पूर्वोत्तर भारत के नगालैंड राज्य में मंगलवार को चुनाव हुए और उसके परिणाम भी आ चुके हैं। बीबीसी की टीम इस राज्य में गई और वहां के लोगों से पूछा कि उनके लिए भारतीय होने का अर्थ क्या है, क्योंकि इस क्षेत्र के लोगों की यह शिकायतें रहती हैं कि शेष भारत की उनके लिए रुढ़िबद्ध धारणा रहती है और उनके साथ भेदभाव होता है।

मैंने भारत के कई हिस्सों में सालों तक काम किया है। जब लोगों को पता चलता था कि मैं नगालैंड से हूं तो वे पूछते थे, "ओह! तुम कुत्ता खाती हो, सांप खाती हो। इसके बाद वे कहते थे यह तो बहुत 'बर्बर' है। वे पूछते थे, "तुम सुअर कैसे खा सकती हो? वह बहुत घिनौने होते हैं!"
मैंने इस चीज़ से कभी इनकार नहीं किया कि हम सुअर का मांस खाते हैं। सुअर का मांस स्वादिष्ट होता है! मुझे एहसास हुआ कि यह केवल अज्ञानता की वजह से था जो वे इस तरह से हमें आंकते थे। इसलिए मैंने उन्हें हमारी ज़िंदगी और संस्कृति के बारे में बताना शुरू किया। और वैसे मैं कुत्ता नहीं खाती हूं। मैं उन्हें खाने से ज़्यादा उनसे प्यार करती हूं।
कुछ लोग दूसरों की संस्कृति के बारे में दिलचस्पी रखते हैं, वे प्रयोग करने के लिए तैयार रहते हैं। कुछ भारतीय पूर्वोत्तर भी घूमने आते हैं और इस क्षेत्र की छानबीन करते हैं। वे हमारे आतिथ्य की प्रशंसा करते हैं।
मैंने अपने बारे में ऐसा कभी नहीं सोचा कि मैं भारतीय नहीं हूं। नगालैंड भारत के नक्शे पर है। हां, मैं नगा हूं, लेकिन इसका अर्थ यह नहीं है कि मैं भारतीय नहीं हूं या भारत के किसी हिस्से में रहने वाले नागरिक से कम भारतीय हूं।
मुझे यह कहने से नफ़रत है, लेकिन मैं कहना चाहती हूं कि पूर्वोत्तर भारत के लोगों को भारत के दूसरे हिस्सों में भेदभाव का सामना करना पड़ता है।
कार्यस्थल पर भी हमारे साथ भेदभाव होता है। मैंने राजधानी दिल्ली में काम किया है और मैंने महसूस किया है कि जो लोग मुझसे कम काबिल थे और जिन्होंने काम में अच्छा प्रदर्शन नहीं किया था, मेरी जगह उन्हें प्रमोशन दे दिया गया। लेकिन मैंने इस चीज़ में विश्वास रखा कि मैं जो हूं वो हूं और आख़िरकार मुझे मेरे काम के लिए इनाम मिला।

मैं कोलकाता के पूर्वी इलाके में आठ साल तक रहा और मैंने कभी भी किसी भेदभाव का सामना नहीं किया। लोग इस बात को महसूस करते थे कि मैं कुछ मामलों में उनसे अलग हूं और वे भी कुछ मामलों में मुझसे अलग हैं।

मुझे देश के बाकी हिस्सों में कभी भी अलग महसूस नहीं हुआ। लेकिन मुझे तब दुख होता है जब मैं पूर्वोत्तर भारत के लोगों के साथ भेदभाव की कहानियां सुनता हूं। तब मैं ख़ुद को थोड़ा अलग महसूस करता हूं। बेंगलुरु और मुंबई जैसे शहरों में मेरे बहुत से दोस्त हैं और हम अक्सर एक-दूसरे से मिलते रहते हैं।
भारत के अलग हिस्सों में जो हमें भेदभाव का सामना करना पड़ता है वह समझ की कमी के कारण है। हम अलग दिखते हैं। अधिकतर लोग नगालैंड या इसकी संस्कृति के बारे में नहीं समझते हैं। स्कूल की किताबें भी देश के इस हिस्से के बारे में कुछ नहीं बताती हैं।

मैं मिर्च, संतरे, फलियां और केले बेचती हूं। मैं अपनी ज़िंदगी से ख़ुश हूं। मेरी 100 साल की उम्र पूरे होने में सिर्फ़ 20 साल बचे हैं। आप जब भी कभी नगालैंड आएंगे, आप मुझे इसी जगह पाएंगे। मैं नगालैंड के बाहर कभी नहीं गई। वास्तव में मैं अपने गांव फ़ोमचिंग के बाहर कभी नहीं गई। मेरे गांव में हर कोई अनपढ़ है।
मैं यहां इसलिए रहती हूं क्योंकि मैं यहां ख़ुश हूं। मैं यहां से बाहर नहीं जाना चाहती हूं। मैं भारत के बारे में कुछ भी नहीं जानती हूं। मैं सिर्फ़ नगा लोगों को जानती हूं। भारतीय होने का क्या मतलब है, मैं इसके बारे में ज़्यादा नहीं सोचती हूं। मैं अपने साधारण जीवन से ख़ुश हूं।

मैं भारत के बारे में कुछ भी नहीं जानता हूं। मेरे परिवार का कोई भी शख़्स नगालैंड के बाहर नहीं गया। मैं अपने बच्चों को नगालैंड के बाहर नहीं भेजना चाहता हूं क्योंकि मैं चाहता हूं कि जब मैं मरूं तो वे यहां रहें। वे शहर के बाहर गए तो वे वक़्त पर नहीं लौट पाएंगे।

यह टैटू मैंने दशकों पहले एक जीत के तौर पर बनवाया था जब मेरी जनजाति ने युद्ध जीता था। मेरा एक सुखी जीवन रहा है। मैं खाता हूं, पीता हूं, संगीत सुनता हूं, गाता हूं और जवानी के दिनों में मैं महिलाओं के सपने देखा करता था।
