अंटार्कटिका दुनिया का ऐसा ग़ैर आबाद हिस्सा है, जहां बर्फ़ ही बर्फ़ है। यहां सूरज की रोशनी ना के बराबर पहुंचती है। लेकिन रिसर्च बताती हैं कि अंटार्कटिका हमेशा से ऐसा नहीं था। एक दौर था, जब यहां घने जंगल थे। उन जंगलों में बड़े-बड़े डायनासोर घूमा करते थे। इस बात से साफ़ ज़ाहिर है कि यहां इतनी गर्मी रहती थी जो डायनासोर के ज़िंदा रहने के लिए ज़रूरी थी। फिर अचानक ऐसा क्या हुआ कि यहां के जंगल साफ़ हो गए। और तमाम डायनासोर ख़त्म हो गए।
इस सवाल का जवाब तलाशने के लिए हमें धरती के इतिहास के पन्ने पलटने होंगे। बताया जाता है कि अब से क़रीब 145 से 66 लाख साल पहले तक यहां बर्फ़ नाम के लिए भी नहीं थी। हालांकि इतने वर्ष पहले की बात सुनने में अटपटी लगती है लेकिन शोधकर्ताओं को यहां बर्फ़ में दबे डायनासोर के जो जीवाश्म मिले हैं, वो इसी दौर की तरफ़ इशारा करते हैं।
यही वो दौर था, जब तमाम डायनासोर ख़त्म हो गए। बताया जाता है इस दौर में एक उल्कापिंड धरती से टकराया था और उसने सब कुछ तहस-नहस कर दिया। भू-विज्ञान में इसे क्रिटेशियस महायुग कहते हैं। ये वो दौर था जब धरती से बड़े से बड़े जानवर विलुप्त हो गए। पहाड़ों की बर्फ़ पिघल कर समंदर में आ गई। समंदर का जलस्तर और दायरा अपनी इंतिहा तक बढ़ गए। दावा तो ये भी है कि हिंद महासागर का निर्माण इसी दौर में हुआ था।
सूरज की गर्मी और जीवन
उत्तरी और दक्षिणी ध्रुवों पर शोधकर्ताओं को ऐसे पेड़ और रेंग कर चलने वाले जानवरों के जीवाश्म मिले हैं, जिनके ज़िंदा रहने के लिए सूरज की गर्मी ज़रूरी है। साइंस की भाषा में इन्हें कोल्ड ब्लडेड रेप्टाइल्स यानी सर्द ख़ून वाले जीव कहा जाता है।
इनका शरीर भले ही बाहर के तापमान के अनुसार अपने शरीर का तापमान संतुलित कर लेता है। लेकिन, इन्हें सूरज की रोशनी और गर्मी चाहिए। आज भी हम तमाम तरह के रेंगने वाले जानवरों को धूप सेंकते देखते हैं। इसी बुनियाद पर कहा जाता है कि कभी यहां सूरज की पर्याप्त रोशनी रही होगी।
रिसर्च करने वालों ने उस दौर की आबो-हवा का अंदाज़ा लगाने के लिए महासागर में रहने वाले जीवों के जीवाश्मों के खोल पर भी अध्ययन किया। इसके ज़रिए उन्होंने पता लगाने की कोशिश की कि किस समय अंतराल पर धरती और समंदर के तापमान में कितना बदलाव आया। कितने जानवर उस बदलाव के हिसाब से ख़ुद को ढाल सके।

समुद्र पर की जा रही रिसर्च को फ़ोरामिनिफ़ेरा कहा जाता है। डॉ. ब्रायन ह्यूबर का कहना है कि इस रिसर्च में समुद्र की गहराई और ऊपरी सतह पर रहने वाले जीव-जंतुओं और समुद्र के तापमान पर रिसर्च की जाती है। और इस रिसर्च में बहुत दिलचस्प बातें सामने आई हैं। दरअसल समुद्र पर की गई रिसर्च से ही धरती की जलवायु बनने की सही तस्वीर उभर कर सामने आती है।
डॉ. ह्यूबर का कहना है कि अंटार्कटिका का उत्तरी हिस्सा काफ़ी गर्म होता था। यहां गर्मी का ये माहौल शायद उस दौर में बना जब धरती पर अचानक तापमान बढ़ा और सारी बर्फ़ पिघल गई। इस दौर को वैज्ञानिक क्रिटेशियस हॉट हाउस कहते हैं।
ये एक ख़ास तरह का ग्रीन हाउस इफ़ेक्ट है, जिसमें वातावरण में कार्बन डाई ऑक्साइड की मात्रा बढ़ जाती है। इसी दौर में समुद्र का दायरा ज़्यादा तेज़ी से बढ़ा। बढ़ते तापमान की वजह से ही ज्वालामुखियों में भी हलचल बढ़ी और उससे भी कार्बन डाई ऑक्साइड तेज़ी से बाहर निकली।
हालांकि ह्यूबर और उनके साथी अभी ये पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि क्या वाक़ई ज्वालामुखी से निकलने वाली कार्बन डाई ऑक्साइड और हॉट हाउस इफ़ेक्ट की वजह से धरती का तापमान इतना बढ़ा कि दुनिया भर की बर्फ़ पिघल गई और बहुत सी नस्लें ख़त्म हो गईं।
क्या पिघल जाएंगे ग्लेशियर?
ये हम सब जानते है कि धरती पर जलवायु-परिवर्तन होता रहता है, हो रहा है और आगे भी होता रहेगा। फिर भी क्रिटेशियस महायुग और आज के दौर में फ़र्क़ क्या है। क्या आज के जलवायु परिवर्तन से अंटार्कटिका बर्फ़ की क़ैद से आज़ाद हो पाएगा। ये बड़ा सवाल है। डॉ. ह्यूबर का कहना है कि आज हम एक दशक में सैकड़ों लाख टन कार्बन डाई ऑक्साइड माहौल में पैदा कर रहे हैं। इतने कम समय में इतनी ज़्यादा कार्बन डाई ऑक्साइड तो ज्वालामुखी भी माहौल को नहीं दे सकते।
फिर भी ग्लेशियर पिघलाने के लिए इतनी गर्मी काफ़ी नहीं है। हो सकता है फिलहाल तमाम बर्फ़ ना पिघले। लेकिन भविष्य में यक़ीनन पिघल जाएगी। इस बात के संकेत मिलने भी लगे हैं। पश्चिम अंटार्कटिका के ग्लेशियर पिघलने शुरू हो चुके हैं।
भू-वैज्ञानिकों का कहना है कि जितनी जल्दी समुद्र में पानी का स्तर बढ़ेगा उतनी ही जल्दी ग्लेशियरों की बर्फ़ पिघलेगी। हो सकता है कि इसके लिए इंतज़ार थोड़ा लंबा हो जाए। लेकिन ज़मीन के इस हिस्से को बर्फ़ से मुक़्ति ज़रूर मिल जाएगी। इंसान के लिए तब भी वहां रह पाना मुमकिन होगा या नहीं कहना मुश्किल है।
