किसी को इस बारे में सटीक जानकारी नहीं है। वैज्ञानिकों को कुछ जानकारी ज़रूर है, लेकिन यह सवाल अंतत: एक राज़ ही बना हुआ है। हालांकि हाल ही में कुछ वैज्ञानिकों ने एक ऐसा अध्ययन किया है जिससे मौत के तंत्रिका-विज्ञान के बारे में दिलचस्प जानकारियां मिली हैं। यह अध्ययन बर्लिन की चेरिट यूनिवर्सिटी और ओहायो की सिनसिनाटी यूनिवर्सिटी के वैज्ञानिकों ने जेन्स द्रेयर की अगुवाई में किया है।
इसके लिए वैज्ञानिकों ने कुछ मरीज़ों के तंत्रिका तंत्र की बारीक़ निगरानी की। इसके लिए उन्होंने उनके परिजनों से पूर्वानुमति ली थी। ये लोग या तो भीषण सड़क हादसों में घायल हुए थे या स्ट्रोक और कार्डिएक अरेस्ट का शिकार हुए थे। वैज्ञानिकों ने पाया कि पशु और मनुष्य दोनों के दिमाग मौत के वक़्त एक ही तरीक़े से काम करते हैं। साथ ही एक ऐसा वक़्त भी आता है जब दिमाग के काम-काज की 'आभासी रूप से' बहाली हो सकती है।
और यही इस अध्ययन का अंतिम मक़सद था। न सिर्फ मौत के वक़्त दिमाग़ों की निगरानी करना, बल्कि यह समझना कि किसी को उसके जीवन के अंतिम क्षण में मौत से कैसे बचाया जा सकता है।
जो हम पहले से जानते थे...
इन वैज्ञानिकों के शोध से पहले 'ब्रेन डेथ' के बारे में हम जितना जानते हैं, उनमें से ज़्यादातर जानकारियां हमें पशुओं पर किए गए प्रयोगों से मिली हैं।
हम जानते हैं कि मौत के वक़्त:
*शरीर में ख़ून का प्रवाह रुक जाता है और इसलिए दिमाग में ऑक्सीजन की कमी हो जाती है।
*सेरेब्रल इस्किमया नाम की इस स्थिति में ज़रूरी रासायनिक अवयव कम हो जाते हैं और जिससे दिमाग में 'इलेक्ट्रिकल एक्टिविटी' पूरी तरह ख़त्म हो जाती है।
*ये माना जाता है कि दिमाग शांत होने की यह प्रक्रिया इसलिए अमल में आती है क्योंकि भूखे न्यूरॉन अपनी ऊर्जा संरक्षित कर लेते हैं। लेकिन उनका ऊर्जा संरक्षित करना किसी काम नहीं आता क्योंकि मौत आने ही वाली होती है।
*सभी अहम आयन दिमागी कोशिकाओं को छोड़कर अलग हो जाते हैं, जिससे एडेनोसीन ट्राइफॉस्फेट की आपूर्ति कमज़ोर पड़ जाती है। *यही वह जटिल जैविक रसायन है जो पूरे शरीर में ऊर्जा को स्टोर करता है और उसे एक जगह से दूसरी जगह ले जाता है।

लेकिन वैज्ञानिकों की टीम इंसानों के संबंध में इस प्रक्रिया को और गहराई से समझना चाहती थी। इसलिए उन्होंने कुछ मरीज़ों के दिमाग की न्यूरोलॉजिकल गतिविधियों की निगरानी की। डॉक्टरों की ओर से निर्देश दिए गए थे कि इन मरीज़ों को इलेक्ट्रोड स्ट्रिप्स आदि के इस्तेमाल से बेहोशी से वापस लाने की कोशिश न की जाए।
वैज्ञानिकों ने पाया कि नौ में से आठ मरीज़ों के दिमाग की कोशिकाएं मौत को टालने की कोशिश कर रही थीं। उन्होंने पाया कि दिल की धड़कन रुकने के बाद भी दिमाग की कोशिकाएं और न्यूरॉन काम कर रहे थे।
न्यूरॉन के काम करने की प्रक्रिया यह होती है कि वे आवेशित आयन्स से ख़ुद को भर लेते हैं और अपने और अपने वातावरण के बीच विद्युत असंतुलन बनाते हैं। इससे वे छोटे झटके (शॉक) पैदा करने में सक्षम हो जाते हैं। वैज्ञानिकों के मुताबिक यह विद्युत असंतुलन बनाए रखना एक लगातार किया जाने वाला प्रयास है।
इसके लिए ये कोशिकाएं बहते हुए ख़ून का इस्तेमाल करती हैं और उससे ऑक्सीजन और रासायनिक ऊर्जा लेती हैं। वैज्ञानिकों के मुताबिक, जब शरीर मर जाता है और दिमाग को ख़ून का प्रवाह बंद हो जाता है तो ऑक्सीजन से वंचित न्यूरॉन उन छोड़ दिए गए संसाधनों को जमा करने की कोशिश करते हैं।
चूंकि यह धीरे धीरे फैले बिना पूरे मस्तिष्क में एक साथ होता है, इसे 'अनडिस्पर्स्ड डिप्रेशन' कहा जाता है। इसके बाद की स्थिति 'डिपोलराइज़ेशन ऑफ डिफ्यूज़न' कहलाती है, जिसे बोलचाल की भाषा में 'सेरब्रल सुनामी' कहते हैं।
इलेक्ट्रोकैमिकल बैलेंस की वजह से दिमाग की कोशिकाएं नष्ट हो जाती हैं जिससे ख़ासी मात्रा में थर्मल एनर्जी रिलीज़ होती है। इसके बाद इंसान की मौत हो जाती है। पर अध्ययन कहता है कि मौत जितनी अटल आज है, भविष्य में भी वैसी रहे यह ज़रूरी नहीं।
जेन्स द्रेयर कहते हैं, "एक्सपैन्सिव डिपोलराइज़ेशन से कोशिकीय परिवर्तन की शुरुआत होती है और फिर मौत हो जाती है, लेकिन यह अपने आप में मौत का क्षण नहीं है। क्योंकि डिपोलराइज़ेशन को ऊर्जा की आपूर्ति बहाल करके पलटा जा सकता है।"
हालांकि इसे अमल में लाने के लिए अभी काफी शोध की ज़रूरत है। द्रेयर कहते हैं कि मौत की तरह ही यह तंत्रिका संबंधी पहलू एक जटिल घटना है, जिससे जुड़े सवालों के आसान जवाब उपलब्ध नहीं है।
