लाइटहाउस सदियों से जहाजों को बंदरगाह तक पहुंचने का रास्ता दिखाते रहे हैं। पहले पहाड़ियों के ऊपर आग जलाकर समुद्री जहाजों को संकेत दिया जाता था कि वे तट के करीब पहुंचने वाले हैं। बाद में कोयले और तेल के लैंपों ने उनकी जगह ले ली। लैंपों की रोशनी बढ़ाने के लिए आईने लगाए जाते थे ताकि दूर समुद्र से ही वह दिखाई पड़े।
लेकिन अंधेरी और तूफानी रातों में लैंप की रोशनी कारगर नहीं थी, इसलिए तटों पर नौकाओं के टूटे हुए पतवार और पाल बिखरे मिलते थे, क्योंकि उनके नाविक समय रहते तट को नहीं देख पाते थे।
नई खोज
1820 के दशक में यह सब बदल गया जब एक फ्रांसीसी भौतिक विज्ञानी ऑगस्टिन फ़्रेस्नेल ने नए तरह के लेंस का आविष्कार किया। उन्होंने क्रिस्टलीय प्रिज्म के रिंग को गुंबद की आकार में व्यवस्थित किया जो अपरावर्तित प्रकाश को भी परावर्तित कर सकती थी।
फ़्रेस्नेल ने इस लेंस को फ्रांस के कॉर्डोन लाइटहाउस पर लगाया। यह लाइटहाउस बॉर्डेक्स से करीब 100 किलोमीटर उत्तर गिरोन्डे मुहाने पर बना है। फ़्रेस्नेल लेंस लगाने के बाद लाइटहाउस का लैंप कई समुद्री मील दूर से ही नाविकों को रास्ता दिखाने लगा।
फ्रांस का सबसे पुराना और चालू लाइटहाउस खुले समुद्र में बना दुनिया का पहला लाइटहाउस है। सफेद पत्थरों से बनी इसकी इमारत पुनर्जागरण काल की अद्भुत कृति है, जिसमें कैथेड्रल, किला और शाही निवास हैं। इसे "समुद्र का वर्साय" भी कहा जाता है और यह इतिहास और समुद्री इंजीनियरिंग का स्मारक है।
समुद्र का वर्साय
फ्रांस के संस्कृति मंत्रालय ने 1862 में इसे ऐतिहासिक स्मारक घोषित किया था। उसी साल पेरिस के नॉट्र डाम को भी स्मारक घोषित किया गया था। कॉर्डोन लाइटहाउस तक केवल नाव से पहुंचा जा सकता है। सीढ़ियां इस के ऊपर तक ले जाती हैं, जहां से पर्यटकों को फ्रांस की विरासत के बारे में अद्भुत जानकारियां मिलती हैं।
मेडॉक अटलांटिक दक्षिण-पश्चिमी फ्रांस का समृद्ध इलाका है जो अंगूर के बगानों, वाइन और महलों के लिए मशहूर है। कुछ ही सैलानी बॉर्डेक्स के उत्तर में सेंट पेलैस-सुर-मेर शहर पहुंचते हैं। इस उंघते हुए शहर में कॉर्डोन लाइटहाउस की फिक्र कम ही लोगों को है।
समुद्र तट पर बने कैफे ताज़ी मछलियां और न्यूटेला क्रेप्स बनाते हैं, जो स्थानीय लोगों की पसंद हैं। कई लोग नाव से सेंट जैक्स के चक्कर लगाते हैं और देवदार के जंगलों में घूमते हैं।
दिन में एक बार एक कटमरैन (बड़ी नाव) पोर्ट रॉयन से सवारियों को लेकर लाइटहाउस की तरफ जाती है। शहर जब धीरे-धीरे ओझल होने लगता है तो लाइटहाउस दिखने लगता है। कई लोग अब भी हैरान रह जाते हैं कि बीच समुद्र में ऐसा शानदार शो-पीस क्यों बनाया गया।
बेजोड़ वास्तुशिल्प
वास्तव में कॉर्डोन लाइटहाउस का बेजोड़ वास्तुशिल्प एक लंबे और उथल-पुथल भरे इतिहास का परिणाम है। कहा जाता है कि यहां के एक छोटे टापू पर 9वीं सदी की शुरुआत से ही एक छोटी प्रकाश व्यवस्था मौजूद थी, जब शारलेमेन (चार्ल्स महान) ने यहां रोशनी करने का आदेश दिया था।
ब्लैक प्रिंस (एडवर्ड ऑफ़ वेल्स) ने 1360 में यहां टावर बनवाया था। दो सौ साल बाद 1584 में किंग हेनरी तृतीय ने गिरोन्डे के मुहाने पर लाइटहाउस बनवाया। हेनरी तृतीय अपने शाही रुतबे के अनुरूप शानदार टावर चाहते थे, जो एडवर्ड के बनाए टावर के खंडहर की जगह ले सके।
उन्होंने पेरिस के मशहूर वास्तुकार लुई डी फ्वां को लाइटहाउस के साथ-साथ शाही निवास, रखवालों के क्वार्टर, एक बड़ा लैंप और चैपल बनाने के आदेश दिए। धार्मिक लड़ाइयों और कई तरह के वित्तीय और तकनीकी चुनौतियों के कारण निर्माण कार्य धीमा रहा, लेकिन लुई डी फ्वां अपने काम में लगे रहे। हेनरी तृतीय के निधन के बाद भी काम चलता रहा।
1611 में अटलांटिक और गिरोन्डे के संगम की ओर जाने वाले नाविकों ने पहली बार 67.5 मीटर ऊंचे शानदार लाइटहाउस को देखा। हवादार झरोखों के बीच से होते हुए 300 से ज्यादा सीढ़ियां चढ़कर ऊपर पहुंचा जा सकता था। जहाजों के कप्तान शायद इसके सबसे ऊपरी गैलरी डेक पर चढ़ने से पहले चैपल नॉट्र डाम डी कॉर्डोन में अपने जहाजों की सुरक्षित यात्रा के लिए प्रार्थना करते होंगे।

लाइटहाउस का ईंधन
लाइटहाउस को पहली बार पहली बार 1611 में जलाया गया था। तब ईंधन के लिए टार, पिच और लकड़ी का इस्तेमाल किया गया। 1640 के दशक के मध्य में एक तूफान से कॉर्डोन की प्रकाश-व्यवस्था ध्वस्त हो गई। तब यहां व्हेल की चर्बी के तेल से जलने वाले लालटेन लगाए गए और उसे धातु के बेसिन के ऊपर रखा गया।
इससे लालटेन की लौ पर नियंत्रण बढ़ा लेकिन इससे कम रोशनी आती थी। 18वीं सदी में व्हेल के तेल की जगह कोयले का प्रयोग शुरू किया गया, लेकिन इसकी रोशनी को बनाए रखना मुश्किल था। रखवालों को बार-बार ईंधन लेकर ऊपर जाना पड़ता था और भट्टी में कोयला झोंकना पड़ता था।
1782 में तेल के लालटेन और तांबे के रिफ्लेक्टर लगाए गए जिससे रखवालों को बार-बार ऊपर नहीं जाना पड़ता था। 18वीं सदी के अंत में घड़ी बनाने वाले कारीगरों ने घड़ी की प्रणाली का ही इस्तेमाल करके घूमने वाला लाइट बना दिया। इस तरह यह दुनिया का पहला घूमने वाला लाइटहाउस बन गया।
शांत मौसम में तेल से जलने वाले लैंप नाविकों की पर्याप्त मदद करते थे, लेकिन उनकी रोशनी इतनी तेज़ नहीं थी कि तूफानी रातों में भी नाविकों की मदद कर सकें।
राजशाही के प्रतीक
1789 की फ्रांसीसी क्रांति के बाद फ्रांस की पुरानी सामंती व्यवस्था के हर प्रतीक को मिटाने की कोशिश हुई। कॉर्डोन के अंदर बनी शाही मूर्तियों और राजशाही को समर्पित शिलालेखों को भी मिटा दिया गया।
शिल्पकार लुई डी फ्वां की मूर्ति को छोड़ दिया गया। यह भारी भरकम मूर्ति प्रवेश द्वार के पास आज भी देखी जा सकती है। पुराने प्रतीकों को मिटाने के साथ-साथ इस लाइटहाउस की उपयोगिता सुधारने और इसकी रोशनी को दूर तक पहुंचाने के लिए बड़े पैमाने पर काम शुरू किए गए।
शानदार खोज
19वीं सदी में ऑप्टिक्स (प्रकाशिकी) एक उभरता हुआ क्षेत्र था। डच भौतिक विज्ञानी क्रिश्चियन हाइगेन्स ने प्रकाश का सिद्धांत दिया था, जिसके मुताबिक प्रकाश तरंगों के रूप में चलता है। वैज्ञानिक इस सिद्धांत से परिचित थे, लेकिन कई लोगों को संदेह भी था। ऑगस्टिन फ़्रेस्नेल ने हाइगेन्स के सिद्धांत को प्रभावी तरीके से साबित किया।
फ्रांसीसी वैज्ञानिक ने पता लगाया कि छोटे-छोटे उत्तल (convex) प्रिज्मों को मधुमक्खी के छत्ते के आकार में जोड़कर वह प्रकाश की तिरछी किरणों को सही दिशा में मोड़ सकते हैं। फ़्रेस्नेल की व्यवस्था ज्यामितीय प्रकाशिकी के एक प्रमुख सिद्धांत पर आधारित थी। इसके मुताबिक जब प्रकाश की किरण एक माध्यम से दूसरे माध्यम में प्रवेश करती है (जैसे हवा से कांच में और फिर कांच से हवा में) तो इसकी दिशा बदल जाती है।
फ़्रेस्नेल लेंस की संकेंद्रित व्यवस्था और प्रकाश के "दिशा परिवर्तन" ने लाइटहाउस की रोशनी को उसके स्रोत से भी बहुत तीव्र बना दिया। इसकी चमक को अब बहुत दूर से भी देखा जा सकता था। फ़्रेस्नेल ने इस व्यवस्था को कॉर्डोन लाइटहाउस पर लगाया, जो फ्रांस में पहले से ही बहुत महत्वपूर्ण था।
कॉर्डोन के पास का क्षेत्र आड़े-तिरछे समुद्र तट और (नाविकों को) धोखा देने वाले चट्टानी उभार के लिए जाना जाता है। 1860 के दशक तक छोटे बंदरगाहों से लेकर बड़े समुद्री लाइटहाउस तक हजारों जगह फ़्रेस्नेल लेंस लगा दिए गए।
कॉर्डोन के रखवाले
कॉर्डोन लाइटहाउस के चार संरक्षक हैं, लेकिन एक साथ दो संरक्षक ही ड्यूटी पर होते हैं। हर पखवाड़े उनकी ड्यूटी बदल जाती है। इन्हीं संरक्षकों में से एक मिकेल नेवू कहते हैं, "हर लाइटहाउस की अपनी विशेषता होती है।"
कॉर्डोन लाइटहाउस की रोशनी जलती-बुझती रहती है। फ़्रेस्नेल लेंस की ओर इशारा करते हुए नेवू कहते हैं, "हर 12 सेकेंड में यहां की रोशनी 3 बार जलती है।" कॉर्डोन का लेंस घूमने से इसका पैनल संक्रेदित रोशनी का बीम बनाता है जो कई मील दूर नाविकों तक पहुंचता है।
दक्षिण दिशा में लाल रंग की रोशनी जाती है, पश्चिम में हरे या सफेद रंग की रोशनी पहुंचती है। रोशनी का रंग समुद्री ट्रैफिक को जहाज के आकार के मुताबिक नियंत्रित करता है- हरा रंग मुहाने के मुख्य मार्ग की ओर संकेत करता है, जिसमें भारी व्यावसायिक जहाज चलते हैं।
दक्षिणी मार्ग का संकेत लाल रोशनी से मिलता है। इस मार्ग पर छोटे और हल्के जहाज चलते हैं। कॉर्डोन फ्रांस का आख़िरी लाइटहाउस है जहां संरक्षक रहते हैं। अप्रैल से नवंबर के बीच यहां आम लोग भी आ सकते हैं। संरक्षक यह सुनिश्चित करते हैं कि इसकी रोशनी दिन-रात लगातार चमकती रहे और टावर के साथ-साथ आस-पास की जगह की देख-रेख भी होती रहे।
2002 में इसे यूनेस्को ने विश्व धरोहर घोषित किया था। लाइटहाउस के रखवाले सामाजिक जीवन और परिवार से दूर एकांत में रहते हैं, फिर भी लगातार सतर्कता बनाए रखते हैं।
बेनॉयट जेनोरिये पिछले 8 साल से लाइटहाउस के संरक्षक हैं। अपनी नौकरी के सबसे कठिन पहलू के बारे में पूछने पर उनका कहना है कि सभी संरक्षकों के लिए यह अलग-अलग है। वह कहते हैं, "मौसम की स्थितियां मुश्किल हैं। फिर रोज के काम हैं, सर्दियां हैं...असल में सर्दियां में आराम रहता है जब कोई मेहमान यहां नहीं आते।"
