नई दिल्ली। रक्षामंत्री निर्मला सीतारमण ने सोमवार को कहा कि राष्ट्रीय युद्ध स्मारक का उद्घाटन एक महत्वपूर्ण घटना है तथा देश के पास अब एक और तीर्थस्थल है, जहां लोग आकर अपने वीर सैनिकों को श्रद्धांजलि दे सकते हैं।

नेशनल स्टेडियम में पूर्व सैनिकों को संबोधित करते हुए उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि स्वतंत्रता के बाद प्राणों का बलिदान करने वाले सैनिकों को श्रद्धांजलि देने के लिए हमारा स्वयं का युद्ध स्मारक होने की अत्यधिक आवश्यकता थी।

प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी ने राष्ट्र को सोमवार को 'राष्ट्रीय समर स्मारक' समर्पित किया, जो यहां इंडिया गेट परिसर में 40 एकड़ से अधिक क्षेत्र में फैला है।

मोदी ने इस अवसर पर पूर्व सैनिकों को संबोधित भी किया। सीतारमण ने कहा कि इसे ऐसे अद्भुत तरीके से डिजाइन किया गया है कि ऐसा लगता है कि यह काफी पहले से था। हम गर्व के साथ कह सकते हैं कि भारतीयों के लिए अब एक और तीर्थस्थल है। हम उम्मीद करते हैं कि प्रत्येक नागरिक हमारे वीर सैनिकों को इस स्मारक पर श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करेगा।

स्मारक उन सैनिकों को श्रद्धांजिल अर्पित करता है जिन्होंने 1962 में भारत-चीन युद्ध, 1947 में भारत-पाक युद्ध, 1965 और 1971 के भारत-पाक युद्धों, श्रीलंका में शांति अभियान और संयुक्त राष्ट्र शांति अभियानों के दौरान तथा 1999 में कारगिल संघर्ष के दौरान अपने प्राण न्योछावर किए थे।

रक्षामंत्री ने कहा कि प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध और अफगानिस्तान-वजीरिस्तान संघर्ष के बाद स्वतंत्रता से पहले के युग में इंडिया गेट के रूप में एक स्मारक का निर्माण किया गया। 1972 में इसके नीचे 1971 के भारत-पाक युद्ध की स्मृति में अमर जवान ज्योति रखी गई।

स्वतंत्रता के बाद हमारे राष्ट्रीय हित में, देश की संप्रभुता और अखंडता की रक्षा करते हुए 25 हजार से अधिक सैनिकों ने अपना बलिदान दिया है। वर्ष 2014 में संसद के संयुक्त सत्र के दौरान राष्ट्रपति ने सैनिकों की वीरता के सम्मान में राष्ट्रीय युद्ध स्मारक बनाने की प्रतिबद्धता जताई थी। सीतारमण ने कहा कि आज प्रधानमंत्री मोदी के नेतृत्व में हमारी सरकार ने उस प्रतिबद्धता को पूरा कर दिया है।
