अमेरिकी स्पेस एजेंसी के अभियान 'न्यू हराइज़न्स' ने सौरमंडल के बाहरी हिस्से में स्थित अल्टिमा टूली नाम के पिंड के क़रीब से कामयाबी से गुज़रने के बाद पृथ्वी से संपर्क किया है। जिस समय इस स्पेसक्राफ़्ट से संपर्क हुआ, उस समय वह पृथ्वी से 6.5 अरब किलोमीटर की दूरी पर था।
इस तरह से यह सौरमंडल में सबसे दूर चलाया जाने वाला सफल अभियान बन गया है। न्यू हराइज़न्स नाम के रोबॉटिक स्पेसक्राफ़्ट ने अल्टिमा टूली के पास से गुज़रते हुए इस पिंड की काफ़ी तस्वीरें और अहम जानकारियां नोट की हैं।
ये अंतरिक्ष यान तस्वीरें और जानकारियां आने वाले कुछ महीनों तक पृथ्वी पर भेजता रहेगा। अंतरिक्ष यान से भेजे गए रेडियो संदेश स्पेन के मैड्रिड में लगे नासा के बड़े ऐंटेना में पकड़े गये। इन संदेशों को पृथ्वी और अल्टिमा के बीच लंबी दूरी को तय करने में छह घंटे और आठ मिनट का समय लगा।
सिग्नल रिसीव होते ही मैरीलैंड स्थित जॉन्स हॉपकिन्स यूनिवर्सिटी की एप्लाइड फ़िज़िक्स लैबरेटरी में उत्साह में तालियां बजाकर जश्न मनाया गया। मिशन के ऑपरेशंस मैनेजर ऐलिस बोमैन ने कहा, "हमारा एयरक्राफ़्ट सुरक्षित है। हमने सबसे दूर फ़्लाइबाइ करने में सफलता हासिल की है।" फ़्लाइबाइ का अर्थ है किसी स्थान या बिंदू के पास से होकर गुज़रना।
क्या है संदेश में
स्पेसक्राफ़्ट से आए पहले रेडियो मेसेज में उसकी स्थिति के बारे में सिर्फ़ इंजिनियरिंग से जुड़ी जानकारी थी। इसमें इस बात की पुष्टि भी शामिल थी कि न्यू हराइज़न्स ने तस्वीरें खींच ली हैं और इसकी मेमरी पूरी तरह भर चुकी है। बाद में न्यू हराइज़न्स और तस्वीरें भी भेजेगा जिससे वैज्ञानिकों और लोगों को पता चलेगा कि स्पेसक्राफ़्ट ने अपने कैमरे में क्या-क्या दर्ज किया है।
मगर ग़ौर करने वाली बात यह है कि तस्वीरें खींचते समय स्पेसक्राफ़्ट किस स्थिति में था, यह बात बेहद महत्वपूर्ण है। अगर उसकी स्थिति सही नहीं रही होगी तो उसने ख़ाली अंतरिक्ष की ही तस्वीरें कैद कर ली होंगी।
अल्टिमा सौर मंडल के उस हिस्से में स्थित है जिसे काइपर बेल्ट कहते हैं। यह बेल्ट जमे हुए पिंडों से बनी है जो नेपच्यून से 2 अरब किलोमीटर और प्लूटो से 1.5 अरब किलोमीटर की दूरी पर हैं। ये पिंड सूरज की परिक्रमा करते रहते हैं। साल 2015 में न्यू हराइज़न्स प्लूटो के पास से भी गुज़रा था।
अंदाज़ा लगाया जाता है कि काइपर बेल्ट में अल्टिमा जैसे हज़ारों पिंड हैं और वे ऐसी स्थिति में हैं जिससे यह पता चल सकता है कि आज से 4।6 अरब साल पहले कैसे हालात रहे होंगे, जब सौर मंडल का निर्माण हुआ था। न्यू हराइज़न्स और पृथ्वी के बीच दूरी बहुत लंबी है। स्पेसक्राफ़्ट में छोटा सा 15 वॉट का ट्रांसमिटर लगा हुआ है। इसका मतलब यह है कि डेटा बहुत धीमी रफ़्तार से आएगा।

हालांकि यह 1 किलोबिट प्रति सेकंड की रफ़्तार से आ सकता है। ऐसे में इस स्पेसक्राफ़्ट ने जितनी भी तस्वीरें आदि स्टोर की हैं, उन्हें पृथ्वी पर रिसीव करने का काम सितंबर 2020 तक पूरा होने की उम्मीद है।
इसका मतलब यह है कि फ़रवरी से पहले हाई रेज़लूशन वाली तस्वीर मिलने की उम्मीद नहीं की जा सकती। लेकिन इस अभियान के प्रिंसिपल इन्वेस्टिगेटर एलन स्टर्न कहते हैं कि इससे कोई ख़ास मुश्किल नहीं होगी। उन्होंने पत्रकारों से कहा, "इस हफ़्ते जो कम रेज़लूशन वाली तस्वीरें आएंगी, उससे अल्टिमा के भूगोल और उसके ढांचे के बारे में बुनियादी जानकारियां मिल जाएंगी। इस तरह हम अगले हफ़्ते से पहला साइंटिफ़िक पेपर लिखना शुरू कर देंगे।"
जब यह स्पेसक्राफ़्ट अल्टिमा के पास से गुज़रने की प्रक्रिया में था, उसने एक तस्वीर ली थी। इसमें अल्टिमा धुंधला सा नज़र आता है। शोधकर्ताओं का कहना है कि इस तस्वीर से पता चलता है कि इस पिंड का आकार 35 x 15 किलोमीटर हो सकता है।
काइपर बेल्ट की जांच क्यों है अहम
अल्टिमा टूली को लेकर और जहां पर यह स्थित है, उस जगह को लेकर वैज्ञानिकों में काफ़ी जिज्ञासा है। एक तो इसलिए कि इस हिस्से में सूरज की बहुत कम किरणें पहुंचती हैं और यहां तापमान बहुत कम है। इस कारण यहां पर रासायनिक प्रक्रिया लगभग न के बराबर हुई होगी। इसका मतलब है कि अल्टिमा तब से जमी हुई अवस्था में है, जब से इसका निर्माण हुआ है।
दूसरी बात यह है कि अल्टिमा का आकार छोटा है (मात्र 30 किलोमीटर), ऐसे में इसकी बनावट में शुरू से लेकर अब तक अपने आप ज़्यादा बदलाव नहीं हुआ होगा। तीसरी महत्वपूर्ण बात है इसका काइपर बेल्ट में मौजूद होना। सोलर सिस्टम के आंतरिक हिस्से में पिंडों के आपस में टकराने की कई घटनाएं हुई हैं मगर काइपर बेल्ट में अपेक्षाकृत कम टक्करें हुई हैं।
