मुझे इस आसरे के लिए उसके साथ नियमित रूप से सेक्स करना था। लंदन में 'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स' का रैकेट चल रहा था जिसमें कुछ मकान मालिक किरायदारों से 'मुफ़्त' आवास के बदले सेक्स की डिमांड कर रहे थे। बीबीसी थ्री की डॉक्यूमेंट्री के लिए मुझे ये पड़ताल करनी थी कि ये रैकेट किस पैमाने पर चल रहा है और इस सिलसिले में मैं एक अंडरकवर ऑपरेशन पर गई।
जिस शख़्स से मैं रूबरू थी, उसके लिए मैं 24 साल की नर्सिंग स्टूडेंट थी जिसके पास रहने के लिए कोई छत नहीं थी। वो लंदन के जिस घर में रहता था, वहां और लोग भी उसके साथ रहते थे। लेकिन फिर भी उसने कहा कि बाक़ी लोगों से कोई दिक्कत नहीं होगी, बस हमें ये कहना होगा कि मैं उसकी गर्लफ़्रेंड हूं।
जब मैंने हिचकिचाहट दिखाई तो उसने मुझे कन्विंस करने की कोशिश की। उस शख़्स ने कहा, "ऑनलाइन रूम ऑफ़र करने वाले अधेड़ लोगों से मैं बेहतर विकल्प हूं।" उसने कहा, "बहुत मजा आएगा मेरा यकीन करो..."

'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स'
इस शहर में वो कोई अकेला शख़्स नहीं था जो 'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स' का ऑफ़र कर रहा था। मैंने एक लोकप्रिय क्लासीफ़ाइड विज्ञापनों वाली वेबसाइट भी खंगाली। दर्जनों ऐसे विज्ञापन झट से सामने आ गए जो 'एडल्ट ऐरेंजमेंट्स' के बदले कमरे की पेशकश कर रहे थे। ऐसे विज्ञापनों का दायरा पूरे ब्रिटेन में फैला था, ब्राइटन से एडिनबरा तक, बड़े शहरों से लेकर छोटे शहर तक...
मैंने इन विज्ञापनों के प्रति दिलचस्पी दिखानी शुरू कर दी। कुछ ही मिनट बीते थे कि एक जवाब आया जिसमें साफ़ तौर पर सेक्स के लिए इशारा था। एक लैंडलॉर्ड ने फ़ौरन मेरी बॉडी और मेरी ब्रॉ का साइज़ पूछा। एक दूसरे शख़्स ने कहा कि जब तक आप इस 'एडल्ट ऐरेजमेंट' के लिए खुशी से तैयार नहीं हो जातीं, हम व्हॉट्सऐप पर बात जारी रह सकते हैं।

बिज़नेस ट्रांज़ैक्शन
स्कॉटलैंड में मैं जिस लड़के से मिली थी, उसकी उम्र कोई 24 साल थी। वह हर दूसरे दिन सेक्स या ऐसा ही कुछ करना चाहता था। लेकिन सेक्स में इमोशन वाली बात से वो इत्तेफ़ाक़ नहीं रखता था। उसने कहा, "मैं इसे बिज़नेस ट्रांजैक्शन के तौर पर देख रहा हूं।"
मैं इन लोगों के सामने खुद को एक लाचार लड़की के तौर पर पेश कर रही थी जिसके पास पैसे नहीं थे और रहने के लिए कोई ठिकाना नहीं था। मैं हैरत में थी कि ये मकान मालिक किस बेशर्मी से मुझे रहने के लिए जगह देने के एवज़ में अपने साथ सोने के लिए कह रहे थे।
उन्हें इस बात की कोई परवाह नहीं थी कि जिस चीज़ के लिए वो मुझसे कह रहे हैं, उसका मुझ पर क्या असर पड़ेगा। हक़ीक़त तो ये थे कि ज़्यादातर लैंडलॉर्ड्स में इस बात का भी एहसास नहीं दिख रहा था कि वे कुछ ग़लत कर रहे हैं। उन्हें ये बात समझ में नहीं आ रही थी कि 'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स' वाले विज्ञापन अवैध हो सकते हैं।
किसी घर में कमरा देने के एवज़ में सेक्स की मांग वेश्यावृत्ति के लिए प्रोत्साहित करना करार दिया जा सकता है। इंग्लैंड और वेल्स में इसके लिए सात साल की सज़ा का प्रावधान है।
जब मैंने इन मकान मालिकों से मुलाकात के बाद उन्हें बीबीसी थ्री की इस पड़ताल के बारे में लिखा और उनसे उनका पक्ष जानना चाहा तो केवल दो ही लोगों ने जवाब दिया। एक ने जवाब दिया कि वो रज़ामंदी से सेक्स के लिए सहमति चाह रहा था और उसने कोई ग़लत काम नहीं किया है।

दूसरे शख़्स ने कहा कि वो केवल काउच-सर्फिंग (घर में साथ रहने) के लिए कह रहे थे जिसमें वो मुझे अपने सोफे पर मुफ़्त में रहने के लिए इज़ाजत देने वाला था। लेकिन सच यही है कि जो लोग इन विज्ञापनों के जाल में फंस रहे हैं, उनकी स्थिति ख़राब है, उनके पास रहने के लिए कोई ठिकाना नहीं है।
मैं एक ऐसी लड़की से मिली जिसने 'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स' का सहारा लिया था। तब वो 20 बरस की थी। जब तक वो उस घर में गई नहीं थी तब तक उसे एहसास नहीं था कि उसने कैसा सौदा किया है जिसमें उसे लैंडलॉर्ड के साथ एक ही बिस्तर पर सोना था।
उसने लैंडलॉर्ड से कहा भी कि वो उसके साथ नहीं सोना चाहती लेकिन इसके बावजूद वो उसे छूने की लगातार कोशिश करता रहा। उस लड़की ने मुझे बताया, "लैंडलॉर्ड ने मेरे साथ ज़बरदस्ती नहीं की, इसलिए मैं उसकी एहसानमंद हूं।"
उस लैंडलॉर्ड से मिलने से पहले तक वो बेघर थी, दोबारा बेघर होने के डर की वजह से वो लंबे समय तक उस मकान मालिक के साथ रही। जब मैंने उसके लैंडलॉर्ड से इसके बारे में पूछा तो उसने कहा, "मेरा मानना है कि अगर वो मेरे साथ रह रही थी तो इसका मतलब ये था कि वो नाखुश नहीं थी।"...लैंडलॉर्ड ने ये भी दावा कि उसने कभी भी उस लड़की से सेक्स नहीं किया और न ही इसकी फ़रमाइश की।

'एडल्ट ऐरेजमेंट्स'
मेरा सामना एक ऐसे अधेड़ लैंडलॉर्ड से भी हुआ जो 'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स' का ऑफ़र कर रहा था। वो न्यूकैसल के एक फ़्लैट में अकेले रहता था। जिस कैफ़े में हम मिल रहे थे, वहां से वो भड़कते हुए बाहर निकल गया लेकिन आख़िरकार वो बात करने के लिए तैयार हो गया।
उसका कहना था कि वो केवल 'साथी तलाश रहा था' और 'ये केवल सेक्स के लिए नहीं' था। उसने मुझसे कहा, "मुझे नहीं मालूम था कि मैं कोई ग़लत काम कर रहा था।"...एक औरत जो उसके साथ रह रही है, वो एहसान चुकाने के एवज में और बेघर होने के डर से उसके साथ सेक्स कर सकती है, भले ही इसमें उसकी मर्जी शामिल न हो।

मैं इस डॉक्यूमेंट्री के सिलसिले में जितने लैंडलॉर्ड्स से मिली, उनमें ज़्यादातर ये बात समझ नहीं पा रहे थे कि वे जो कर रहे हैं, उसमें क्या ग़लत है।
ग़रीबी के ख़िलाफ़ काम करने वाले और किरायेदारों के संगठन के 'एकॉर्न' की एलेन मोरान इसे कुछ यूं समझाती हैं, "हमारे समाज में कुछ लोग ये मानते हैं कि पसंद की चीज़ हासिल करने के लिए कमजोरों पर ताकत का इस्तेमाल जायज है और इस पर कोई सवाल नहीं पूछा जा सकता है।"

एलेन मोरान का कहना है, "उन्हें ये ताकत हासिल है और कानून लागू करने वाली एजेंसियां भी इसे नजरअंदाज कर देती हैं। कई बार कुछ लोग समाज में इस कदर अलग-थलग पड़ जाते हैं कि वे जिस्मानी नज़दीकियां हासिल करने के जायज तरीकों को समझे बिना इसके लिए तरस जाते हैं। कभी-कभी दोनों बातें एक साथ हो जाती हैं।"
एलेन का संगठन अब इस बात के लिए अभियान चला रहा है कि ब्रिटेन में 'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स' को ग़ैरक़ानूनी करार दिया जाए। उनकी मांग है कि इसे गुलामी प्रथा पर पाबंदी लगाने वाले क़ानून के दायरे में लाया जाना चाहिए ताकि मकानमालिकों पर कार्रवाई की जा सके।
वो कहती हैं, "सरकार को ये सार्वजनिक तौर पर कहना चाहिए कि 'रेंट फ़ॉर सेक्स' एक क्राइम है और ऐसा करने वालों पर कार्रवाई की जाएगी। हमें इस समस्या से निपटने के लिए ज़मीनी बदलाव करने होंगे।"
