उस मां की तक़लीफ़ का अंदाज़ा भी नहीं लगाया जा सकता, जिसने एक ही जंग में अपने पांच बेटे गंवा दिए हों। इंग्लैंड की लिंकनशर काउंटी की एमी बीची ऐसी ही एक मां थीं जिनके आठ बेटों में से पांच, पहले विश्व युद्ध में मारे गए। जंग के सौ साल बाद बाद अब इन पांचों भाइयों की याद में दुनिया भर में क्रॉस बनाए जा रहे हैं जिससे प्रतीक के तौर पर ही सही, एक बार फिर उनको मिलाया जा सके।
जंग शुरू होने से पहले तक एमी का भरा-पूरा परिवार था। आठ बेटे और छह बेटियों वाली एमी के सभी बेटों ने जंग में हिस्सा लिया। पांच की मौत हो गई और एक से कभी मुलाक़ात नहीं हो सकी। एमी इतने बड़े नुक़सान के लिए तैयार नहीं थीं। साल 1918 के अप्रैल में किंग जॉर्ज पंचम और क्वीन मेरी ने एमी को उनके बलिदान के लिए शुक्रिया कहा तो एमी का जवाब था ''ये कोई त्याग नहीं था मैडम, मैंने उन्हें अपनी इच्छा से नहीं भेजा।''
जंग शुरू होने के समय, एमी का परिवार लिंकनशर छोड़कर लिंकन शहर के एवनडेल इलाक़े में जा चुका था। डाकिये की आवाज़ आते ही एमी किसी अच्छी ख़बर के लिए प्रार्थना करती थीं। डर लगा रहता था कि कहीं डाकिया 'आपको ये दुखद ख़बर देना मेरी ज़िम्मेदारी है' के साथ बात शुरू न करे। उनके बेटों की शहादत का सम्मान करने के लिए यूरोप, पूर्वी अफ़्रीका और ऑस्ट्रेलिया में क्रॉस लगाए जा रहे हैं। जिन्हें मशहूर लिंकन लाइमस्टोन नाम के पत्थर से बनाया गया है।
ऑस्ट्रेलियन और न्यूज़ीलैंड आर्मी का हिस्सा बने हैरोल्ड
एमी के सातवें बेटे हैरोल्ड अपने भाई क्रिस के साथ रोज़ी की तलाश में ऑस्ट्रेलिया गए थे। सूखे में फ़सल बर्बाद हो गई तो हैरोल्ड ऑस्ट्रेलिया और न्यूज़ीलैंड की आर्मी (ANZAC) में भर्ती हो गए।
उन्होंने 1915 में गलीपोली में लड़ाई भी लड़ी। जंग के दौरान पेचिश हो जाने पर 1916 में उन्हें मिस्र और वहां से फ़्रांस भेज दिया गया। उसी साल अगस्त में उन्होंने वेस्टर्न फ़्रंट से परिवार को एक ख़त लिखा-''क़िस्मत अच्छी थी कि गोली पसलियों में नहीं घुसी और बांह और छाती से निकल गई।''
कुछ महीने बाद हैरोल्ड वापस फ़्रांस में थे जहां की सर्दियों को उन्होंने एक ख़त में 'बहुत मुश्किल' बताया। वापस जंग में लौटने पर भाग्य ने साथ नहीं दिया और अप्रैल 1917 में गोली लगने से उनकी मौत हो गई। हैरोल्ड की याद में बनाया गया क्रॉस ऑस्ट्रेलिया के पर्थ में एंग्लिकन कैथेड्रल चर्च में लगाया गया है।

प्रकृति से प्यार करने वाले चार्ल्स
चार्ल्स एमी के दूसरे बेटे थे। परिवार में उन्हें प्यार से चार के नाम से बुलाया जाता था। चार्ल्स स्कूल में पढ़ाते थे लेकिन जंग शुरू होने पर उसमें शामिल हो गए। 1916 में फ़्रांस में लड़ रहे थे जब किडनी की बीमारी ने अस्पताल पहुंचा दिया।
अस्पताल में ही दो भाइयों के मारे जाने की ख़बर मिली तो चार्ल्स ने अपनी मां को नाराज़गी भरा ख़त भेजा- ''मुझे नहीं लगता किसी और परिवार ने देश के लिए हमसे ज़्यादा बलिदान किया है।''
कुछ हफ़्ते बाद चार्ल्स को पूर्वी अफ़्रीका में तंज़ानिया भेज दिया गया जहां जर्मनी के साथ ज़बर्दस्त लड़ाई चल रही थी। चार्ल्स को अफ़्रीका की क़ुदरती ख़ूबसूरती बहुत पसंद आई। सितंबर 1917 में लिखे एक ख़त में उन्होंने बताया- ''यहां की तितलियां बहुत ख़ूबसूरत और अलग-अलग तरह की हैं। काश मैं आते हुए कुछ सबसे अच्छी तितलियां ला सकूं।''
एक महीना भी नहीं बीता कि एमी को ख़त मिला कि चार्ल्स को सीने में गोली लगी है और उनके बचने की उम्मीद कम है। कुछ ही दिन में 39 साल के चार्ल्स की मौत हो गई। उनका क्रॉस तंज़ानिया के दार-ए-सलाम में लगाया गया है।
क्रिकेट खेलने वाले फ़्रैंक
फ़्रैंक अपनी बहनों के लाडले थे। मोटरसाइकिलों से प्यार करने वाले फ़्रैंक लिंकनशर के लिए क्रिकेट खेलते थे। पेशे से शिक्षक, फ़्रैंक ने 1914 में आर्मी जॉइन की और उन्हें मई 1916 में मोर्चे पर भेजा गया। नवंबर की एक धुंध भरी सुबह फ़्रैंक ऑफ़िस से आया एक ज़रूरी संदेश जवानों तक पहुंचाने जा रहे थे, जब दोनों पैरों में गोली लगने से घायल हो गए। फ़्रैंक की अगले दिन मौत हो गई। उनका क्रॉस फ़्रांस में लगाया गया है।
सबसे बड़े बेटे बर्नार्ड
गणित से प्यार करने वाले बर्नार्ड भी पढ़ाते थे। फ़्रांस में जंग लड़ने वाले सार्जेंट बीची सभी भाइयों में से सबसे ज़्यादा ख़त लिखते थे। सितंबर 1915 में उन्होंने एमी को लिखा ''मैं तीन दिन से ट्रेंच में था। ज़्यादातर समय बारिश होती रही। दिलचस्प अनुभव है। कुछ हो न रहा हो तो ट्रेंच में रहने में कोई ख़तरा नहीं होता।''

घर वाले अभी राहत की सांस ले ही रहे थे कि बर्नार्ड की मौत की ख़बर आ पहुंची। वह लूस की जंग में लड़ते हुए शहीद हो गए थे। एमी को मिला यह पहला शोक संदेश था। उसे पढ़ते वक़्त एमी को अंदाज़ा भी नहीं था कि उन्हें ऐसे संदेश बार-बार पढ़ने पड़ेंगे। बर्नार्ड की क़ब्र के बारे में कोई जानकारी नहीं है इसलिए उनके क्रॉस को फ़्रांस में दफ़न एक और लिंकनशर के जवान की क़ब्र पर लगाया गया है।
रेलवे में काम करने वाले लेनर्ड
लेनर्ड बीची परिवार के पढ़ाकू बच्चे थे जो कभी किसी झगड़े में नहीं फंसा। जंग शुरू होने के समय लेनर्ड लंदन के यूस्टन रेलवे स्टेशन पर बतौर क्लर्क काम करते थे। 1916 में 35 साल के लेनर्ड लंदन की आइरिश राइफ़ल्स में शामिल हुए। उसी साल क्रिसमस में उन्हें फ़्रांस भेज दिया गया। 1917 में भेजे गए सारे ख़तों में लेनर्ड भाइयों का हाल-चाल पूछते रहते थे।
चार्ल्स की मौत की ख़बर मिलने पर उन्होंने लिखा ''यह यक़ीन करना बहुत मुश्किल है कि वो चला गया। हर ऐसी ख़बर पहली ख़बर से ज़्यादा मुश्किल लगती है। काश मैं आपको देख पाता।''
लेनर्ड का यह सपना कभी पूरा नही हुआ। कुछ ही दिन बाद फ़्रांस के रुआन में ज़हरीली गैस से उनकी मौत हो गई। लेनर्ड ने मरते-मरते भी एक ख़त लिखा जिसकी लड़खड़ाती लिखावट में गैस का असर साफ़ नज़र आता है। राइफ़लमैन लेनर्ड बीची का क्रॉस वहीं की एक सीमेट्री में लगाया गया है।
बीची परिवार के बाक़ी सदस्य
एमी के सबसे छोटे बेटे सैम जंग के आख़िरी महीनों में लड़ने गए। उन्हें भी फ़्रांस भेजा गया। पहले ही पांच बेटे गंवा चुकी एमी के लिए यह बेहद चिंता की बात थी। लेकिन क़िस्मत से सैम सही सलामत वापस आ गया। हैरोल्ड के साथ ऑस्ट्रेलिया गए क्रिस ने भी जंग में स्ट्रेचर लाने-ले जाने की ड्यूटी की थी। एक पहाड़ी से गिरकर घायल हुए क्रिस को इलाज के लिए ऑस्ट्रेलिया भेजा गया जहां वो 85 साल की उम्र तक रहे।
एमी कभी क्रिस से नहीं मिल सकीं। एमी के छठे बेटे एरिक जंग में शामिल तो रहे लेकिन कभी मोर्चे पर लड़ने नहीं गए। जुलाई 1917 में भेजे गए एक ख़त में एरिक ने लिखा, ''मुझे पता है कि इतने बेटों को खोकर तुम कैसा महसूस कर रही होंगी। मुझे ये भी पता है कि तुम्हें लगातार चिंता रहती है कि कहीं हमारे साथ भी ऐसा न हो जाए। लेकिन उनकी मौत सम्मानजनक है और तुम्हारा नाम हमेशा उन बहादुर मांओं की फ़ेहरिस्त में शामिल होगा जिन्होंने देश पर अपने बेटे न्योछावर कर दिए।''
