'रेड वन, यू आर ऑन फ़ायर'…स्क्वाड्रन लीडर धीरेंद्र जाफ़ा के हेडफ़ोन में अपने साथी पायलट फ़र्डी की आवाज़ सुनाई दी। दूसरे पायलट मोहन भी चीख़े, 'बेल आउट रेड वन बेल आउट।' तीसरे पायलट जग्गू सकलानी की आवाज़ भी उतनी ही तेज़ थी, 'जेफ़ सर... यू आर.... ऑन फ़ायर.... गेट आउट.... फ़ॉर गॉड सेक.... बेल आउट..'
जाफ़ा के सुखोई विमान में आग की लपटें उनके कॉकपिट तक पहुंच रही थीं। विमान उनके नियंत्रण से बाहर होता जा रहा था। उन्होंने सीट इजेक्शन का बटन दबाया जिसने उन्हें तुरंत हवा में फेंक दिया और वो पैराशूट के ज़रिए नीचे उतरने लगे।
जाफ़ा बताते हैं कि जैसे ही वो नीचे गिरे नार-ए-तकबीर और अल्लाह हो अकबर के नारे लगाती हुई गाँव वालों की भीड़ उनकी तरफ़ दौड़ी। लोगों ने उन्हें देखते ही उनके कपड़े फाड़ने शुरू कर दिए। किसी ने उनकी घड़ी पर हाथ साफ़ किया तो किसी ने उनके सिगरेट लाइटर पर झपट्टा मारा।
सेकेंडों में उनके दस्ताने, जूते, 200 पाकिस्तानी रुपए और मफ़लर भी गायब हो गए। तभी जाफ़ा ने देखा कि कुछ पाकिस्तानी सैनिक उन्हें भीड़ से बचाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। एक लंबे चौड़े सैनिक अफ़सर ने उनसे पूछा, 'तुम्हारे पास कोई हथियार है?' जाफ़ा ने कहा, 'मेरे पास रिवॉल्वर थी, शायद भीड़ ने उठा ली।'
'क्या जख़्मी हो गए हो?'
'लगता है रीढ़ की हड्डी चली गई है। मैं अपने शरीर का कोई हिस्सा हिला नहीं सकता।' जाफ़ा ने कराहते हुए जवाब दिया। उस अफ़सर ने पश्तो में कुछ आदेश दिए और जाफ़ा को दो सैनिकों ने उठा कर एक टेंट में पहुंचाया। पाकिस्तानी अफ़सर ने अपने मातहतों से कहा, इन्हें चाय पिलाओ।
जाफ़ा के हाथ में इतनी ताक़त भी नहीं थी कि वो चाय का मग अपने हाथों में पकड़ पाते। एक पाकिस्तानी सैनिक उन्हें अपने हाथों से चम्मच से चाय पिलाने लगा। जाफ़ा की आखें कृतज्ञता से नम हो गईं।
पाकिस्तानी जेल में राष्ट्र गान
जाफ़ा की कमर में प्लास्टर लगाया गया और उन्हें जेल की कोठरी में बंद कर दिया गया। रोज़ उनसे सवाल-जवाब होते। जब उन्हें टॉयलेट जाना होता तो उनके मुंह पर तकिये का गिलाफ़ लगा दिया जाता ताकि वो इधर उधर देख न सकें। एक दिन उन्हें उसी बिल्डिंग के एक दूसरे कमरे में ले जाया गया।
जैसे ही वो कमरे के पास पहुंचे, उन्हें लोगों की आवाज़ें सुनाई देने लगीं। जैसे ही वो अंदर घुसे, सारी आवाज़ें बंद हो गईं। अचानक ज़ोर से एक स्वर गूंजा, 'जेफ़ सर!'… और फ़्लाइट लेफ़्टिनेंट दिलीप पारुलकर उन्हें गले लगाने के लिए तेज़ी से बढ़े।
उन्हें दिखाई ही नहीं दिया कि जाफ़ा की ढीली जैकेट के भीतर प्लास्टर बंधा हुआ था। वहाँ पर दस और भारतीय युद्धबंदी पायलट मौजूद थे। इतने दिनों बाद भारतीय चेहरे देख जाफ़ा की आँखों से आंसू बह निकले। तभी युद्धबंदी कैंप के इंचार्ज स्क्वाड्रन लीडर उस्मान हनीफ़ ने मुस्कराते हुए कमरे में प्रवेश किया।
उनके पीछे उनके दो अर्दली एक केक और सबके लिए चाय लिए खड़े थे। उस्मान ने कहा- मैंने सोचा मैं आप लोगों को क्रिसमस की मुबारकबाद दे दूँ। वो शाम एक यादगार शाम रही।
हँसी मज़ाक के बीच वहाँ मौजूद सबसे सीनियर भारतीय अफ़सर विंग कमांडर बनी कोएलहो ने कहा कि हम लोग मारे गए अपने साथियों के लिए दो मिनट का मौन रखेंगे और इसके बाद हम सब लोग राष्ट्र गान गाएंगे। जाफ़ा बताते हैं कि 25 दिसंबर, 1971 की शाम को पाकिस्तानी जेल में जब भारत के राष्ट्र गान की स्वर लहरी गूंजी तो उनके सीने गर्व से चौड़े हो गए।

दीवार में छेद
इस बीच भारत की नीति नियोजन समिति के अध्यक्ष डीपी धर पाकिस्तान आकर वापस लौट गए, लेकिन इन युद्धबंदियों के भाग्य का कोई फ़ैसला नहीं हुआ। उनके मन में निराशा घर करने लगी। सबसे ज़्यादा मायूसी थी फ़्लाइट लेफ़्टिनेंट दिलीप पारुलकर और मलविंदर सिंह गरेवाल के मन में।
1971 की लड़ाई से पहले एक बार पारुलकर ने अपने साथियों से कहा था कि अगर कभी उनका विमान गिरा दिया जाता है और वो पकड़ लिए जाते हैं, तो वो जेल में नहीं बैठेंगे। वो वहाँ से भागने की कोशिश करेंगे और यही उन्होंने किया। बाहर भागने की उनकी इस योजना में उनके साथी थे- फ़्लाइट लेफ़्टिनेंट गरेवाल और हरीश सिंहजी।
हरा पठानी सूट
तय हुआ कि सेल नंबर 5 की दीवार में 21 बाई 15 इंच का छेद किया जाए जो पाकिस्तानी वायु सेना के रोज़गार दफ़्तर के अहाते में खुलेगा और उसके बाद 6 फ़ुट की दीवार फ़लांग कर वो माल रोड पर क़दम रखेंगे। इसका मतलब था क़रीब 56 ईंटों को उसका प्लास्टर निकाल कर ढीला करना और उससे निकलने वाले मलबे को कहीं छिपाना।
कुरुविला ने एक इलेक्ट्रीशियन का स्क्रू ड्राइवर चुराया। गरेवाल ने कोको कोला की बोतल में छेद करने वाले धारदार औज़ार का इंतज़ाम किया। रात में दिलीप पारुलकर और गरेवाल दस बजे के बाद प्लास्टर खुरचना शुरू करते और हैरी और चाटी निगरानी करते कि कहीँ कोई पहरेदार तो नहीं आ रहा है। इस बीच ट्रांज़िस्टर के वॉल्यूम को बढ़ा दिया जाता।
भारतीय क़ैदियों को जिनेवा समझौते की शर्तों के हिसाब से पचास फ़्रैंक के बराबर पाकिस्तानी मुद्रा हर माह वेतन के तौर पर मिला करती थी जिससे वो अपनी ज़रूरत की चीज़े ख़रीदते और कुछ पैसे बचा कर भी रखते।
इस बीच पारुलकर को पता चला कि एक पाकिस्तानी गार्ड औरंगज़ेब दर्ज़ी का काम भी करता है। उन्होंने उससे कहा कि भारत में हमें पठान सूट नहीं मिलते हैं। क्या आप हमारे लिए एक सूट बना सकते हैं?
औरंगज़ेब ने पारुलकर के लिए हरे रंग का पठान सूट सिला। कामत ने तार और बैटरी की मदद से सुई को मैग्नेटाइज़ कर एक कामचलाऊ कंपास बनाया जो देखने में फ़ाउंटेन पेन की तरह दिखता था।
आँधी और तूफ़ान में जेल से निकले
14 अगस्त को पाकिस्तान का स्वतंत्रता दिवस था। पारुलकर ने अंदाज़ा लगाया कि उस दिन गार्ड लोग छुट्टी के मूड में होंगे और कम सतर्क होंगे। 12 अगस्त की रात उन्हें बिजली कड़कने की आवाज़ सुनाई दी और उसी समय प्लास्टर की आख़िरी परत भी जाती रही।
तीन लोग छोटे से छेद से निकले और दीवार के पास इंतज़ार करने लगे। धूल भरी आँधी के थपेड़े उनके मुँह पर लगना शुरू हो गए थे। नज़दीक ही एक पहरेदार चारपाई पर बैठा हुआ था, लेकिन जब उन्होंने उसकी तरफ़ ध्यान से देखा तो पाया कि उसने धूल से बचने के लिए अपने सिर पर कंबल डाला हुआ था।
क़ैदियों ने बाहरी दीवार से माल रोड की तरफ़ देखा। उन्हें सड़क पर ख़ासी हलचल दिखाई दी। उसी समय रात का शो समाप्त हुआ था। तभी आँधी के साथ बारिश भी शुरू हो गई। चौकीदार ने अपने मुंह के ऊपर से कंबल उठाया और चारपाई समेत वायुसेना के रोज़गार दफ़्तर के बरामदे की तरफ़ दौड़ लगा दी।
जैसे ही उसमे अपने सिर पर दोबारा कंबल डाला तीनों क़ैदियों ने जेल की बाहरी दीवार फलांग ली। तेज़ चलते हुए वो माल रोड पर बांए मुड़े और सिनेमा देख कर लौट रहे लोगों की भीड़ में खो गए।
थोड़ी दूर चलने के बाद अचानक फ़्लाइट लेफ़्टिनेंट हरिश सिंह जी को एहसास हुआ कि वो पाकिस्तान की सबसे सुरक्षित समझी जाने वाली जेल से बाहर आ गए हैं।।. वो ज़ोर से चिल्लाए..'आज़ादी !' फ़्लाइट लेफ़्टिनेंट मलविंदर सिंह गरेवाल का जवाब था, 'अभी नहीं।'

ईसाई नाम
लंबे चौड़ क़द के गरेवाल ने दाढ़ी बढ़ाई हुई थी। उनके सिर पर बहुत कम बाल थे और वो पठान जैसे दिखने की कोशिश कर रहे थे। उनकी बग़ल में चल रहे थे फ़्लाइट लेफ्टिनेंट दिलीप पारुलकर। उन्होंने भी दाढ़ी बढ़ाई हुई थी और इस मौक़े के लिए ख़ास तौर पर सिलवाया गया हरे रंग का पठान सूट पहना हुआ था।
सबने तय किया कि वो अपने आप को ईसाई बताएंगे क्योंकि उनमें से किसी को नमाज़ पढ़नी नहीं आती थी। वो सभी ईसाई स्कूलों में पढ़े थे और उन्होंने भारतीय वायु सेना में काम कर रहे ईसाइयों को नज़दीक से देखा था।
उन्हें ये भी पता था कि पाकिस्तानी वायु सेना में भी बहुत से ईसाई काम करते थे। दिलीप का नया नाम था फ़िलिप पीटर और गरेवाल ने अपना नया नाम रखा था अली अमीर। ये दोनों लाहौर के पीएएफ़ स्टेशन पर काम कर रहे थे। सिंह जी का नया नाम था हारोल्ड जैकब, जो हैदराबाद सिंध में पाकिस्तानी वायु सेना में ड्रमर का काम करते थे। पूछे जाने पर उन्हें बताना था कि उनकी इन दोनों से मुलाक़ात लाहौर के लाबेला होटल में हुई थी।
पेशावर की बस
भीगते हुए वो तेज़ क़दमों से चल कर बस स्टेशन पहुंच गए। वहाँ पर एक कंडक्टर चिल्ला रहा था, 'पेशावर जाना है भाई? पेशावर! पेशावर!' तीनों लोग कूद कर बस में बैठ गए। सुबह के छह बजते बजते वो पेशावर पहुंच गए। वहाँ से उन्होंने जमरूद रोड जाने के लिए तांगा किया। तांगे से उतरने के बाद उन्होंने पैदल चलना शुरू कर दिया।
फिर वो एक बस पर बैठे। उसमें जगह नहीं थी तो कंडक्टर ने उन्हें बस की छत पर बैठा दिया। जमरूद पहुंच कर उन्हें सड़क पर एक गेट दिखाई दिया। वहाँ पर एक साइन बोर्ड पर लिखा था, 'आप जनजातीय इलाक़े में घुस रहे हैं। आगंतुकों को सलाह दी जाती है कि आप सड़क न छोड़ें और महिलाओं की तस्वीरें न खीचें।'
फिर एक बस की छत पर चढ़ कर वो साढ़े नौ बजे लंडी कोतल पहुंच गए। अफ़गानिस्तान वहाँ से सिर्फ़ 5 किलोमीटर दूर था। वो एक चाय की दुकान पर पहुंचे। गरेवाल ने चाय पीते हुए बगल में बैठे एक शख़्स से पूछा... यहाँ से लंडीखाना कितनी दूर है। उसको इस बारे में कुछ भी पता नही था।
दिलीप ने नोट किया कि स्थानीय लोग अपने सिर पर कुछ न कुछ पहने हुए थे। उन जैसा दिखने के लिए दिलीप ने दो पेशावरी टोपियाँ ख़रीदी। एक टोपी गरेवाल के सिर पर फ़िट नहीं आई तो दिलीप उसे बदलने के लिए दोबारा उस दुकान पर गए।
तहसीलदार के अर्ज़ीनवीस को शक हुआ
जब वो वापस आए तो चाय स्टाल का लड़का ज़ोर से चिल्लाने लगा कि टैक्सी से लंडीखाना जाने के लिए 25 रुपए लगेंगे। ये तीनों टैक्सीवाले की तरफ़ बढ़ ही रहे थे कि पीछे से एक आवाज़ सुनाई दी। एक प्रौढ़ व्यक्ति उनसे पूछ रहा था क्या आप लंडीखाना जाना चाहते हैं? उन्होंने जब 'हाँ' कहा तो उसने पूछा आप तीनों कहाँ से आए हैं?
दिलीप और गैरी ने अपनी पहले से तैयार कहानी सुना दी। एकदम से उस शख़्स की आवाज़ कड़ी हो गई। वो बोला, 'यहाँ तो लंडीखाना नाम की कोई जगह है ही नहीं।.. वो तो अंग्रेज़ों के जाने के साथ ख़त्म हो गई।'
उसे संदेह हुआ कि ये लोग बंगाली हैं जो अफ़गानिस्तान होते हुए बांगलादेश जाना चाहते हैं। गरेवाल ने हँसते हुए जवाब दिया, 'क्या हम आप को बंगाली दिखते हैं? आपने कभी बंगाली देखे भी हैं अपनी ज़िंदगी में?'
बहरहाल तहसीलदार के अर्ज़ीनवीस ने उनकी एक न सुनी। वो उन्हें तहसीलदार के यहाँ ले गया। तहसीलदार भी उनकी बातों से संतुष्ट नहीं हुआ और उसने कहा कि हमें आप को जेल में रखना होगा।
एडीसी उस्मान को फ़ोन
अचानक दिलीप ने कहा कि वो पाकिस्तानी वायुसेना के प्रमुख के एडीसी स्क्वाड्रन लीडर उस्मान से बात करना चाहते हैं। ये वही उस्मान थे जो रावलपिंडी जेल के इंचार्ज थे और भारतीय युद्धबंदियों के लिए क्रिसमस का केक लाए थे। उस्मान लाइन पर आ गए। दिलीप ने कहा, 'सर आपने ख़बर सुन ही ली होगी। हम तीनों लंडीकोतल में हैं। हमें तहसीलदार ने पकड़ रखा है। क्या आप अपने आदमी भेज सकते हैं?'
उस्मान ने कहा कि तहसीलदार को फ़ोन दें। उन्होंने कहा कि ये तीनों हमारे आदमी हैं। इन्हें बंद कर दीजिए, हिफ़ाज़त से रखिए लेकिन पीटिए नहीं। दिलीप पारुलकर ने बीबीसी को बताया कि ये ख़्याल उन्हें सेकेंडों में आया था। उन्होंने सोचा कि वो इसका ज्यूरिस्डिक्शन इतनी ऊपर तक पहुंचा देंगे कि तहसीलदार चाह कर भी कुछ नहीं कर पाएगा।
उधर 11 बजे रावलपिंडी जेल में हड़कंप मच गया। जाफ़ा की कोठरी के पास गार्डरूम में फ़ोन की घंटी सुनाई दी। फ़ोन सुनते ही एकदम से हलचल बढ़ गई। गार्ड इधर उधर बेतहाशा भागने लगे। बाक़ी बचे सातों युद्धबंदियों को अलग कर अँधेरी कोठरियों में बंद कर दिया गया।
एक गार्ड ने कहा, 'ये सब जाफ़ा का करा धरा है। इसको इस छेद के सामने डालो और गोली मार दो। हम कहेंगे कि ये भी उन तीनों के साथ भागने की कोशिश कर रहा था।'
जेल के उप संचालक रिज़वी ने कहा, 'दुश्मन आख़िर दुश्मन ही रहेगा। हमने तुम पर विश्वास किया और तुमने हमें बदले में क्या दिया।' फिर सब युद्धबंदियों को लायलपुर जेल ले जाया गया। वहाँ भारतीय थलसेना के युद्धबंदी भी थे। एक दिन अचानक वहाँ पाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति ज़ुल्फ़िकार अली भुट्टो पहुंचे।
उन्होंने भाषण दिया, "आपकी सरकार को आपके बारे में कोई चिंता नहीं है। लेकिन मैंने अपनी तरफ़ से आपको छोड़ देने का फ़ैसला किया है।" एक दिसंबर, 1972 को सारे युद्धबंदियों ने वाघा सीमा पार की। उनके मन में क्षोभ था कि उनकी सरकार ने उन्हें छुड़ाने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं किया। भुट्टो की दरियादिली से उन्हें रिहाई मिली।
लेकिन जैसे ही उन्होंने भारतीय सीमा में क़दम रखा वहाँ मौजूद हज़ारों लोगों ने मालाएं पहना और गले लगा कर उनका स्वागत किया। पंजाब के मुख्यमंत्री ज्ञानी जैल सिंह ख़ुद वहाँ मौजूद थे। वाघा से अमृतसर के 22 किलोमीटर रास्ते में इनके स्वागत में सैकड़ों वंदनवार बनाए गए थे। लोगों का प्यार देखकर इन युद्धबंदियों का ग़ुस्सा जाता रहा। अगले दिन दिल्ली में राम लीला मैदान में इनका सार्वजनिक अभिनंदन किया गया।
स्वीट कैप्टीविटी
गरेवाल को बरेली में तैनात किया गया। उन्होंने अपनी एक साल की तनख़्वाह से 2400 रुपए में एक फ़िएट कार ख़रीदी। दिलीप ने वायु सेना प्रमुख पीसी लाल को एक फ़ाउंटेन पेन भेंट किया जो वास्तव में एक कंपास था जिसे जेल से भागने में मदद देने के लिए उनके साथियों ने तैयार किया था। दिलीप पारुलकर के माता पिता ने तुरंत उनकी शादी का इंतजाम किया।
भारत वापस लौटने के पाँच महीने बाद हुई उनकी शादी पर उन्हें अपने पाकिस्तानी जेल के साथी स्क्वाड्रन लीडर एवी कामथ का टेलीग्राम मिला, 'नो इस्केप फ्रॉम दिस स्वीट कैप्टीविटी !'
