बॉलीवुड स्टार श्रीदेवी की शनिवार को दुबई में मौत हो गई और उसके बाद से भारतीय मीडिया ने करोड़ों दर्शकों की इस चहेती अभिनेत्री को अपने-अपने तरीक़े से याद भी किया। लेकिन जैसे-जैसे समय बीतता गया, श्रीदेवी की मौत को लेकर मीडिया में तरह-तरह का ताना-बाना बुना जाने लगा।
कई न्यूज़ चैनलों में श्रीदेवी की मौत की कथित वजहों पर स्पेशल शो चलाए गए। श्रीदेवी की मौत को लेकर इस तरह की सनसनीखेज़ रिपोर्टिंग पर कई लोगों ने सोशल मीडिया पर अपना गुस्सा उतारा।
सोमवार को दुबई पुलिस की एक रिपोर्ट में कहा गया था कि श्रीदेवी की मौत बाथटब में 'दुर्घटनावश डूबने' से हुई। कुछ न्यूज़ चैनल ने 'बाथटब का सेट' लगाकर अपना विशेष शो दिखाया तो कुछ ने एक कदम आगे जाकर 'टब में तैरती हुई श्रीदेवी' को दिखाया।
एक अन्य टीवी चैनल ने 'टब के बगल में बोनी कपूर' को खड़ा कर दिया। 'न्यूज़ की मौत' हैशटैग के साथ कई वरिष्ठ पत्रकारों और लोगों ने ऐसी 'सेंसेशनल रिपोर्टिंग' की आलोचना की। वरिष्ठ पत्रकार और न्यूज़़लॉन्ड्री की एडिटर इन चीफ़ मधु त्रेहन भी इस तरह की सनसनीखेज़ रिपोर्टिंग को सही नहीं मानतीं।
उन्होंने कहा, "दो दिन से भारतीय मीडिया में जो चल रहा है वो पत्रकारिता नहीं है। पत्रकारिता तो तथ्यों पर होती है। यहां तो पूरी कवरेज ही अटकलों पर हो रही है। किसी को पूरी बात नहीं पता। मीडिया श्रीदेवी के फ़ेस लिफ़्ट और डाइट पिल पर बात कर रहा है। पत्रकारों को अपनी इज़्ज़त बनाकर रखनी चाहिए।"
वरिष्ठ पत्रकार और इंडियन एक्सप्रेस की कॉलमनिस्ट शुभ्रा गुप्ता की राय भी उनसे जुदा नहीं है। शुभ्रा कहती हैं, "मान लिया कि किसी सेलेब्रिटी की अचानक मौत के बाद उनके बारे में जानने की जिज्ञासा होती है लेकिन फ़िलहाल जो चल रहा है उसे दर्शकों की जिज्ञासा का शोषण करना कह सकते हैं। ज़्यादातर टीवी चैनल्स ने निजता और मर्यादा को ताक पर रख दिया है। इन लोगों से पूछना चाहिए कि अगर उनके अपने परिवार की किसी महिला के बारे में ऐसी बातें की जातीं तो उन्हें कैसा लगता।"
यह पूछे जाने पर कि क्या श्रीदेवी का महिला होना एक वजह हो सकता है? शुभ्रा कहती हैं, "बिल्कुल। ये कोई पहली बार नहीं है जब ऐसा हो रहा है। प्रिंसेस डायना की मौत के समय भी मीडिया ने उनकी निजी ज़िंदगी की धज्जियां उड़ा दी थीं। वो आख़िरी समय में किसके साथ थीं, क्या कर रही थीं, हर चीज़ पर लिखा गया था। श्रीदेवी एक एक्टर थीं। उनके काम के बारे में बात करो। मौत से जुड़े तथ्य भी बताओ। लेकिन किसी के आख़िरी 15 मिनट से आपको क्या मतलब है? क्या ज़रूरत है इतना जानने की?"

मीडिया तो इन अटकलों का भी इश्यू बना रहा है कि श्रीदेवी के ख़ून में शराब के अंश मिले।
शुभ्रा ग़ुस्से से कहती हैं, "2018 चल रहा है। ऐसे में हम एक औरत के शराब पीने पर भी हैरानी जताएं तो हमें सोचना चाहिए कि क्या हम सौ साल पीछे जाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। मान लिया कि अति हर चीज़ की ख़तरनाक है। लेकिन कोई महिला या पुरूष शराब पीता है या नहीं, ये उनका निजी मामला है। मीडिया ऐसी बातें करके क्या साबित करना चाहता है।"
क्या इसके लिए दर्शक भी कुछ हद तक ज़िम्मेदार हैं?
मधु त्रेहन कहती हैं। "अगर हम कचरा कंज़्यूम कर रहे हैं तो हमें कचरा ही मिलेगा। अगर इन चैनल को ये दिखाकर भी टीआरपी मिलती रहे तो इन्हें लगेगा कि लोग यही देखना चाहते हैं। लोग चैनल बदलकर वोट क्यों नहीं करते कि हमें यह पसंद नहीं?"
वरिष्ठ पत्रकार राजदीप सरदेसाई ने ट्विटर पर लिखा, "यह पहली बार नहीं है जब भारतीय न्यूज़ चैनल, बग़ैर किसी असल जानकारी के, फ़ोरेंसिक एक्सपर्ट, डॉक्टर और जासूस बने बैठे हैं। ना हम लोगों को शांति से जीने देते हैं, ना मरने।"
बरखा दत्त ने तो न्यूज़ की मौत के नाम से एक हैशटैग भी चलाया है। वे ट्विटर पर लिखती हैं, "श्रीदेवी की मौत पर ख़बरों में चल रहे घिनौने हैशटैग का जवाब सिर्फ़ इस हैशटैग से दिया जा सकता है #NewsKiMaut. बाथटब को छोड़ो, इस तरीक़े की गंदगी को निकालने के लिए तो ड्रेन पाइप चाहिए। मुझे शर्म आ रही है कि मैं भी इस इंडस्ट्री का हिस्सा हूं। लेकिन इस बात का संतोष भी है कि मैं इस माहौल में टीवी पर एंकरिंग नहीं कर रही हूं।"
वीर सांघवी ने लिखा, "किसी की मौत के समय भारतीय टीवी चैनलों और गिद्धों में क्या फ़र्क रह जाता है? कुछ काम ऐसे हैं जिन्हें करने में गिद्धों को भी शर्म आ जाए, लेकिन हमारे टीवी चैनल्स को नहीं आती...
लेकिन क्या इस आलोचना का टीवी न्यूज़ चैनलों पर कोई फ़र्क पड़ा? वे इस बारे में क्या सोचते हैं? यह पूछने पर आज तक के मैनेजिंग एडिटर सुप्रिय प्रसाद ने कहा कि "मान लीजिए ये ख़बर आती है कि श्रीदेवी की बाथटब में डूबकर मौत हो गई तो क्या आपके मन में ये देखने की उत्सुकता नहीं होगी कि बाथटब कैसा होता है, उसमें डूबकर कोई कैसे मर सकता है? हमारे बहुत से दर्शक ग्रामीण इलाक़ों के हैं, वो नहीं जानते बाथटब कैसा होता है। इसमें दिक्कत क्या है?"
उन्होंने कहा कि जिन लोगों को टेलीविज़न की समझ नहीं है, वही इस पर सवाल खड़े कर रहे हैं। सुप्रिय प्रसाद ने कहा कि टेलीविज़न का कवरेज़ उतना ही हो रहा है, जितना किसी बड़ी ख़बर का होना चाहिए।
