अंग्रेजी के वर्चस्व को आज हिन्दी भाषा के लिए सबसे बड़ा खतरा माना जाता है वहीं अंग्रेजी दो-ढाई सौ साल पहले यूरोप में काफी उपेक्षित भाषा थी। आज जो हाल हिन्दी का है वह कभी अंग्रेजी का था। इसका कारण था अभिजात्य भाषा फ्रेंच और जर्मन का वर्चस्व। विज्ञान, अर्थशास्त्र, समाजविज्ञान, मानविकी, दर्शनशास्त्र आदि विषयों पर फ्रेंच और जर्मन में अधिक काम होता था।
ज्ञान का भंडार अंग्रेजी के बजाय उक्त भाषा में उपलब्ध था और वैज्ञानिक, शोधकर्ता अंग्रेजी भाषा में मौलिक काम बहुत कम किया था करते थे। फ्रेंच और जर्मन में सृजित ज्ञान का अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद होता था। बिजली के सिद्धांत प्रतिपादित करने वाले प्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक माइकल फराडे ने अंग्रेजी भाषा के लिए बड़ी पैरवी की। उन्होंने 1857 में अपने वैज्ञानिक मित्रों से कहा कि अगर हम अंग्रेजी भाषा में ज्ञान का सृजन नहीं करेंगे तो यह भाषा हमेशा पिछड़ी रहेगी। हम यह तय करें कि हम अपने शोध-सिद्धांत अंग्रेजी में लिखें, उसके बाद दूसरी भाषाओं में अनुवाद हो। जैसे ही अंग्रेजी में मौलिक सृजन प्रारंभ हुआ इस भाषा की दशा और दिशा बदल गई। आज यह विश्व की महाशक्ति अमेरिका, यूरोप, एशिया के कई देशों समेत आधे विश्व पर राज कर रही है।

सबक
हिन्दी को प्रतिष्ठित करना है तो विज्ञान, गणित अर्थशास्त्र, दर्शनशास्त्र, समाज विज्ञान, कानून के क्षेत्र में नए ज्ञान का सृजन, मौलिक कार्य और अनुवाद हिन्दी में करना होगा। अन्य भारतीय भाषाओं के शोध सीधे हिन्दी में और हिन्दी के कार्य सीधे अन्य भाषाओं में अनुदित होना चाहिए। अंग्रेजी की मध्यस्थता खत्म कर ही हम उस पर निर्भरता खत्म कर सकते हैं।
