अपनी हत्या से कुछ ही पहले अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति जॉन एफ़ कैनेडी ने कहा था कि अगर कोई अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति को मारना चाहता है तो ये कोई बड़ी बात नहीं होगी बशर्ते हत्यारा ये तय कर ले कि मुझे मारने के बदले वो अपना जीवन देने के लिए तैयार है। "अगर ऐसा हो जाता है तो दुनिया की कोई भी ताक़त मुझे बचा नहीं सकती।"
21 मई, 1991 की रात दस बज कर 21 मिनट पर तमिलनाडु के श्रीपेरंबदूर में ऐसा ही हुआ। तीस साल की एक नाटी, काली और गठीली लड़की चंदन का एक हार ले कर भारत के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गाँधी की तरफ़ बढ़ी। जैसे ही वो उनके पैर छूने के लिए झुकी, कानों को बहरा कर देने वाला धमाका हुआ।
उस समय मंच पर राजीव के सम्मान में एक गीत गाया जा रहा था... राजीव का जीवन हमारा जीवन है..अगर वो जीवन इंदिरा गांधी के बेटे को समर्पित नहीं है... तो वो जीवन कहाँ का?... वहाँ से मुश्किल से दस गज़ की दूरी पर गल्फ़ न्यूज़ की संवाददाता और इस समय डेक्कन क्रॉनिकल, बेंगलुरु की स्थानीय संपादक नीना गोपाल, राजीव गांधी के सहयोगी सुमन दुबे से बात कर रही थीं।
"मेरी आंखों के सामने बम फटा"
नीना याद करती हैं, "मुझे सुमन से बातें करते हुए दो मिनट भी नहीं हुए थे कि मेरी आंखों के सामने बम फटा। मैं आमतौर पर सफ़ेद कपड़े नहीं पहनती। उस दिन जल्दी-जल्दी में एक सफ़ेद साड़ी पहन ली। बम फटते ही मैंने अपनी साड़ी की तरफ़ देखा। वो पूरी तरह से काली हो गई थी और उस पर मांस के टुकड़े और ख़ून के छींटे पड़े हुए थे। ये एक चमत्कार था कि मैं बच गई। मेरे आगे खड़े सभी लोग उस धमाके में मारे गए थे।"
नीना बताती हैं, "बम के धमाके से पहले पट-पट-पट की पटाखे जैसी आवाज़ सुनाई दी थी। फिर एक बड़ा सा हूश हुआ और ज़ोर के धमाके के साथ बम फटा। जब मैं आगे बढ़ीं तो मैंने देखा लोगों के कपड़ो में आग लगी हुई थी, लोग चीख रहे थे और चारों तरफ़ भगदड़ मची हुई थी। हमें पता नहीं था कि राजीव गांधी जीवित हैं या नहीं।"
श्रीपेरंबदूर में उस भयंकर धमाके के समय तमिलनाडु कांग्रेस के तीनों चोटी के नेता जी के मूपनार, जयंती नटराजन और राममूर्ति मौजूद थे। जब धुआँ छटा तो राजीव गाँधी की तलाश शुरू हुई। उनके शरीर का एक हिस्सा औंधे मुंह पड़ा हुआ था। उनका कपाल फट चुका था और उसमें से उनका मगज़ निकल कर उनके सुरक्षा अधिकारी पीके गुप्ता के पैरों पर गिरा हुआ था जो स्वयं अपनी अंतिम घड़ियाँ गिन रहे थे।

धमाके के बाद का मंजर
बाद में जी के मूपनार ने एक जगह लिखा, "जैसे ही धमाका हुआ लोग दौड़ने लगे। मेरे सामने क्षत-विक्षत शव पड़े हुए थे। राजीव के सुरक्षा अधिकारी प्रदीप गुप्ता अभी ज़िंदा थे। उन्होंने मेरी तरफ़ देखा। कुछ बुदबुदाए और मेरे सामने ही दम तोड़ दिया मानो वो राजीव गाँधी को किसी के हवाले कर जाना चाह रहे हों। मैंने उनका सिर उठाना चाहा लेकिन मेरे हाथ में सिर्फ़ मांस के लोथड़े और ख़ून ही आया। मैंने तौलिए से उन्हें ढक दिया।"
मूपनार से थोड़ी ही दूरी पर जयंती नटराजन अवाक खड़ी थीं।
बाद में उन्होंने भी एक इंटरव्यू में बताया, "सारे पुलिस वाले मौक़े से भाग खड़े हुए। मैं शवों को देख रही थी, इस उम्मीद के साथ कि मुझे राजीव न दिखाई दें। पहले मेरी नज़र प्रदीप गुप्ता पर पड़ी... उनके घुटने के पास ज़मीन की तरफ मुंह किए हुए एक सिर पड़ा हुआ था.. मेरे मुंह से निकला ओह माई गॉड.. दिस लुक्स लाइक राजीव।"
वहीं खड़ी नीना गोपाल आगे बढ़ती चली गईं, जहाँ कुछ मिनटों पहले राजीव खड़े हुए थे। नीना बताती है, "मैं जितना भी आगे जा सकती थी, गई। तभी मुझे राजीव गाँधी का शरीर दिखाई दिया। मैंने उनका लोटो जूता देखा और हाथ देखा जिस पर गुच्ची की घड़ी बँधी हुई थी। थोड़ी देर पहले मैं कार की पिछली सीट पर बैठकर उनका इंटरव्यू कर रही थी। राजीव आगे की सीट पर बैठे हुए थे और उनकी कलाई में बंधी घड़ी बार-बार मेरी आंखों के सामने आ रही थी।
दस बज कर पच्चीस मिनट पर 10 जनपथ में...
इतने में राजीव गांधी का ड्राइवर मुझसे आकर बोला कि कार में बैठिए और तुरंत यहाँ से भागिए। मैंने जब कहा कि मैं यहीं रुकूँगी तो उसने कहा कि यहाँ बहुत गड़बड़ होने वाली है। हम निकले और उस एंबुलेंस के पीछे पीछे अस्पताल गए जहाँ राजीव के शव को ले जाया जा रहा था।"
दस बज कर पच्चीस मिनट पर दिल्ली में राजीव के निवास 10, जनपथ पर सन्नाटा छाया था। राजीव के निजी सचिव विंसेंट जॉर्ज अपने चाणक्यपुरी वाले निवास की तरफ़ निकल चुके थे। जैसे ही वो घर में दाख़िल हुए, उन्हें फ़ोन की घंटी सुनाई दी। दूसरे छोर पर उनके एक परिचित ने बताया कि चेन्नई में राजीव से जुड़ी बहुत दुखद घटना हुई है।
जॉर्ज वापस 10 जनपथ भागे। तब तक सोनिया और प्रियंका भी अपने शयन कक्ष में जा चुके थे। तभी उनके पास भी ये पूछते हुए फ़ोन आया कि सब कुछ ठीक तो है। सोनिया ने इंटरकॉम पर जॉर्ज को तलब किया। जॉर्ज उस समय चेन्नई में पी चिदंबरम की पत्नी नलिनी से बात कर रहे थे। सोनिया ने कहा जब तक वो बात पूरी नहीं कर लेते वो लाइन को होल्ड करेंगीं।
नलिनी ने इस बात की पुष्टि की कि राजीव को निशाना बनाते हुए एक धमाका हुआ है लेकिन जॉर्ज सोनिया को ये ख़बर देने की हिम्मत नहीं जुटा पाए। दस बज कर पचास मिनट पर एक बार फिर टेलीफ़ोन की घंटी बजी।

जब सोनिया गांधी को ख़बर मिली..
रशीद किदवई सोनिया की जीवनी में लिखते हैं, "फ़ोन चेन्नई से था और इस बार फ़ोन करने वाला हर हालत में जॉर्ज या मैडम से बात करना चाहता था। उसने कहा कि वो ख़ुफ़िया विभाग से है। हैरान परेशान जॉर्ज ने पूछा राजीव कैसे हैं? दूसरी तरफ़ से पाँच सेकेंड तक शांति रही, लेकिन जॉर्ज को लगा कि ये समय कभी ख़त्म ही नहीं होगा। वो भर्राई हुई आवाज़ में चिल्लाए तुम बताते क्यों नहीं कि राजीव कैसे हैं? फ़ोन करने वाले ने कहा, सर वो अब इस दुनिया में नहीं हैं और इसके बाद लाइन डेड हो गई।"
जॉर्ज घर के अंदर की तरफ़ मैडम, मैडम चिल्लाते हुए भागे। सोनिया अपने नाइट गाउन में फ़ौरन बाहर आईं। उन्हें आभास हो गया कि कुछ अनहोनी हुई है। आम तौर पर शांत रहने वाले जॉर्ज ने इस तरह की हरकत पहले कभी नहीं की थी। जॉर्ज ने काँपती हुई आवाज़ में कहा "मैडम चेन्नई में एक बम हमला हुआ है।"
सोनिया ने उनकी आँखों में देखते हुए छूटते ही पूछा, "इज़ ही अलाइव?" जॉर्ज की चुप्पी ने सोनिया को सब कुछ बता दिया। रशीद बताते हैं, "इसके बाद सोनिया पर बदहवासी का दौरा पड़ा और 10 जनपथ की दीवारों ने पहली बार सोनिया को चीख़ कर विलाप करते सुना। वो इतनी ज़ोर से रो रही थीं कि बाहर के गेस्ट रूम में धीरे-धीरे इकट्ठे हो रहे कांग्रेस नेताओं को वो आवाज़ साफ़ सुनाई दे रही थी। वहाँ सबसे पहले पहुंचने वालों में राज्यसभा सांसद मीम अफ़ज़ल थे।
हत्या में एलटीटीई का हाथ
उन्होंने मुझे बताया कि सोनिया के रोने का स्वर बाहर सुनाई दे रहा था। उसी समय सोनिया को अस्थमा का ज़बरदस्त अटैक पड़ा और वो क़रीब-क़रीब बेहोश हो गईं। प्रियंका उनकी दवा ढ़ूँढ़ रही थीं लेकिन वो उन्हें नहीं मिली। वो सोनिया को दिलासा देनी की कोशिश भी कर रही थीं लेकिन सोनिया पर उसका कोई असर नहीं पड़ रहा था।"
इस केस की जाँच के लिए सीआरपीएफ़ के आईजी डॉक्टर डीआर कार्तिकेयन के नेतृत्व में एक विशेष जाँच दल का गठन किया। कुछ ही महीनो में इस हत्या के आरोप में एलटीटीई को सात सदस्यों को गिरफ़्तार किया गया। मुख्य अभियुक्त शिवरासन और उसके साथियों ने गिरफ़्तार होने से पहले साइनाइड खा लिया।
एक साल के भीतर चार्जशीट दाख़िल कर दी गई
डॉक्टर कार्तिकेयन ने बीबीसी से बात करते हुए कहा, "आप कह सकते हैं हमारी पहली सफलता थी हरि बाबू के कैमरे से उन दस तस्वीरों का मिलना। हमने आम लोगों से सूचनाएं लेने के लिए अख़बारों में विज्ञापन दिया और एक टॉल फ़्री नंबर भी दिया। हमारे पास कुल तीन चार हज़ार टेलीफ़ोन कॉल आए। हर एक कॉल को गंभीरता से लिया गया। हमने चारों तरफ़ छापे मारने शुरू किए और जल्द ही हमें सफलता मिलनी शुरू हो गई।"
"पहले दिन से ही मैं इस काम में 24 घंटे, हफ़्ते के सातों दिन बिना किसी आराम के लगा रहा। मैं रोज़ रात के दो बजे काम के बाद कुछ घंटों की नींद लेने के लिए गेस्ट हाउस पहुंचता था। सारी जाँच तीन महीने में पूरी हो गई लेकिन फॉरेंसिक रिपोर्ट्स आने में समय लगा लेकिन हत्या की पहली वर्षगाँठ से पहले हमने अदालत में चार्जशीट दाख़िल कर दी थी।"
कुछ दिनों बाद सोनिया गांधी ने इच्छा प्रकट की कि वो नीना गोपाल से मिलना चाहती हैं।
जब सोनिया गांधी ने की नीना गोपाल से मुलाक़ात
नीना गोपाल ने बताया, "भारतीय दूतावास के लोगों ने दुबई में फ़ोन कर मुझे कहा कि सोनिया जी मुझसे मिलना चाहती हैं। जून के पहले हफ्ते में मैं वहां गई। हम दोनों के लिए बेहद मुश्किल मुलाक़ात थी वो। वो बार-बार एक बात ही पूछ रहीं थी कि अंतिम पलों में राजीव का मूड का कैसा था, उनके अंतिम शब्द क्या थे।"
नीना ने कहा, "मैंने उन्हें बताया कि वह अच्छे मूड में थे, चुनाव में जीत के प्रति उत्साहित थे। वो लगातार रो रही थीं और मेरा हाथ पकड़े हुए थीं। मुझे बाद में पता चला कि उन्होंने जयंती नटराजन से पूछा था कि गल्फ़ न्यूज़ की वो लड़की मीना (नीना की जगह) कहां हैं, जयंती मेरी तरफ आने के लिए मुड़ी थीं, तभी धमाका हुआ।"
राजीव के वो शब्द सही साबित हुए
इंदिरा गांधी के प्रधान सचिव रहे पीसी एलेक्ज़ेंडर ने अपनी किताब 'माई डेज़ विद इंदिरा गांधी' में लिखा है कि इंदिरा गांधी की हत्या के कुछ घंटों के भीतर उन्होंने ऑल इंडिया इंस्टीट्यूट के गलियारे में सोनिया और राजीव को लड़ते हुए देखा था। राजीव सोनिया को बता रहे थे कि पार्टी चाहती है कि 'मैं प्रधानमंत्री पद की शपथ लूँ'। सोनिया ने कहा हरगिज़ नहीं। 'वो तुम्हें भी मार डालेंगे'। राजीव का जवाब था, 'मेरे पास कोई विकल्प नहीं है। मैं वैसे भी मारा जाऊँगा।'
सात वर्ष बाद राजीव के बोले वो शब्द सही सिद्ध हुए थे।
