જે દિવસોમાં ભગવાન વિષ્ણુ શયન કરે છે તે ચાર મહીનાને ચાતુર્માસ અને ચોમાસ પણ કહે છે. દેવશયની એકાદશીથી દેવપોઢી એકાદશી સુધી ચાતુર્માસ ચાલશે. એકાદશીથી એકાદશી સુધીનો ચાતુર્માસ સુધીના ચાર મહીનામાં જુદાજુદા ધાર્મિક કાર્ય કરવાથી માણસને ખાસ પુણ્ય લાભની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે. કારણકે આ દિવસોમાં કોઈ પણ જીવની તરફ કરેલ કોઈ પણ પુણ્યકર્મ ખાલી નહી જાય. આમ તો ચાતુર્માસનો વ્રત દેવશયની એકાદશીથી શરૂ થાય છે. પણ દ્વાદશી, પૂર્ણિમા, અષ્ટમી અને કર્કની સંક્રાતિથી પણ આ વ્રત શરૂ કરી શકાય છે. એકાદશીના દિવસે ભગવાનને પીળા વસ્ત્રથી શ્રૃંગાર કરી અને સફેદ રંગના શૈય્યા પર સફેદ રંગના જ વસ્ત્ર ઢાંકીને તેને શયન કરાવો.

ચાતુર્માસના જુદા-જુદા કર્મના પુણ્ય ફળ

પદમ પુરાણના મુજબ જે માણસ આ ચાર મહીના મંદીરમાં ઝાડૂ લગાવે છે અને મંદિરને ધોઈને સાફ કરે છે. કાચા સ્થાનને ગોબરથી લીપે છે. તેને સાત જન્મ સુધી બ્રાહ્મણની યોનિ મળે છે.

જે ભગવાનને દૂધ, દહીં, ઘી, મધ અને શાકરથી સ્નાન કરાવે છે. એ સંસારમાં વૈભવશાળી થઈને સ્વર્ગમાં જઈને ઈન્દ્ર જેવા સુખ ભોગે છે.

ધૂપ, દીપ, નેવૈદ્ય અને પુષ્પ વગેરેથી પૂજન કરતો પ્રાણી અક્ષય સુખ ભોગે છે.

તુલસીદળ કે તુલસી મંહરિયોથી ભગવાન પૂજન કરવા સ્વર્ણની તુલસી બાહ્મણને દાન કરવા પર પરમગતિ મળે છે. ગૂગલની ધૂ଑પ અને દીપ અર્પણ કરતા માણસ જન્મ જમાંતર સુધી ધનાડય રહે છે.

પીપળનો ઝાડ લગાવા પીપળ દરરોજ જળ ચઢાવવાથી, પીપળની પરિક્રમા કરવા, ઉત્તમ ધ્વનિવાળા ઘંટા મંદિરમાં ચઢાવવાથી, બ્રાહ્મણોનો ઉચિત સમ્માન કરતા

કોઈ પણ પ્રકારનો દાન આપવા કપિલા ગોનો દાન, મધથી ભરેલું ચાંદીનો વાસણ અને તાંબાના પાત્રમાં ગોળ ભરીને દાન કરવા, મીઠું, સત્તૂ, હળદર, લાલ વસ્ત્ર, તલ,જૂતા અને છાતા વગેરે યથાશક્તિ દાન કરતા પર અન્ન, વસ્ત્ર અને શૈય્યાનો દાન કરે છે. અને અક્ષય સુખને પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે. અને સદા ધનવાન રહે છે. એ ઉત્તમ ગતિને પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે.

જે ખાંડ દાન કરે છે તેને યશસ્વી સંતાનની પ્રાપ્તિ હોય છે.

માતા લક્ષ્મી અને પાર્વતીને પ્રસન્ન અકરવા માટે ચાંદીના પાત્રમાં હળદર ભરીને દાન કરવી જોઈએ અને ભગવાન શિવને પ્રસન્ન કરવા માટે બળદનો દાન કરવું શ્રેષ્ટ છે.

ચાતુર્માસ ફળનો દાન કરવાથી નંદન વનનો સુખ મળે છે.

જે લોકો નિયમથી એક સમય ભોજન કરે છે,ભૂખ્યાને ભોજન કરાવે છે , પોતે નિયમપૂર્વક થઈને ચોખા અને જવના ભોજન કરાવે છે, ભૂમિ પર શયન કરે છે તેને અક્ષય કીર્તિ પ્રાપ્ત હોય છે. આ દિવસોમાં આમળાથી યુક્ત જળથી સ્નાન કરવા અને મૌન રહીને ભજન કરવું શ્રેષ્ટ છે.

ચાતુર્માસમાં શું ન કરવું

શ્રાવણ એટ્લેને સાવનના મહીનામાં શાક અને લીલી શાકભાજી, ભ્રાદપદમાં દહીં, અશ્વિનમાં દૂધ અને કાર્તિકમાં દાળ ખાવું વર્જિત છે. કોઈની નિંદા કે ચુગલી ન કરવી અને ન જ કોઈથી દગાથી તેનનાથી કઈક હાસેલ કરવાવું જોઈએ. ચાતુર્માસમાં શરીર પર તેલ નહી લગાવું જોઈએ અને કાંસાના વાસણમાં ક્યારે ભોજન નહી

કરવું જોઈએ જે પોતાની ઈન્દ્રિયોનો દમન કરે છે એ અશ્વમેઘ યજ્ઞના ફળને પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે.

ચાતુર્માસમાં શું કરવું

શાસ્ત્રાનુસાર ચાતુર્માસ અને ચોમાસાના દિવસોમાં દેવકાર્ય વધારે હોય છે. જ્યારે હિન્દુઓના લગ્ન વગેરે ઉત્સવ નહી કરાય્ આ દિવસોમાં મૂર્તિ પ્રાણ પ્રતિષ્ઠા દિવસ ઉજવાય છે પણ નવમૂર્તિ પ્રાણ પ્રતિષ્ઠા અને નવનિર્માણ વગેરેના કાર્ય નહી કરાય જ્યારે ધાર્મિક અનુષ્ઠાન, શ્રીમદભાગવત જ્ઞાન યજ્ઞ, શ્રી રામાયણ અને શ્રીમદભગવતગીતાનો પાઠ, હવન યજ્ઞ વગેરે કાર્ય વધારે હોય છે. ગાયત્રી મંત્રના પુરશ્ચરણ અને બધા વ્રત શ્રાવણ માસમાં પૂરા કરાય છે. શ્રાવણના મહીનામાં મંદીરમાં કીર્તન, ભજન, જાગરણ વગેરે કાર્યક્રમ વધારે હોય છે.

શું કરવાથી શું ફળ મળે છે

સ્કંદપુરાણ મુજબ સંસારમાં માણસ જન્મ અને વિષ્ણુ ભક્તિ બન્ને જ દુર્લભ છે પણ ચાતુર્માસમાં ભગવાન વિષ્ણુનો વ્રત કરતા માણસ જ ઉત્તમ અને શ્રેષ્ઠ ગણાય છે. ચોમાસાના આ ચાર માસમાં બધા તીર્થ, દાન પુણ્ય અને દેવ સ્થાન ભગવાન વિષ્ણુજીની શરણ લઈને સ્થિત હોય છે. અને ચાતુર્માસમાં ભગવાન વિષ્ણુને નિયમથી પ્રણામ કરનારનો જીવન શુભફળદાયક બની જાય છે.
