- रेहान फ़ज़ल (दिल्ली)
भुवनेश्वर से इंदिरा गाँधी की कई यादें जुड़ी हुई हैं और इनमें से अधिकतर यादें सुखद नहीं हैं। इसी शहर में उनके पिता जवाहरलाल नेहरू पहली बार गंभीर रूप से बीमार पड़े थे जिसकी वजह से मई 1964 में उनकी मौत हुई थी और इसी शहर में 1967 के चुनाव प्रचार के दौरान इंदिरा गाँधी पर एक पत्थर फेंका गया था जिससे उनकी नाक की हड्डी टूट गई थी।
30 अक्तूबर 1984 की दोपहर इंदिरा गांधी ने जो चुनावी भाषण दिया, उसे हमेशा की तरह उनके सूचना सलाहकार एचवाई शारदा प्रसाद ने तैयार किया था। लेकिन अचानक उन्होंने तैयार आलेख से अलग होकर बोलना शुरू कर दिया। उनके बोलने का तेवर भी बदल गया।
रेहान फ़ज़ल की विवेचना
इंदिरा गांधी बोलीं, "मैं आज यहाँ हूँ। कल शायद यहाँ न रहूँ। मुझे चिंता नहीं मैं रहूँ या न रहूँ। मेरा लंबा जीवन रहा है और मुझे इस बात का गर्व है कि मैंने अपना पूरा जीवन अपने लोगों की सेवा में बिताया है। मैं अपनी आख़िरी सांस तक ऐसा करती रहूँगी और जब मैं मरूंगी तो मेरे ख़ून का एक-एक क़तरा भारत को मज़बूत करने में लगेगा।"
कभी-कभी नियति शब्दों में ढलकर आने वाले दिनों की तरफ़ इशारा करती है। भाषण के बाद जब वो राजभवन लौटीं तो राज्यपाल बिशंभरनाथ पांडे ने कहा कि आपने हिंसक मौत का ज़िक्र कर मुझे हिलाकर रख दिया। इंदिरा गाँधी ने जवाब दिया कि वो ईमानदार और तथ्यपरक बात कह रही थीं।
रातभर सोईं नहीं
उस रात इंदिरा जब दिल्ली वापस लौटीं तो काफ़ी थक गई थीं। उस रात वो बहुत कम सो पाईं। सामने के कमरे में सो रहीं सोनिया गाँधी जब सुबह चार बजे अपनी दमे की दवाई लेने के लिए उठकर बाथरूम गईं तो इंदिरा उस समय जाग रही थीं। सोनिया गांधी अपनी किताब 'राजीव' में लिखती हैं कि इंदिरा भी उनके पीछे-पीछे बाथरूम में आ गईं और दवा खोजने में उनकी मदद करने लगीं। वो ये भी बोलीं कि अगर तुम्हारी तबीयत फिर बिगड़े तो मुझे आवाज़ दे देना। मैं जाग रही हूँ।
हल्का नाश्ता
सुबह साढ़े सात बजे तक इंदिरा गांधी तैयार हो चुकी थीं। उस दिन उन्होंने केसरिया रंग की साड़ी पहनी थी जिसका बॉर्डर काला था। इस दिन उनका पहला अपॉएंटमेंट पीटर उस्तीनोव के साथ था जो इंदिरा गांधी पर एक डॉक्युमेंट्री बना रहे थे और एक दिन पहले उड़ीसा दौरे के दौरान भी उनको शूट कर रहे थे।
दोपहर में उन्हें ब्रिटेन के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री जेम्स कैलेघन और मिज़ोरम के एक नेता से मिलना था। शाम को वो ब्रिटेन की राजकुमारी ऐन को भोज देने वाली थीं। उस दिन नाश्ते में उन्होंने दो टोस्ट, सीरियल्स, संतरे का ताज़ा जूस और अंडे लिए। नाश्ते के बाद जब मेकअप-मेन उनके चेहरे पर पाउडर और ब्लशर लगा रहे थे तो उनके डॉक्टर केपी माथुर वहाँ पहुंच गए। वो रोज़ इसी समय उन्हें देखने पहुंचते थे।
उन्होंने डॉक्टर माथुर को भी अंदर बुला लिया और दोनों बातें करने लगे। उन्होंने अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति रोनल्ड रीगन के ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा मेकअप करने और उनके 80 साल की उम्र में भी काले बाल होने के बारे में मज़ाक़ भी किया।

अचानक फ़ायरिंग
नौ बजकर 10 मिनट पर जब इंदिरा गांधी बाहर आईं तो ख़ुशनुमा धूप खिली हुई थी। उन्हें धूप से बचाने के लिए सिपाही नारायण सिंह काला छाता लिए हुए उनके बग़ल में चल रहे थे। उनसे कुछ क़दम पीछे थे आरके धवन और उनके भी पीछे थे इंदिरा गाँधी के निजी सेवक नाथू राम।
सबसे पीछे थे उनके निजी सुरक्षा अधिकारी सब इंस्पेक्टर रामेश्वर दयाल। इस बीच एक कर्मचारी एक टी-सेट लेकर सामने से गुज़रा जिसमें उस्तीनोव को चाय सर्व की जानी थी। इंदिरा ने उसे बुलाकर कहा कि उस्तीनोव के लिए दूसरा टी-सेट निकाला जाए। जब इंदिरा गांधी एक अकबर रोड को जोड़ने वाले विकेट गेट पर पहुंची तो वो धवन से बात कर रही थीं।
धवन उन्हें बता रहे थे कि उन्होंने उनके निर्देशानुसार, यमन के दौरे पर गए राष्ट्रपति ज्ञानी जैल सिंह को संदेश भिजवा दिया है कि वो सात बजे तक दिल्ली लैंड कर जाएं ताकि उनको पालम हवाई अड्डे पर रिसीव करने के बाद इंदिरा, ब्रिटेन की राजकुमारी एन को दिए जाने वाले भोज में शामिल हो सकें।
अचानक वहाँ तैनात सुरक्षाकर्मी बेअंत सिंह ने अपनी रिवॉल्वर निकालकर इंदिरा गांधी पर फ़ायर किया। गोली उनके पेट में लगी। इंदिरा ने चेहरा बचाने के लिए अपना दाहिना हाथ उठाया लेकिन तभी बेअंत ने बिल्कुल प्वॉइंट ब्लैंक रेंज से दो और फ़ायर किए। ये गोलियाँ उनकी बग़ल, सीने और कमर में घुस गईं।
गोली चलाओ
वहाँ से पाँच फुट की दूरी पर सतवंत सिंह अपनी टॉमसन ऑटोमैटिक कारबाइन के साथ खड़ा था। इंदिरा गाँधी को गिरते हुए देख वो इतनी दहशत में आ गया कि अपनी जगह से हिला तक नहीं। तभी बेअंत ने उसे चिल्लाकर कहा गोली चलाओ। सतवंत ने तुरंत अपनी ऑटोमैटिक कारबाइन की सभी पच्चीस गोलियां इंदिरा गाँधी के शरीर के अंदर डाल दीं।
बेअंत सिंह का पहला फ़ायर हुए पच्चीस सेकेंड बीत चुके थे और वहाँ तैनात सुरक्षा बलों की ओर से कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं आई थी। अभी सतवंत फ़ायर कर ही रहा था कि सबसे पहले सबसे पीछे चल रहे रामेश्वर दयाल ने आगे दौड़ना शुरू किया। लेकिन वो इंदिरा गांधी तक पहुंच पाते कि सतवंत की चलाई गोलियाँ उनकी जांघ और पैर में लगीं और वो वहीं ढेर हो गए। इंदिरा गांधी के सहायकों ने उनके क्षत-विक्षत शरीर को देखा और एक दूसरे को आदेश देने लगे। एक अकबर रोड से एक पुलिस अफ़सर दिनेश कुमार भट्ट ये देखने के लिए बाहर आए कि ये कैसा शोर मच रहा है।

एंबुलेंस नदारद
उसी समय बेअंत सिंह और सतवंत सिंह दोनों ने अपने हथियार नीचे डाल दिए। बेअंत सिंह ने कहा, "हमें जो कुछ करना था हमने कर दिया। अब तुम्हें जो कुछ करना हो तुम करो।" तभी नारायण सिंह ने आगे कूदकर बेअंत सिंह को ज़मीन पर पटक दिया। पास के गार्ड रूम से आईटीबीपी के जवान दौड़ते हुए आए और उन्होंने सतवंत सिंह को भी अपने घेरे में ले लिया।
हालांकि, वहाँ हर समय एक एंबुलेंस खड़ी रहती थी। लेकिन उस दिन उसका ड्राइवर वहाँ से नदारद था। इतने में इंदिरा के राजनीतिक सलाहकार माखनलाल फ़ोतेदार ने चिल्लाकर कार निकालने के लिए कहा। इंदिरा गाँधी को ज़मीन से आरके धवन और सुरक्षाकर्मी दिनेश भट्ट ने उठाकर सफ़ेद एंबेसडर कार की पिछली सीट पर रखा। आगे की सीट पर धवन, फ़ोतेदार और ड्राइवर बैठे। जैसे ही कार चलने लगी सोनिया गांधी नंगे पांव, अपने ड्रेसिंग गाउन में मम्मी-मम्मी चिल्लाते हुए भागती हुई आईं।
इंदिरा गांधी की हालत देखकर वो उसी हाल में कार की पीछे की सीट पर बैठ गईं। उन्होंने ख़ून से लथपथ इंदिरा गांधी का सिर अपनी गोद में ले लिया। कार बहुत तेज़ी से एम्स की तरफ़ बढ़ी। चार किलोमीटर के सफ़र के दौरान कोई भी कुछ नहीं बोला। सोनिया का गाउन इंदिरा के ख़ून से भीग चुका था।
स्ट्रेचर ग़ायब
कार नौ बजकर 32 मिनट पर एम्स पहुंची। वहाँ इंदिरा के रक्त ग्रुप ओ आरएच निगेटिव का पर्याप्त स्टॉक था। लेकिन एक सफ़दरजंग रोड से किसी ने भी एम्स को फ़ोन कर नहीं बताया था कि इंदिरा गांधी को गंभीर रूप से घायल अवस्था में वहाँ लाया जा रहा है। इमरजेंसी वार्ड का गेट खोलने और इंदिरा को कार से उतारने में तीन मिनट लग गए। वहाँ पर एक स्ट्रेचर तक मौजूद नहीं था।
किसी तरह एक पहिए वाली स्ट्रेचर का इंतेज़ाम किया गया। जब उनको कार से उतारा गया तो इंदिरा को इस हालत में देखकर वहाँ तैनात डॉक्टर घबरा गए। उन्होंने तुरंत फ़ोन कर एम्स के वरिष्ठ कार्डियॉलॉजिस्ट को इसकी सूचना दी। मिनटों में वहाँ डॉक्टर गुलेरिया, डॉक्टर एमएम कपूर और डॉक्टर एस बालाराम पहुंच गए।
एलेक्ट्रोकार्डियाग्राम में इंदिरा के दिल की मामूली गतिविधि दिखाई दे रही थीं लेकिन नाड़ी में कोई धड़कन नहीं मिल रही थी। उनकी आँखों की पुतलियां फैली हुई थीं, जो संकेत था कि उनके दिमाग़ को क्षति पहुंची है। एक डॉक्टर ने उनके मुंह के ज़रिए उनकी साँस की नली में एक ट्यूब घुसाई ताकि फेफड़ों तक ऑक्सीजन पहुंच सके और दिमाग़ को ज़िंदा रखा जा सके।
इंदिरा को 80 बोतल ख़ून चढ़ाया गया जो उनके शरीर की सामान्य ख़ून मात्रा का पांच गुना था। डॉक्टर गुलेरिया बताते हैं, "मुझे तो देखते ही लग गया था कि वो इस दुनिया से जा चुकी हैं। उसके बाद हमने इसकी पुष्टि के लिए ईसीजी किया। फिर मैंने वहाँ मौजूद स्वास्थ्य मंत्री शंकरानंद से पूछा कि अब क्या करना है? क्या हम उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दें? उन्होंने कहा नहीं। फिर हम उन्हें ऑपरेशन थियेटर में ले गए।"
सिर्फ़ दिल सलामत
डॉक्टरों ने उनके शरीर को हार्ट एंड लंग मशीन से जोड़ दिया जो उनके रक्त को साफ़ करने का काम करने लगी और जिसकी वजह से उनके रक्त का तापमान सामान्य 37 डिग्री से घटकर 31 डिग्री हो गया। ये साफ़ था कि इंदिरा इस दुनिया से जा चुकी थीं लेकिन तब भी उन्हें एम्स की आठवीं मंज़िल स्थित ऑपरेशन थियेटर में ले जाया गया।
डॉक्टरों ने देखा कि गोलियों ने उनके लीवर के दाहिने हिस्से को छलनी कर दिया था, उनकी बड़ी आंत में कम से कम बारह छेद हो गए थे और छोटी आंत को भी काफ़ी क्षति पहुंची थी। उनके एक फेफड़े में भी गोली लगी थी और रीढ़ की हड्डी भी गोलियों के असर से टूट गई थी। सिर्फ़ उनका हृदय सही सलामत था।
योजना बनाकर साथ ड्यूटी
अपने अंगरक्षकों द्वारा गोली मारे जाने के लगभग चार घंटे बाद दो बजकर 23 मिनट पर इंदिरा गांधी को मृत घोषित किया गया।
लेकिन सरकारी प्रचार माध्यमों ने इसकी घोषणा शाम छह बजे तक नहीं की। इंदिरा गांधी की जीवनी लिखने वाले इंदर मल्होत्रा बताते थे कि ख़ुफ़िया एजेंसियों ने आशंका प्रकट की थी कि इंदिरा गाँधी पर इस तरह का हमला हो सकता है। उन्होंने सिफ़ारिश की थी कि सभी सिख सुरक्षाकर्मियों को उनके निवास स्थान से हटा लिया जाए। लेकिन जब ये फ़ाइल इंदिरा के पास पहुंची तो उन्होंने बहुत ग़ुस्से में उस पर तीन शब्द लिखे, "आरंट वी सेकुलर? (क्या हम धर्मनिरपेक्ष नहीं हैं?)"
उसके बाद ये तय किया गया कि एक साथ दो सिख सुरक्षाकर्मियों को उनके नज़दीक ड्यूटी पर नहीं लगाया जाएगा। 31 अक्तूबर के दिन सतवंत सिंह ने बहाना किया कि उनका पेट ख़राब है। इसलिए उसे शौचालय के नज़दीक तैनात किया जाए। इस तरह बेअंत और सतवंत एक साथ तैनात हुए और उन्होंने इंदिरा गाँधी से ऑपरेशन ब्लूस्टार का बदला ले लिया।
