हम हिंदुस्तानी बहुत बातूनी होते हैं। कोई मिल भर जाए, तो फिर जो बातों का सिलसिला शुरू होता है, वो कई बार घंटों तक चलता रहता है। और क्या हाल है...से शुरुआत होती है। फिर राष्ट्रीय-अंतरराष्ट्रीय मसलों तक खिंचती चली जाती है।
चाय की दुकान पर अनजान लोगों से बहसें लड़ाई जाती हैं। लोग पान खाने के शौक़ीन हों न हों, पान की दुकान पर हो रही चर्चा में ज़रूर शामिल हो जाते हैं। ट्रेन के सफ़र में मुबाहिसे छिड़ जाते हैं कि कौन सा नेता अच्छा और कौन ख़राब है।
पर, एक देश ऐसा भी है, जहां गप-शप को बहुत बुरा माना जाता है। जहां ख़ामोशी ही देश की संस्कृति है। जहां लोग एक-दूसरे से ये पूछना भी नापसंद नहीं करते हैं कि क्या हाल है। उत्तरी यूरोपीय देश फ़िनलैंड में कहा जाता है कि ख़ामोशी सोना है और बतियाना चांदी।
फ़िनलैंड के लोग मानते हैं कि अगर कोई अहम बात चर्चा के लिए नहीं है, तो ख़ामोश रहना बेहतर है। फ़िनलैंड में क़रीबी दोस्तों को छोड़ दें तो लोगों के बीच छोटी-मोटी गप-शप बिल्कुल नहीं होती।
हर तरफ़ बस सन्नाटा ही सन्नाटा
कॉफ़ी शॉप में जाएंगे तो बस इतनी सी बात होगी कि आप क्या चाहते हैं। आप किसी सार्वजनिक जगह पर बैठे हैं, टहल रहे हैं या मेट्रो मे सफ़र कर रहे हैं, कोई बात करता नहीं नज़र आएगा। सन्नाटा ही दिखेगा। लोग अपने आस-पास से गुज़र रहे अनजान लोगों से बेफ़िक्र रहते हैं, बात नहीं करते। ऐसे माहौल में किसी और देश के लोग शोर मचाने वाले समझे जाते हैं।
फ़िनलैंड में सॉना बाथ का बहुत चलन है। पूरे देश में क़रीब 20 लाख सॉना हैं। इनमें लोग दोस्तों के साथ जाते हैं। कई बार बिना कपड़ों के ही साथ में सॉना बाथ लेते हैं। यानी बंद ठिकानों में उन्हें ये नज़दीकी नहीं अखरती। पर जैसे ही लोग सॉना से बाहर आते हैं, उनका मिज़ाज एकदम बदल जाता है। फ़िनलैंड के लोग अक्सर विदेशी नागरिकों, सैलानियों या दोस्तों से भी कहीं पर अचानक मिलने-बतियाने में यक़ीन नहीं रखते।
यहां मिलती है गपशप करने की ट्रैनिंग
फ़िनलैंड में अंग्रेज़ी सिखाने वाली टीना लैटवाला कहती हैं कि वो लोगों को जो ट्रेनिंग देती हैं, उसमें एक सबक़ ये भी है कि दूसरों से कैसे छोटी-मोटी गप-शप की जाए।
ट्रेनिंग लेने वालों को कहा जाता है कि वो तसव्वुर करें कि कहीं जा रहे हैं और किसी से मुलाक़ात हो जाती है। टीना कहती हैं कि ट्रेनिंग के लिए आए लोगों को वाक़ई छोटी-सी बात करने में भी मुश्किल हो रही थी। फ़िनलैंड की छात्रा एलिना जेफ्रेमॉफ़ कहती हैं कि टीवी की वजह से वो दूसरे देशों की संस्कृति और गप-शप की अहमियत से वाक़िफ़ हुई हैं।
मगर, फ़िनलैंड में ये छोटी सी बात करना बहुत मुश्किल होता है। एलिना बताती हैं कि, 'टीना की क्लास में हमें बुनियादी बातें सिखाई गईं। जैसे कि, आप कैसे हैं। मैं ठीक हूं, तुम्हारी मां कैसी हैं। ये वो सवाल-जवाब थे जो बहुत बुनियादी थे। हमें इनके जवाब भी पता थे। मगर वो हमारी बातचीत का हिस्सा नहीं थे।'
भाषा का पेचीदा होना है एक वजह
एलिना कहती हैं कि फ़िनलैंड के समाज को थोड़ा खुलने, थोड़ा बेतकल्लुफ़ होने की ज़रूरत है। 'अगर मेट्रो में मेरा सामान गिर जाए और मैं उसे उठाते हुए ख़ुद पर हंसने लगूं, तो आस-पास मौजूद अनजान लोग भी मेरी हंसी में शामिल हों।'
फ़िनलैंड के लोगों की ख़ामोशी की कई वजहें बताई जाती हैं। पहली तो ये कि फ़िनिश भाषा बहुत पेचीदा है। सीधे संवाद मुश्किल है। फिर शहरों के बीच दूरियां भी बहुत हैं। इससे लोग छोटी बातों पर वक़्त ज़ाया करना पसंद नहीं करते।
लेकिन, हेलसिंकी यूनिवर्सिटी में पढ़ाने वाली प्रोफ़ेसर लॉरा कोल्बे कहती हैं कि फ़िनलैंड के लोगों को ख़ामोश मुल्क का तमगा पड़ोसी देशों ने दिया। वजह ये है कि हमेशा दूसरे देशों की संस्कृति की तुलना अपने यहां के चलन से की जाती है।
जैसे स्वीडन और जर्मनी से लोग फ़िनलैंड में आकर बसे। उन्हें अपने देश के मुक़ाबले यहां लोग कम बोलने वाले दिखे, तो उन्होंने इसे ख़ामोश देश का तमगा दे दिया। फ़िनलैंड में दो भाषाएं बोली जाती हैं फ़िनिश और स्वीडिश। छह साल की उम्र से फ़िनलैंड के लोग अंग्रेज़ी भी पढ़ने लगते हैं।

लॉरा मानती हैं कि फ़िनलैंड के लोगों को जब दूसरी या तीसरी भाषा में जज़्बात बयां करने पड़ते हैं, तो वो कुछ बोलने के बजाय ख़ामोशी को तरजीह देते हैं।
ओउलू यूनिवर्सिटी की रिसर्चर डॉक्टर एना वाटानेन इस बात से इत्तेफ़ाक़ रखती हैं। वो कहती हैं कि फ़िनलैंड और दूसरी भाषाओं के बीच फ़र्क़ है। बयां करने में जज़्बातों के मायने बदल जाते हैं। डॉक्टर एना कहती हैं कि तमाम देशों में ये सवाल आम है कि, 'आप कैसे हैं'। ये बातचीत शुरू करने वाला सवाल है। इसके जवाब में किसी गंभीर बात की उम्मीद नहीं की जाती है।
लेकिन फ़िनलैंड में यही बात 'मीता कूलु' कह कर बोली जाती है। इस सवाल के जवाब में ठोस बात पूछी जाती है। मतलब ये कि तुम्हारी ज़िंदगी कैसी चल रही है, ये बताओ। या ये कि तुम्हारे जीवन में नया क्या हो रहा है, ये बताओ।
बेकार सवालों की कोई जगह नहीं
लेखिका कैरोलिना कोरहोनेन कहती हैं कि ऐसा नहीं है कि फ़िनलैंड के लोग गप-शप नहीं करते। बस वो लोगों की निजता का सम्मान करते हैं। दूसरों को परेशान नहीं करना चाहते। वो बिना वजह के बात नहीं करना चाहते।
फ़िनलैंड की बात न करने की आदत पूरी दुनिया में मशहूर है। फ़ॉर्मूला वन ड्राइवर किमी रायक्कोनेन के बारे में मशहूर है कि वो लोगों से बात नहीं करते। इस पर कॉमिक बुक भी लिखी गई हैं। चीन में जो लोग चुप रहना चाहते हैं वो कहते हैं कि वो आध्यात्मिक रूप से फ़िनलैंड के वासी बन गए हैं। फ़िनलैंड के जो लोग विदेश में रह कर आते हैं, उन्हें अपने यहां का सन्नाटा खलने लगता है।
फ़िनलैंड की चॉकलेट बनाने वाली कंपनी गूडियो के सीओओ जूसी सैलोनेन कहते हैं कि, 'जब मैं अमरीका में रह कर अपने देश लौटा, तो एक कॉफ़ी की दुकान पर पहुंचने पर मुझे झटका लगा। मुझसे बस यही पूछा गया कि आपको क्या चाहिए। इसके आगे न किसी ने कुछ पूछा और न पीछे। ये मेरा देश है। मैं इसे पसंद करता हूं। मगर लोगों को थोड़ा तो खुलना चाहिए। इसमें कोई नुक़सान नहीं।'
उम्मीद यही की जानी चाहिए कि अपनी निजता का सम्मान करते हुए फ़िनलैंड के लोग, छोटी-मोटी बातचीत करना शुरू करेंगे।
