ह्यूग मिल्ल शुरुआती दिनों में ही 'सेक्स गुरु' कहे जाने वाले भगवान श्री रजनीश के चेले बन गए थे, लेकिन प्यार और दया पर आधारित समाज का उनका सपना ताश के पत्तों की तरह बिखर गया। ऑनलाइन प्लेटफ़ॉर्म नेटफ़्लिक्स ने हाल ही में ओशो पर 'वाइल्ड वाइल्ड काउंट्री' टाइटल से एक डॉक्युमेंट्री सिरीज़ बनाई है।
सिरीज़ में रजनीश के आश्रम का भारत से अमेरिका शिफ़्ट होना दिखाया गया है। अमेरिका के ओरेगन प्रांत में 64,000 एकड़ ज़मीन पर रजनीश के हज़ारों समर्थकों ने एक आश्रम बसाया था। फिर वहां पांच सालों तक आश्रम के लोगों के साथ तनाव, क़ानूनी विवाद, क़त्ल की कोशिश के मामले, चुनावी धोखाधड़ी, हथियारों की तस्करी, ज़हर देने के आरोप जैसी चीज़ें सामने आती रहीं। ज़हर देने वाला मामला तो अमेरिका के इतिहास का सबसे बड़ा 'बायो-टेरर' अटैक माना जाता है।
बॉडीगार्ड की ज़िम्मेदारी
एडिनबरा के रहने वाले ह्यूग मिल ने 90 रॉल्स रॉयस कारों के लिए मशहूर रहे रजनीश के साथ दशकों गुजारे थे। इस अरसे में रजनीश ने ह्यूग को प्रेरित किया, उसकी गर्लफ़्रेंड सल साथ सोये और उन्हें कठिन श्रम में लगा दिया।
सालों तक ह्यूग मिल ने भगवान रजनीश के बॉडीगार्ड के तौर पर काम किया। इस रोल में ह्यूग का काम ये देखना था कि शिष्य ओशो को छू न पाएं। ह्यूग जिस दौरान रजनीश के साथ थे, वो उनके आश्रम के विस्तार का समय था। रजनीश के समर्थकों की संख्या इस बीच 20 से 20 हज़ार हो गई थी।
ह्यूग कहते हैं, "वे 20 हज़ार केवल मैगज़ीन ख़रीदने वाले लोग नहीं थे। ये वो लोग थे जिन्होंने रजनीश के लिए अपना घर-परिवार छोड़ा था।" "ये लोग हफ़्ते में बिना कोई मजदूरी लिए 60 से 80 घंटे काम कर रहे थे और डॉर्मेट्री में रह रहे थे। रजनीश के लिए उनका समर्पण इस हद तक था।"
रजनीश के प्रवचन
ह्यूग अब 70 साल के हो गए हैं। उनका जन्म स्कॉटलैंड के लैनार्क में हुआ था और परवरिश एडिनबरा में हुई। साल 1973 में ऑस्टियोपैथ (मांसपेशियों और हड्डियों से संबंधित मेडिकल साइंस) की अपनी ट्रेनिंग पूरी करके ह्यूग भारत चले गए। उस समय वे 25 साल के थे।
रजनीश के प्रवचन ऑडियो कैसेट्स पर सुनकर ह्यूग प्रभावित हुए थे। वो बताते हैं, "जब आप ऐसे किसी प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति से मिलते हैं तो उसका आपके अस्तित्व पर गहरा असर पड़ता है। हालांकि ह्यूग स्वामी शिवमूर्ति का नाम सुनकर भारत गए थे।

'ईश्वर जो नाकाम हो गया'
ह्यूग बताते हैं, "मुझे लगा कि वे कितने अद्भुत, समझदार, दयालु, प्यारे और चैतन्यशील शख़्स थे। मैं उनके चरणों में बैठना चाहता था, उनसे सीखना चाहता था।" ह्यूग ने भगवान रजनीश के बारे में 'द गॉड दैट फ़ेल्ड' टाइटल से एक किताब प्रकाशित की है।
हिंदी में इस किताब के नाम का अनुवाद कुछ इस तरह से किया जा सकता है, 'ईश्वर जो नाकाम हो गया।' वो बताते हैं, मैंने उन्हें एक बेहद जागृत व्यक्ति के रूप में देखा जिसमें असाधारण ज्ञान और बोध का भाव था।
भारत में ज़िंदगी
रजनीश की 1990 में मौत हो गई थी। मरने के कुछ साल पहले उन्होंने 'ओशो' नाम अपना लिया था। ह्यूग मिल बताते हैं कि ओशो एक ऐसे 'बहुरूपिए' की तरह थे जो लोगों की ज़रूरतों के मुताबिक़ ख़ुद को पेश कर सकते थे। हालांकि ह्यूग का कहना है कि 'आमने-सामने की मुलाक़ातों' में रजनीश 'पूरी तरह से मन की बात भांप कर आगे के बारे में बता' देते थे।
आमने-सामने की इन मुलाक़ातों को रजनीश के आश्रम में 'दर्शन' कहा जाता था। उन दिनों ह्यूग को भारत में ज़िंदगी रास नहीं आ रही थी और वे परेशान चल रहे थे। शुरुआती 18 महीनों में रजनीश ह्यूग की गर्लफ़्रेंड के साथ सोने लगे और फिर उन्हें भारत की सबसे गर्म जगहों में से एक में खेतों में काम करने के लिए भेज दिया।
रजनीश से ईर्ष्या
ह्यूग की उम्र उन दिनों 40 से कुछ ऊपर हो रही थी। वो बताते हैं कि रजनीश सुबह के चार बजे अपनी महिला शिष्यों को 'विशेष दर्शन' दिया करते थे। "रजनीश को कुछ हद तक 'सेक्स गुरु' इसलिए कहा जाता था क्योंकि वे अपने सार्वजनिक प्रवचनों में सेक्स और ऑर्गेज़म का अक्सर ज़िक्र करते थे।"
"ये बात सबको मालूम थी कि वे अपनी महिला शिष्यों के साथ सोते थे।" ह्यूग ये भी मानते हैं कि उन्हें रजनीश से ईर्ष्या होने लगी थी और वे इस वजह से आश्रम छोड़ने के बारे में भी सोचने लगे थे। लेकिन फिर उनके भीतर से आवाज़ आई कि ये कहीं न कहीं अच्छे के लिए ही हो रहा होगा।
रजनीश की हिफ़ाजत
ह्यूग कहते हैं, "मैं जानता था कि वो सेक्स गुरु हैं। हम सभी को सेक्स की आज़ादी थी। एक ही पार्टनर के साथ रहने वाले वहां कम ही लोग थे। 1973 में ये अलग बात थी। उन्होंने बताया कि रजनीश के विशेष दर्शन के बाद अपनी गर्लफ़्रेंड के साथ उनका रिश्ता एक नए मुकाम में पहुंचा लेकिन ये ज़्यादा दिनों तक बरकरार नहीं रह पाया।

क्योंकि रजनीश ने उन्हें अपनी गर्लफ़्रेंड से 400 मील दूर भेज दिया था। जब ह्यूग वापस लौटे तो वे रजनीश की निजी सचिव मां योग लक्ष्मी के बॉडी गार्ड बन गए। दर्शन का मौक़ा नहीं मिलने पर एक शिष्या ने मां योग लक्ष्मी पर हमला कर दिया था जिसके बाद लक्ष्मी ने उन्हें बॉडीगार्ड का काम करने के लिए कहा। ह्यूग से भगवान रजनीश की हिफ़ाजत के लिए भी कहा गया था।
ओशो का इनर सर्किल
कहा जाता है कि रजनीश इस बात के पक्ष में नहीं थे कि शिष्यों को उन तक पहुंचने से रोका जाए। लेकिन ह्यूग का कहना था कि जब लोग उन्हें छूने या उनके क़दम चूमने को आतुर हों तो गुरु को खड़े नहीं रहना चाहिए। ह्यूग बताते हैं, "भगवान को ये पसंद नहीं आया।" लेकिन अगले सात सालों तक ह्यूग भगवान के इर्द-गिर्द रहने वाले प्रभावशाली संन्यासियों में शामिल थे।
ओशो के इनर सर्किल में एक नाम मां आनंद शीला का भी था। नेटफ़्लिक्स की डॉक्युमेंट्री में मां आनंद शीला का भी तवज्जो के साथ ज़िक्र किया गया है। शीला एक भारतीय थीं, लेकिन उनकी पढ़ाई-लिखाई न्यू जर्सी में हुई थी। ओशो से जुड़ने से पहले शीला ने एक अमेरिकी से शादी की थी।
आश्रम की कैंटीन में...
ह्यूग बताते हैं कि वे भगवान की सुरक्षा के साथ आश्रम की कैंटीन चलाने में शीला की मदद भी कर रहे थे। कैंटीन का काम बढ़ रहा था, क्योंकि आश्रम आने वाले भक्तों की संख्या लगातार बढ़ रही थी। ह्यूग बताते हैं कि उनका और शीला का तकरीबन एक महीने तक ज़बर्दस्त अफेयर चला। ये बात उनके पति तक पहुंची और पति ने रजनीश से इसे बंद कराने के लिए कहा।
इस घटना के बाद शीला का बर्ताव ह्यूग के लिए बदल गया और उनके लिए मुश्किलें खड़ी होने लगीं। आश्रम में शीला का कद कुछ इस रफ़्तार से बढ़ा कि वे जल्द ही लक्ष्मी की जगह रजनीश की निजी सचिव बन गईं।
रजनीश को लेकर विवाद
ओशो के आश्रम को भारत से ओरेगन ले जाने के फ़ैसले के पीछे जिन लोगों की बड़ी भूमिका थी, उनमें शीला का नाम प्रमुख था। भारत में रजनीश को लेकर विवाद शुरू हो गया था और वे चाहते थे कि उनका आश्रम किसी शांत जगह पर हो ताकि हज़ारों शिष्यों के साथ एक नया समुदाय बसाया जा सके।
शीला ने 1981 में ओरेगन में दलदली ज़मीन का प्लॉट ख़रीदा था। उन्हें स्थानीय क़ानूनों की कम ही जानकारी थी। लेकिन वे चाहते थे कि संन्यासी यहां काम करें और रजनीश की मान्यताओं के हिसाब से एक नया शहर बसाएं। ह्यूग कहते हैं, मुझे लगता है कि ओरेगन जाने का फ़ैसला एक ग़लती था। ये एक ख़राब चुनाव था।
ओरेगन में विवाद
ह्यूग बताते हैं कि ओरेगन आश्रम शुरू से ही स्थानीय क़ानूनों के ख़िलाफ़ जा रहा था। "लेकिन इसके बावजूद शीला और उनके क़रीबी लोगों ने वो तमाम चीज़ें कीं जो उनकी योजनाओं के हिसाब से था।"
"इसमें स्थानीय लोगों को परेशान करने से लेकर उकसाने तक की ग़लती की गई। यहां तक कि सरकारी अधिकारियों के क़त्ल की साज़िश तक रची गई।" "एक लोकल रेस्तरां में संन्यासियों ने खाने में ज़हर मिलाने की कोशिश की और इससे 750 लोग बीमार पड़ गए। इसका मक़सद एक चुनाव को प्रभावित करना था।"
रजनीश के शिष्य ये दावा करते हैं कि उन्हें स्थानीय अधिकारियों ने परेशान किया और वे कंजर्वेटिव प्रशासन की नाराज़गी का शिकार बने।
आश्रम की गतिविधियां
लेकिन ह्यूग का कहना है कि आश्रम के लोगों ने ये मुश्किलें अपने लिए ख़ुद ही पैदा की थीं, क्योंकि उन्होंने वहां के क़ानूनों की कभी परवाह नहीं की। ह्यूग का कहना है कि अप्रैल, 1982 के आते-आते उन्हें आश्रम की गतिविधियों पर शक होने लगा था।
ओरेगन आश्रम के हेल्थ सेंटर में ऑस्टियोपैथ की हैसियत से काम करने वाले ह्यूग कहते हैं, अब ये आश्रम प्यार, दयालुता और ध्यान करने की जगह नहीं रह गई थी। जो संन्यासी इस आश्रम को खड़ा करने के लिए हफ़्ते में 80 से 100 घंटे काम कर रहे थे वे बीमार होने लगे। ह्यूग बताते हैं कि शीला ने इन बीमार संन्यासियों के इलाज के लिए जो निर्देश दिया था, वो बेहद 'अमानवीय' था।
ह्यूग का अनुभव
ह्यूग बताते हैं, "शीला ने कहा कि इन संन्यासियों को एक इंजेक्शन देकर काम पर वापस भेज दो।" एक दूसरे मौक़े पर ह्यूग के एक दोस्त नौका दुर्घटना का शिकार हो गए थे, लेकिन उन्हें अपने दोस्त को देखने जाने से रोक दिया गया और काम पर लौटने के लिए कहा गया।
वो कहते हैं, "मुझे लगा कि हम राक्षस में बदलते जा रहे हैं। मैंने ख़ुद से पूछा कि मैं अब भी यहां क्यों हूं।" ह्यूग ने नवंबर, 1982 में आश्रम छोड़ दिया। उन्होंने कहा, "कुछ वक़्त के लिए मुझे लगा कि मैं ख़ाली हो गया हूं। मैं बहुत कन्फ्यूज्ड था। मैं हालात संभाल नहीं पा रहा था।" ज़िंदगी फिर पटरी पर लाने से पहले ह्यूग को एक हॉस्पिटल में छह हफ़्ते रहकर अपनी काउंसिलींग करानी पड़ी थी।
'वाइल्ड वाइल्ड काउंट्री' डॉक्युमेंट्री
ह्यूग ने एडिनबरा में कुछ समय तक ऑस्टियोपैथ के तौर पर काम किया फिर वे लंदन, म्यूनिख और वहां से कैलिफोर्निया चले गए। साल 1985 से ही ह्यूग कैलिफोर्निया में रह रहे हैं।
ह्यूग का कहना है कि 'वाइल्ड वाइल्ड काउंट्री' डॉक्युमेंट्री सिरीज़ में जो चीज़ें दिखाई गईं हैं वो उनके ओरेगन छोड़ने के बाद की हैं। शीला की गतिविधियों के बारे में ह्यूग के पास पूरी जानकारी नहीं है। लेकिन क्या शीला जो कर रही थीं, उसके बारे में ओशो को सबकुछ मालूम था?
ह्यूग जवाब देते हैं, "मुझे इसमें कोई शक नहीं है...ओशो को सबकुछ मालूम था।"
