દેશના 12 જ્યોર્તિલિંગમાં શામેલ કેદારનાથ ધામની પ્રસિદ્દિ 5માં જ્યોતિર્લિંગના રૂપમાં છે. અહીં સ્થિત શિવલિંગ સ્વયંભૂ ગણાય છે. મહાભારત કાળમાં બનેલા આ મંદિરનો જીર્ણોદ્ધાર આઠમી શતાબ્દીમાં આદિગુરૂ શંકરાચાર્યએ કરાવ્યો હતો. આ મંદિર કેદાર ઘાટીની પશ્ચિમ દિશામાં મંદાકિની નદીના કાંઠે બનેલું છે.

શિવ પુરાણમાં કહ્યું છે કે હિમાલયના કેદાર શ્રૃંગપર ભગવાન વિષ્ણુના અવતાર મહાન તપસ્વી નર અને નારાયણ ઋષિ તપસ્યા કરતા હતા. એમની આરાધનાથી પ્રસન્ન થઈને જ ભગવાન શંકર અહીં પ્રગટ થયા અને એમની પ્રાર્થના પર જ સ્વયંભૂ જ્યોતિલિંગના રૂપમાં અહી કાયમ માટે વાસ કરવાનું વરદાન આપ્યુ.

કહેવાય છે કે મહાભારતના યુદ્ધ પછી પાંડવ એમના ભાઈયો અને ગુરૂની હત્યાના પાપથી મુક્ત થવા ઈચ્છતા હતા અને તેમને એનાથી મુક્તિ માત્ર શંકર જ આપી શકતા હતા. આ કારણે પાંડવ ભગવાન શિવના સાક્ષાત દર્શન કરવા ઈચ્છતા હતા. પાંડવ શિવના દર્શન માટે કાશી ગયા પણ કાશીમાંથી ભગવાન શિવ અંર્તધ્યાન થઈને કેદાર ચાલ્યા ગયા. પાંડવ એમના પાછળ હિમાલય પહોચ્યા. આ જોઈને શિવજીએ બળદનું રૂપ ધારણ કરી લીધું અને પશુઓના ઝુંડમાં ભળી ગયા. પાંડવોના શંકા થઈ તો ભીમે વિશાળ રૂપ ધારણ કરી બે પહાડ પર પોતાના પગ ફેલાવી દીધા. બીજા પશુઓ તો ભીમના પગ નીચેથી નીકળી ગયા પણ ભગવાન શિવને આ યોગ્ય ન લાગ્યુ. ભીમ આ બળદ રૂપી શિવ પર ઝપટવા ઈચ્છતા હતા પણ શિવે બરફમાં અંર્તધ્યાન થવાની કોશિશ કરી. ભીમે બળદના પીઠનો ભાગને પકડી લીધો. પાંડવોના આ નિશ્ચયને જોઈને ભગવાન શિવ પ્રસન્ન થઈ ગયા અને પાંડવોને દર્શન આપી પાપ મુક્ત કરી દીધા. એ પછીથી જ ભગવાન શિવ અહીં પૂજાય છે.

કેદારનાથ ધામનું મંદિર કેટલું જૂનુ છે આ સંબંધમાં કોઈ પ્રમાણિક જાણકારી ઉપલબ્ધ નથી. કહેવાય છે કે આ મંદિર હજારો વર્ષ જૂનૂ છે. આદિ ગુરૂ શંકરાચાર્યએ આ મંદિરનો જીર્ણોદ્ધાર કરાવ્યો હતો. કેદારનાથ મંદિર એક ઉંચા ચબૂતરા પર બનેલું છે. મંદિરના મુખ્ય ભાગમાં મંડપ અને ગર્ભગૃહ છે. જ્યારે મંદિરના બહારના ચોકમાં શિવજીનું વાહન નંદી બળદ વિરાજમાન છે.

કેદારનાથ ધામના મંદિર કેટલું જૂનો ઓ છે આ સંબંધમાં કોઈ પ્રમાણિક જાણકારી ઉપલબ્ધ નથી. કહેવાય છે કે આ મંદિર હજારો વર્ષ જૂનૂ છે. આદિ ગુરૂ શંકરાચાર્યએ આ મંદિઅરના જીર્ણોધાર કરવાયું હતું. કેદારનાથ મંદિર એક ઉંચા ચબૂતરા પર બનેલું છે. મંદિરના મુખ્ય ભાગમાં મંડપ અને ગર્ભગૃહ છે. જ્યારે મંદિરના બહારના પરિસરમાં શિવજીના વાહન નંદી બળદ વિરાજમાન છે.

કેદારનાથની જેમ બદ્રીનાથ પણ હિન્દુઓની આસ્થનું ખૂબ મોટું કેંદ્ર છે . ઉતરાખંડમાં અલકનંદા નદીના કાંઠે વસેલું આ મંદિર ભગવાન વિષ્ણુને સમર્પિત છે.

બદ્રીનાથ મંદિર આદિકાળથી સ્થાપિત સતયુગનું પાવન ધામ ગણાય છે. વિશેષ વાત એ છે કે બદ્રીનાથના દર્શન પહેલા કેદારનાથના દર્શન કરવાની વાત પ્રચલિત છે.

કેદારનાથની જેમ જ બદ્રીનાથ મંદિરના કપાટ પણ વર્ષમાં માત્ર છ મહીના જ ખુલે છે જે એપ્રિલના અંત કે મે ના પ્રથમ અઠવાડિયામાં દર્શન માટે ખોલવામાં આવે છે. આશરે 6 મહીના સુધી પૂજા-અર્ચના પછી નવેમ્બરના બીજા અઠવાડિયામાં મંદિરના કપાટ બંદ કરવામાંં આવે છે.

બદ્રીનાથ ધામના મહત્વનો અંદાજો એ રીતે જ લગાવી શકાય છે કે ભગવાન વિષ્ણુએ જાતે જ કહ્યુ છે કે કળયુગમાં એ એમના ભક્તોને બદ્રીનાથમાં મળશે. પુરાણોમાં બદ્રીનાથ ધામને પૃથ્વીના બેકુંઠની ઉપમા આપી છે કારણકે અહીં સાક્ષાત ભગવાન વિષ્ણુ વિરાજમાન છે . બદ્રીનાથના વિશે એ પણ કહેવાય છે કે આ એક સમયે ભગવાન શિવનું નિવાસ સ્થાન હતુ પણ વિષ્ણુ ભગવાને આ સ્થાન શિવ પાસેથી માંગી લીધુ.
