-बड़े ढले हुए पत्थर दिखेंगे। इनके बीच में छेद होता है, ताकि इन्हें कहीं लाने- ले जाने में सहूलत हो। पूरे यप द्वीप पर ऐसे छोटे-बड़े पत्थर जहां-तहां पड़े दिख जाते हैं।

यप द्वीप की मिट्टी दलदली है। यहां चट्टानें नहीं हैं। फिर भी पत्थर की इस करेंसी का चलन यहां सदियों से है। किसी को नहीं पता कि इसकी शुरुआत कब हुई थी। लेकिन, स्थानीय लोग बताते हैं कि आज से सैकड़ों साल पहले यप के बाशिंदे डोंगियों में बैठकर चार सौ किलोमीटर दूर स्थित पलाऊ द्वीप जाया करते थे।

वहां से वो चट्टानें काटकर ये पत्थर तराशा करते थे। फिर इन्हें नावों में लाद कर यहां यप लाया जाता था। इन्हें राई कहा जाता है। पिछली कई सदियों से इन पत्थरों को करेंसी के तौर पर इस्तेमाल किया जाता रहा है। पहले यप के आदिवासी इन पत्थरों को बड़े बेढंगे तरीक़े से काटकर यहां लाते थे।

कैसे होता था इस करेंसी में व्यापार

फिर हथियारों के विकास से पत्थरों को सुघड़ तरीक़े से ढालकर यहां लाया जाने लगा। उन्नीसवीं सदी में जब यप पर स्पेन का क़ब्ज़ा हो गया, तब भी यहां पर पत्थरों से कारोबार थमा नहीं। जब पलाऊ जाने वाले नाविक अपने साथ ढले हुए पत्थर लाते थे, तो वो इन्हें यप के बड़े सरदारों को सौंप देते थे। फिर वो सरदार इन पत्थरों को अपना या अपने परिवार के किसी सदस्य का नाम देकर लाने वाले को सौंप देते थे।

पांच में से दो पत्थर ये सरदार ख़ुद रखते थे और तीन पत्थर लाने वाले को दे दिए जाते थे। शुरुआत में पत्थरों की क़ीमत सीपियों की संख्या से तय होती थी क्योंकि पत्थरों से पहले सीपी को करेंसी के तौर पर इस्तेमाल किया जाता था। जैसे एक पत्थर के बदले पचास सीपी दी जाती थीं। आज फुटकर करेंसी के तौर पर यप में अमेरिकी डॉलर का इस्तेमाल होता है।

लेकिन, इन पत्थरों की यप समाज में अपनी अहमियत बरकरार है। आज हर पत्थर का इतिहास है। उससे जुड़ा कोई न कोई क़िस्सा है। किसी भी परिवार के पास ये करेंसी होना बहुत सम्मान की बात मानी जाती है। आज इन पत्थरों की करेंसी का इस्तेमाल रोज़ाना के लेन-देन में नहीं होता। बल्कि समाज में इसे कभी माफ़ीनामे और कभी शादी-संबंध को मज़बूत करने के लिए दिया जाता है।

पत्थर के इन सिक्कों का आकार 7 सेंटीमीटर से लेकर 3.6 मीटर तक होता है। इन सिक्कों का मोल इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि वो किस काम में इस्तेमाल होता है और किसको दिया जाता है। कबीले के सरदार, आने वाली नस्लों को पत्थर के हर सिक्के का इतिहास बताते हैं।

इस तरह से पिछले 200 सालो से पत्थर की इन करेंसी का इतिहास आने वाली नस्लों को जबानी याद कराया जा रहा है। अब पत्थर के इन सिक्कों को एक म्यूज़ियम में रखा गया है। जहां टूटे-फूटे पत्थर की इन करेंसी का भी इतिहास दर्ज किया गया है। ये किस गांव के हैं, इनका किस परिवार से नाता है।

अब भी कुछ नए पत्थर के सिक्के ढाले जा रहे हैं। मगर अब इनकी तादाद बहुत कम हो गई है। दिलचस्प बात ये है कि इन बहुमूल्य सिक्कों को चुराए जाने का डर नहीं है। जैसा कि नोटों या सिक्कों के साथ हो सकता है। ये इतने बड़े हैं और सब को इनके बारे में मालूम है, तो कोई इन्हें चुराकर ले भी कहां जा सकता है। आज पत्थर की ये करेंसी पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी विरासत के तौर पर नई नस्ल को सौंपी जा रही है।
