डांस करने वाला या माइकल जैक्सन को पसंद करने वाला कौन-सा व्यक्ति ऐसा होगा जिसने उनके जाने माने डांस स्टेप की नकल करने की कोशिश नहीं की होगी? लेकिन 1987 में जारी म्यूज़िक वीडियो "स्मूथ क्रिमिनल" में माइकल जैक्सन ने जो डांस स्टेप किया था वो करना किसी के लिए आसान कतई नहीं है।
इस स्टेप में माइकल जैक्सन सीधे खड़े रहते हैं और वो इसी मुद्रा में अपने शरीर को 45 डिग्री के कोण में आगे की तरफ झुकाते हैं। वैज्ञानिक हमेशा से इस बात की चर्चा करते रहे हैं कि माइकल जैक्सन ऐसा कैसे कर पाते थे? दरअसल न्यूरोसर्जनों की एक टीम ने जैक्सन के इस डांस स्टेप का अध्ययन किया है। उनका कहना है कि उनके डांस का राज़ उनके जूतों में था जो उनके पैरों को ज़रूरी ताकत देता था।
जर्नल ऑफ़ न्यूरोसर्जरी में प्रकाशित अपने शोध में मंजुल त्रिपाठी और चंडीगढ़ के ग्रैजुएट इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ़ एजुकेशन एंड मेडिकल रिसर्च के उनके साथी कहते हैं कि, "कई अच्छे डांसर, जिनके पैर काफी मज़बूत होते हैं वो भी इस स्टेप को करते वक्त केवल 25 या फिर अधिकतम 30 डिग्री के कोण में ही झुक सकते हैं। लेकिन माइकल जैक्सन इस स्टेप में 45 डिग्री का कोण आसानी से बना लेते थे।"
किसी ने उनकी नकल करने की कोशिश भी की तो उन्होंने महसूस किया होगा कि ऐसे करते वक्त टांगों से पिछले हिस्सों की मांसपेशियों पर अधिक दवाब पड़ता है लेकिन रीढ़ की हड्डी़ पर उतना दवाब नहीं पड़ता। मंजुल त्रिपाठी कहते हैं कि इस कारण माइकल जैक्सन की सबसे बेहतर नकल करने वाले के लिए आगे की तरफ ठीक उनकी तरह झुकना लगभग नामुमकिन है।

लेकिन जैक्सन के लिए ऐसा करना आसान था क्योंकि उनके लिए इस कारनामे को अंजाम देने के लिए ख़ास जूते थे। उनके जूतों में वी-आकार का एक टुकड़ा लगा होता था जो ज़मीन से निकली एक कील पर ठीक से फिट हो जाता था। इस कारण जैक्सन सामने की तरफ आसानी से झुक पाते थे। लेकिन इससे पहले उन्हें ऐसा करने के लिए कमर पर बांधने वाली सुरक्षा रस्सियों की ज़रूरत होती थी।
माना जाता है कि माइकल जैक्सन और हॉलीवुड में काम कर चुके उनके दो साथी अमेरिकी अंतरिक्षयात्रियों के लिए बनाए गए ख़ास जूतों से प्रेरित थे। ये जूते किसी भी सतह पर आसानी से चिपक जाते थे और शून्य गुरुत्वाकर्षण की स्थिति में भी व्यक्ति को सतह पर ही रखने में मदद करते थे। हालांकि जानकार मानते हैं कि ऐसे जूतों के साथ भी शरीर को एक कोण पर कुछ देर के लिए रखना आसान काम नहीं है क्योंकि इसके लिए आपको अपनी टांगों, रीढ़ की हड्डी और मांसपेशियों की मज़बूती की ज़रूरत होती है।
मंजुल त्रिपाठी कहते हैं, "माइकल जैक्सन के कई फैन और खुद हमने भी उनके इस स्टेप की नकल करने की कई बार कोशिश की है लेकिन हर बार हम गिर पड़े।" "ये करना आसान नहीं। आपकी टांगों के साथ-साथ आपकी कमर की मांसपेशियां भी इसका दवाब झेलने के लिए तैयार होनी चाहिए।"
