फसल को कीड़ों से बचाएगा 'सेक्सी पौधा'

ज़रा सोचिए कि कोई पौधा हानिकारक कीड़ों में यौन आकर्षण पैदा कर उन्हें अपनी तरफ खींचे और फिर उन्हें मार डाले। सुनने में भले ही यह बड़ी अजीब सी बात लगे लेकिन स्पेन के वैज्ञानिकों ने यह साबित कर दिया है कि वे पौधों में अनुवांशिक बदलाव कर उससे फेरोमोन्स नामक रसायन पैदा कर सकते हैं। फेरोमोन्स वहीं रसायन पदार्थ है जिसे मादा कीड़े नर कीड़ो को आकर्षित करने के लिए निकालती हैं।

इस नए अविष्कार का मकसद उन पौधो को कीड़ों से बचाना है जिनकी बाज़ार में बहुत अधिक कीमत होती है। इस तकनीक के ज़रिए 'सेक्सी पौधों' को विकसित किया जाएगा। हालांकि पौधों को बचाने के लिए फेरोमोन्स का इस्तेमाल पहले से हो रहा है, लेकिन इसे बहुत अधिक लागत पर प्रयोगशाला में तैयार किया जाता है।

ससफायर प्रोजेक्ट

अब एक प्रोजेक्ट के तहत पौधों को इस तरीके से विकसित किया जाएगा कि वे फेरोमोन्स बनाने में सक्षम हो सकें। इस प्रोजेक्ट का नाम 'ससफायर' रखा गया है। इस योजना के एक सदस्य और वेलेंसिया में पॉलीटेक्निक यूनिवर्सिटी में शोधार्थी विसेंट नवारो ने बीबीसी से कहा, ''सोचिए कि कोई पौधा इस काबिल हो जाए कि वह कीड़ों को अपनी तरफ आकर्षित करे और जब कीड़ा उन पर बैठे तो वह मर जाए, फ़सल को बचाने के लिए यह बेहद कारगर तरीका हो सकता है।''

जब अधिक मात्रा में फेरोमोन्स पैदा होता है तो इससे नर कीड़े परेशान हो जाते हैं और वो मादा कीड़ों को खोज नहीं पाते, यही वजह है कि इन कीड़ों के प्रजनन में भी कमी आती है। नवारो बताते हैं कि यह तकनीक तो पहले से इस्तेमाल की जा रही है लेकिन इसमें बहुत अधिक खर्च आता है।

वो बताते हैं, ''इसकी कीमत कई बार 23 हज़ार डॉलर से 35 हज़ार डॉलर और कभी-कभी तो 117 हज़ार डॉलर प्रतिकिलो तक पहुंच जाती है। इसका मतलब यह है कि फसल को कीड़ों से बचाने के लिए यह लागत बहुत ज़्यादा है।''

फसल से दूर ले जाकर मारेगा कीड़ों को

ससफायर प्रोजेक्ट में स्पेन, जर्मनी, स्लोवेनिया और ब्रिटेन के वैज्ञानिक साथ काम कर रहे हैं। जब कीड़े पौधों की तरफ आकर्षित होते हैं और उन पर बैठते हैं तो कीटनाशकों के ज़रिए उन पर नियंत्रण किया जाता है। ससफायर प्रोजेक्ट के ज़रिए कीड़ों को फ़सल से दूर ले जाया जाएगा और फिर उन्हें बाहर ही खत्म भी कर दिया जाएगा।

इस तरह किसी फसल में कीटनाशक का इस्तेमाल नहीं किया जाएगा, इसकी जगह जिस जगह फसल लगाई गई है उसके बाहर ऐसे पौधे लगाए जाएंगे जो कीड़ों को अपनी तरफ आकर्षित करें और उन पर बैठकर मर जाएं।

इस बारे में नवारो बताते हैं, ''हमने 'निकोटिआना बेंथामिआना' प्रकार के पौधे के ज़रिए फेरोमोन्स बनाने में सफलता पायी है। अब हमारे सामने सवाल है कि हम इसे कुछ और सामान्य प्रकार के पौधों में बनाने में सफलता हासिल कर पाते हैं या नहीं।'' 

फ़िलहाल ससफायर प्रोजेक्ट की समयसीमा तीन साल तय की गई है। उसके बाद इस बात का आंकलन किया जाएगा कि अलग-अलग कंपनियां इस प्रोजेक्ट में कितनी दिलचस्पी दिखाती हैं। नवारो के अनुसार बहुत सी कंपनियों ने इस प्रोजेक्ट में अपनी इच्छा जताई है लेकिन फिलहाल इसे पूरा होने में पांच साल तो लग ही जाएंगे। वे मानते हैं कि यह 'सेक्सी पौधे' कीटनाशकों की दुनिया में एक बड़ा बदलाव लेकर आएंगे।
